I'm not sure really of the point of keeping a movie's director and location, but bothering with excuses to put a lot of Americans onscreen in a nearly shot for shot remake of the original. The film spends more time trying to account for why the nearly all gaijin cast is in Japan rather than focusing on the atmosphere and scares that the original provided in such abundance. With the Americans in the lead roles, it manages to distract from the story and ambiance which drives 90% of this film.

Do yourself a favour, try and track down the original Japanese version DVD and watch it instead, it works a lot better and isn't distracted by having Sarah Michelle Gellar (who will probably never be able to shake her Buffy image much less provide a decent performance outside of the show) trying to make scared faces or feeblely explain why there are so many white people hanging around Japan.

I just wish the original had some of the slick look and special effects that this one did. Other than that, this is a pretty redundant and silly exercise.

her performance in 'The Harvard Man' was about the best she's capable of. i personally dont care to see this movie for two reasons:

 1. its PG-13
 2. sarah michelle gellar is in it

two top reasons to pass on a film imo, but i didnt know it was a remake. does the original have the same title or would i have to look for it in japanese language?

The original is actually titled Ju-On: The Grudge, and it even had a Japanese TV series and a pretty decent sequel. The best thing that made the original so unnerving was the fact that there was little (if any) explanation for why the curse came about in the first place. The film bothers to add in a lame subplot with Bill Pullman (the president from Independence Day - another reason to avoid it) explaining why everything happened.

The first scene had the audience laughing so hysterically hard (and I'm guessing not intentionally so), not a great way to start off a "serious" horror film.

Re: The Grudge

First of all I don't understand why Sam Raimi got involved in this project in the first place... And second of all... why oh why did the jap director agreed to do this... it's as stupid as Gus Van Sant's version of Psycho... oh wait! $$$

Movie Grudge

Who has seen this movie...if you didn't go see it, it will scare the shit out of you. I saw it last night, and for me its the scariest movie since Exorcist.

:Bingo: :Bingo:

Stupid movie.

So many horror cliches it was funny, and the way the story line went was stupid and hard to follow.

My girlfriend and I were asking each other questions about the plot the whole time.

Although she and I jumped a couple of times, I was sorely dissapointed with this film and would not recommend it to anyone.

Glad i did not waste my money on this movie then

#291522Post 8 of 30

Thought it was a pile of cack-these films just piss me off, they are not realistic in any way.If I heard some kid moaning in an attic the way this kid does,i would be staright outta there, not climbing up to have a look like some dumbass yank always does in these films

For those who have seen The Grudge, what do you think about the news of a sequel? I think, why not. I would watch it. The Grudge had some good scares. And who knows, well except for those who have seen the jap. version, it may have a better story.

#292109Post 10 of 30

well since i get in free....why not...one or two good jumps is worth it...plus i'm a loser so......

When I first seen the previews of this movie, I thought to myself Ring 2. Later I found out, the creator of Ju-On also created Ringu. It's all coming together. But I think The Grudge will be pretty cool, it's not really meant to keep you wrapped up in some overly drawn out story line, but rather scare the crap out of you.

sarah michelle gellar

I've seen the Japanese sequel and it starts to bring things together as well as paints some pretty plausible reasons why things would continue, rather than have some other stupid family move into the house.

Hopefully they'll do a better job than they did with the first.

Re: The Grudge

well I share a different opinion for this movie, probably because I have not watched or even knew of the Japanese version. I saw this movie last night with absolutely no idea of what to expect and there were a few reasons I thought the movie was good and some of the reasons I didnt think it was worth it..... but the good (IMO) overshadowed the reason why you should'nt see it.......

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE, PLEASE DONT READ THIS ANY FURTHER.....

The Bad

 I must agree to what most say in here..... They could have done a much a better job with the casting Sarah and Bill were defo not my best choices either..... in fact that no named actor who played the part of the son who bought the house would have been a much better option...

 Why wasn't the mother being affected in the beginning phases and why did she die when she did.....

 and if Yoko the care-taker was a regular..... why did it affect her after so long when other were falling victims much quicker

 why did the ghost choose to tango with Sarah at the time of the house burning when she had just fininshed merely looking at her boyfriend and finishing him off....

 they showed no real build-up to the falling in love aspect... that was just balls imo.... a twisted journal was the only thing linking the two.... and wtf did he (bill) jump out of the balcony for ?? that was just weird... yea you saw a few dead people in a house but that wasnt good enough.....

The Good

 Firstly, the idea that when death occurs in sorrow / rage.... it leaves behind a remnant of itself was absolutely fantastic.... death occurs in a variety of situations but I hadn't imagined one as described in the movie.....

 They used a few extremely original ways of showing terror.... especially when the sister dies.... when the lights are going off in the stairs above and the apparition is making its way up from the bottom..... that I thought that was really cool...

 how they fused a cat into the sequencing was VERY original..... esp in the beginning of the movie when the cries of the cat and the little child were mixed in and it was hard to tell which was what....

 how the boy friend dies was very original..... no blood, no gore, just a ghost coming looking him dead in the eye and pulling the life out of him was very very good.....

 The detective (Nagakawa I think) played his role very well.... intensely would be the word but not quite..... esp when he knew something very wrong was going on with anything related to the case.....

 movie started off very well bringing so much obscurity and un-connected events into the same plot.... which I thought was neat.....

I could go on for a bit but I defo recommend seeing it with an open mind.... it definitely was better than "The Village" so yea... give it a go.... I"m gonna go check out "Saw" meanwhile....

The Grudge

Has anyone seen this movie? I thought it was pretty aweful, I was expecting so much after seeing the previews... oh well! Does anyone know if its a remake of a Japanese movie?

#353484Post 19 of 30

I saw it. I never watch these kinds of movies so dont have much to compare to. Thought it was okay but not bad. but it is a remake of an older japanese film

#353610Post 20 of 30

Re: The Grudge

just finished watching this. the ending made no sense... it just seemed to be a blatant way to set force for a sequel. also agree that the casting didn't make much sense. the characters could've been much creepier. otherwise, I liked it--it had my interest for most of the movie. i'd give it 4 pickles

Re: The Grudge

never saw the first one, but my little sis drug me to the second one for her birthday. i fell asleep during the last 40 min "climax". these scary movies featuring asian girls popping out of tv's / wells / closets friggin suck.

Re: The Grudge

if one wants a good horror flick rent Alien. End of story.

#755705Post 29 of 30

Re: The Grudge

fairly dissapointed with Grudge 2 (asian version), not a patch on the first movie, didnt really expand on the idea much and offered nothing new, but did explain a few things that didnt make sense from the first film.

And yes, Alien is great ;)

Re: The Grudge

^^ Agreed, I saw Ju-On Part 2 couple of weekends ago and what a fucking bore that flick was.... Part 1 on the other hand is a piss-in-your-pants moment right through
