One of the best shows on cable.

:Bingo:

Re: Breaking Bad

So many people have recommended this show to me, so the wife and I gave it a shot. We gave it four episodes and neither of us felt compelled to watch more. Did we miss something? I get this sense that some of these shows that are a little "older" may not be as crisp and sharp as other shows out there now, like Mad Men. We found the same thing with the Sopranos. While it may have been amazing when it first came out, maybe we've been spoiled by the shows that came after it?

Re: Breaking Bad

T.V shows are very individualistic imo. It's a pretty interesting point you bring up, I think they cater for your socialistic needs rather than say like the movies where it caters for emotions, senses, acting and cinematic effects etc. etc,. But I guess some shows do that too..like Breaking Bad

A good example of this would be with me and my girlfriend, I like the show Californication because it depicts a early 40's man who hangs around L.A smoking and sleeping with the hottest girls in town. See now that's every man's dream...girlfriend cannot stand it, as it most probably appeals to the modern machonesique man with an eagerness for babes and weed. I've even said when I hit 40 I want to do the same things the character from the show does.

With T.V your pretty much capturing your show for intended audiences = revenue from advertising. There are so many shows out there but not all can and never will appeal to the masses. But I guess T.V lhas always lacked creativity; same problems, different show. Which, is why Breaking Bad was one of the best I've seen, nothing like this was done before.

Re: Breaking Bad

^ Very much agree with you - I loved the show, my girlfriend not at all - fell asleep on the 3rd show, mate at work has loved it. For me it was the drama created by dramatic acting and not by background music creating the hype. Another show that cut to the bone for me was "the wire". Hardcore acting with a great storyline that threaded through 5 seasons

#1565485Post 169 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

^the wire is the best tv show I've ever seen. breaking bad a close 2nd i think.

Re: Breaking Bad

threehills, did you like Mad Men? IMO Mad Men and Breaking Bad are very slow films and you gotta be in it for the long haul. With Mad Men, I didn't think the series peaked till S3 or 4 when Draper's life fell apart and he sat on his bed crying.

But I gotta say, aside from the story in Breaking Bad, sound, and cinematography are some pretty good shit for a TV show.

Yeahp! The cinematographer deserves an Oscar.

Re: Breaking Bad

^For sure. Love the lighting and camera work. Looks more like a well shot movie than a cable tv show.

I am going to give this a try :) It sounds like something I would enjoy, but then again.. you never know until you watch it.

Go for it man. Great show, and a superb overall series. Make sure you start at Ep.1 Series 1!

#1568972Post 175 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

^that is what I did.. it is indeed a great show! :) How are they going to stretch this for another 3 seasons ? I hope the quality stays the same.. usually most shows kind of go down after the 1st season

#1568973Post 176 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

gets better. seasons 3 and 4 have been the best sofar imo.

#1568976Post 177 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

^ well that is great..good to know! I love it so far.. it has a lot of good moments. I am on ep.3 season 1.. that bathtub scene is gold, and the clean up part with the flashback.. brilliant :)

Re: Breaking Bad

Just finished season 4. Besides couple of "holes" in the plot, its a solid show, actually its amazing.. :) My main issue is that the connection/friendship between Walt and Jessie is presented as too weak for it to sustain the pressure they had to go trough. Otherwise the character development was top notch.. writing is good.. again for a TV show, this is very well done.

Thanks for the recommendation!

#1575588Post 184 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

I kinda think of Walt and Jessie as a very complex father-and-son/business-partners relationship that might be weak on the surface and in the situations they're thrown into, but also surprisingly strong, which makes the show.

#1575728Post 185 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

It's an interesting relationship. Walt couldn't have succeed without Pinkman and vice-versa on Walt's winning formula. It's pretty clever when you think about it. They only show them together mainly when they're cooking. I think it's good on the way that they show this, as it leaves you in greater anticipation; having Walt's wife find out about Walt sneaking off to cook, in the earlier seasons always leaves you on the edge of your seats.

That is a big part of it.. once they showed that Pinkman can do it without Walt, i started to question the extend to their friendship. I kept thinking about the fact that Pinkman was Walt's student once..and the history is keeping them together. Also, Walt's intervation after the kid got killed, that showed Pinkman that Walt actually cares, but then again.. its Walt, one can never be clear on what exactly is his end goal when he does something :)

Surprisingly strong is exactly it, it never "Feels" like it, but it actually is, and the reason is not really clear, at least for me. Either way.. this is a really good show. I've recommended it to several friends already..

Re: Breaking Bad

Just finished season 4, I thought it ended quite well, don't see the point in series 5 TBH. Strange how it was not that big in the UK, it was more of underground hit. The people that watched it in the UK watched it on the Internet.

#1582527Post 188 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

Yeah I hope they end the series properly now that they're continuing with S5.

#1582578Post 189 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

^tend to agree with both you guys I could have ended it last season and left it on a high note

Re: Breaking Bad

I hope they have the whole setup gets even crazier this season and maybe the shit hits the fan and they kill one or both of them off...

#1582684Post 191 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

When you think about it there's no other way to end it. Either gets killed/caught.

#1582689Post 192 of 361

Re: Breaking Bad

Yup. With the writing the past 4 seasons pretty much being the 2nd best show I've ever seen on TV (only to The Wire), I bet (hope) Vince Gilligan will do something like this and not have it do some bullshit happy ending. If they kill off characters or have something crazy happen that would be a great end to the run.

Re: Breaking Bad

No way possible for it to have a Desperate Housewives like ending.

Here's an UK equivalent you guys might like:
