'The Motorcycle Diaries'

Greetings all. The other night I was fortunate enough to check out 'The Motorcycle Diaries' (Diarios de Motocicleta) at a local independent movie theatre. The film stars Gael Garc?a Bernal ('Y Tu Mama Tambien') as Ernesto Guevara de la Serna and is strictly based on the diary he maintained during his South American journey with his best friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna). This film is wonderfully acted and fantastically directed and even though such an adventure could bore some to tears it peaked my interest several times with scenes of humor and intellectual foreshadowing.

Ernesto, for those that aren't aware, would go on to become known as 'Che' and assist Fidel Castro in the Cuban Revolution. This movie stops far short of the period in Che's life where his attitude becomes one of necessary violence but does, at times, feature his growing animosity toward capitalism. Che's commitment and unselfish attitude during these years is something to be commended and replicated by current generations.

I would strongly recommend anyone that knows the real story of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara to go see this film. As for any of the 'modern day revolutionaries' that walk around with Che's infamous face screenprinted on a t-shirt and trash talk capitalism as they sip on their Caramel Macchiato, I would skip this one as it may be too intellectually stimulating for you. And for anyone that knows nothing of Che, you may come out of the theatre asking why this film had been made; but if you pick up a biography before you go to the theatre, the movie will make complete sense to you.

Re: 'The Motorcycle Diaries'

I saw this a couple of months ago having read the book ages ago... it's worth seeing just for the stunning vistas of South America. Somewhere I need to get to.

It's brilliantly acted and Gael Garcia Bernal has got future Hollywood star written all over him. :Bingo:

I still want to see this but no theaters around here have it. Hopefully soon but Toledo sucks, so I am not keeping my hopes up.

This is definately a must see. Everything about this movie is great. If you are not fan of Che it's still worth a try. I would not mind spending 3 hours watching just the roads and view of mountains.

Yes, this movie is amazng. I loved it! I loved the way he portrayed his passion for the unfortunate people and all the stuff they went through.

I recommend this to anyone who's heard of Che'

Movie of the year for me. Absolute beauty. It takes the best of the diaries, gets the basic story and then goes on to become a documentary of Che's adventures as well as of the places they themselves visited. It's raw. It's...as objective as Hollywood can be. Masterful.

'Che' is a nickname given to Argentinians through Latin America, btw.

Re: 'The Motorcycle Diaries'

Just finished watching this. Good movie, great acting, amazing scenery. Expected something similar to City of God so I was a little let down, but still good. It just seems like they should've started the story at the point the movie ended, where he departed to go revolutionize... instead, we got to see him get motivated

Re: 'The Motorcycle Diaries'

its definitely a good piece of work, great acting and a good story to follow very carefully.. it could sound a bit boring when we're introduced to this movie.. a diary from some guy relating his and his friend adventures through south american countries but its indeed a great diary about Che Guevara and his trip through some countries to spread the word of peace, friendship and union even between rival countries for long decades. Im very curious about Che and his political life.. this movie didnt show me much about it but it sure did about his personality and his adventures across some countries.

surely a great movie.
