Re: Watchmen
Can't wait for this. Amazed at the way the characters have been brought to life, especially Comedian and Night Owl. Didn't really recognize Ozymandias though, he was blond and his armor was golden I think. :what

Re: Watchmen
forgot all about this. it looks more high budget than i thought it would, but i don't know if this is a good thing for this kind of story.
to be honest, i just don't think any mocie could do it its proper justice. got my fingers crossed though.

trailer is out

Re: Watchmen
It looks a bit more flashy and big-budget than I expected ... I was thinking something more like Dark City. Really hope the slo-mo is only in the trailer, that's some gratuitious use of it ... trailer looks like a John Woo movie in tights.
Re: Watchmen
Did anyone notice Billy Corgans awesome track during the preview?
Re: Watchmen
Oh yeah I wanted to ask about it but forgot. That was a nice tune to go with the trailer.

Shit... that's the main thing I noticed!
Re: Watchmen
Is it Smashing Pumpkins or just Billy Corgan solo?
Re: Watchmen
its smashing pumpkins from their last album ... track is called doomsday clock
Re: Watchmen
Hmmmm... doesn't really sound like doomsday clock?
Re: Watchmen
You get a nice preview of it if you see The Dark Knight.

Re: Watchmen
^^Thanks. Sounds a little different without the guitar.
Re: Watchmen
Its nearly out! Finally! Have recently re-read the graphic novel in anticipation for this movie. The trailers look wicked. Hopefully its a good adaption, and i read in Film magazine they are planning the full extended edition for DVD. Good times.

Re: Watchmen
Rated 18 in the UK. Now we are talking!
Re: Watchmen
The ending has been changed slightly from the comic book. Don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, as just about any conversion from page to screen requires some tweaking.

Re: Watchmen
I'm going to see it tonight! I'm so excited :) :)
I read this interesting article about how they were able to turn the comics into a feature film and all the struggles they encountered along the way...
if you're interested here's the link to it

Re: Watchmen
I started this thread a while back, being excited about seeing it
but i'll be honest here folks
i've read enough "I'm letdown" "disappointed" "too long, confusing" "didn't like the alt ending" "the book was better" comments on other forums to .... dare i think it..... maybe wait till it hits video....
Re: Watchmen
Yeah I am not hopeful to be honest.
Re: Watchmen
I just got back from seeing it last night. I mean i thought the movie was visually stunning and the story was original anyway. The only thing that was tough going was how long it was, like ya know how some long movies don't feel that long? For me you could feel 162 minutes tick by slowly...What was the ending change in the comic book? (spoiler)
In saying that though i still say go see it...
Re: Watchmen
Just home from this, loved it.
Thought the movie's ending made more sense then the book's.
Some great actor-work, the guy playing Rorschach nailed it.
Re: Watchmen
I saw it, I wasn't really impressed by it. Maybe it is because I haven't read the book. The length could have been chopped down a bit too. Great visuals though.
Re: Watchmen
i thought it was awesome .. it was as close to the comic series as possible with whatever that was filmed almost identical panel to panel to whatever that was in the comic
and yah the guy that acted as Rorschach absolutely nailed it ... he was how i had envisioned him to be even his voice to what it was in the comic
Re: Watchmen
regardless of criticism, i'm excited to go see this tonight.
Re: Watchmen
I really dug it as an adaptation from book to screen - Snyder needs to be commended for being able to adapt the story to the screen which other directors like Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass and others had attempted before him, and walked away from it. I can't help but think their adaptations would have been complete disasters compared to this.
Because of the loyal following the graphic novel has, there are going to be many purists that are going to see the omissions and changes that are made to be heresy. But I see Snyder making some very good decisions in making the book a very watchable film with his translation, while remaining very faithful to the source material. Anytime you take one media and translate it to another, sacrifices are going to have to be made since each media is going to be consumed differently and have their audiences processing it in a different manner.
The altered ending was probably one of the wisest choices, as while the original ending to the graphic novel might have made sense back in 1986, it would have been a pretty jarring event that could have broken up the feel that the film had going through it - more emphasis that pretty much all the superheroes with the exception of Dr. Manhattan are ordinary people that are just really good at what they do and function as vigilantes more than the typical superhero stereotype of saviors with actual powers beyond.
I think the only way to really please the loyalists would maybe to have this in a 12 part HBO or Showtime mini series that translates panel to screen, but even then, what would be the point of that? The polish that you see up on the screen with this would be sorely diminished, and even some of the content that is touched upon in the graphic novel, a major TV station might have to tone down just for broadcasting standards. When adapting something like this into another media format, sacrifices are going to be made, and sometimes the translation is going to get lost at certain points.
High marks for the casting of Jackie Earl Haley as Rorschach - he pretty much carries the movie in the sense of its gravitas and the drama and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role that could have done the role with this much competency (imagine one casting idea of David Caruso in the role - holy shit).
Is it the best comic book movie ever? Nah, I doubt it. But it's a very respectable effort and it definitely leans more favorably towards fans of the graphic novel than trying to de-evolve itself into something that the general public might digest as a typical weekend movie outing.

welcome back highsteppa!
Re: Watchmen
^ Highsteppa, I too really enjoy your posts and appreciate your knowledge on these films. Very interesting and thought provoking.
Re: Watchmen
going to see this tonight!
Re: Watchmen
Lets face it, it sounds like this adaption could have been A LOT worse. Im going to see it on thursday, and am still excited. There is always positive and negative commentary on any film, so ill make up my own mind.
Re: Watchmen
I thought this movie was great. I liked how they stayed very close to the book adaptiation, and I loved the use of the 60's/70's soundtrack. I also appreciated that during all of the fight scenes they didn't do a standard Jason Bourne thing and cut around the damn fightscene every .5 seconds so you can't focus on anything going on. Also I loved the Nixson war room scenes, nice homage to Dr Strangelove. Zack Snyder has a great eye for movies like this, loved his directing, very well done. Also Rorschach was great...
Re: Watchmen
Had no idea about the comic and didn't really enjoy the movie - good visual and some fun things but just way to long Too much effort on character development that didn't work for me Plus, I thought the whole message behind it was just stupid in the sens that it didn't take a phd to make the same reasoning as "one of the most intelligent person on earth" would of loved more action
Re: Watchmen
I've just d/l'd the 1-12 comics (was thinking of buying the Absolute Watchmen hardback box-set ... but the price is rather too high).
So ... big question ... should I get through the 12 x series 1st or do it after the film ?
Re: Watchmen
Would go with the movie first then the comic if you're new to it. The comic is very very exhaustive. The movie will feel like a primer while the comic will open up a whole new world to it.
Re: Watchmen
I say go through the series first. There's a fair bit of dot connecting and stuff that's implied in the movie that pans out a fair bit more in the graphic novel.
Re: Watchmen
you can just get it off of amazon here in one book for 12$ and its about 400 pages.
