Re: Babel
maybe you just arent a fan of large ensemble movies like babel? i'd recommend you check out stuff by pt anderson or robert altman to change your mind,
Re: Babel
I have 13+ films/series by Altman so wonder what you mean by 'ensemble movies' because 'Short Cuts' and the very similar 'Magnolia' were both great stories.
As for Altman...

Re: Babel
p.s. I am a fan of big ensemble movies as you call them Babel is assembled from three shit and boring stories...I understand that he was trying to communicate the idea of loneliness to the audience. I respect that but the film itself is a big pile of wank!
Re: Babel
I just watched th is last night. great cinematography and kept me very interested until the end. Once the end came all I could think to myself was "that's it?" I loved the way the movie was filmed, and all three stories were very interesting, but the way the connected and the way the movie ended was weak imo. I'll give it 3 pickles

I agree with all your statements there. IMO, it was just an ok storyline and as you said a real weak ending. The concept is great though.
Re: Babel
I thought it was good. Impacted my wife a lot more, I was sleeping through most of it. Not as good as they say, but a good movie.
Re: Babel
Just seen it - liked it a lot
Cinematograpghy was great , intertwining stories were glued tothegeter with real characters that you cared about. The weak point was defo Brad/Cate - it would have been far better if they were less known actors (but clearly good for money issues and film career), the Japanese plot was loosley connected to the film (he just gave someone something) it was perhaps the best in terms of drama and relevance to the themes of coping and survival. So what did she write in the note to the policeman?
well worth seeing. 21 Grams is still my fav tho.
Re: Babel
I thought she wrote she was going to kill herself, but her dad caught her first. that's what i interpreted.
Re: Babel
if that was the case then the policeman didnt react very much when he read it!!
Re: Babel
yeah, i figure he assumed she jumped right after he left. I don't know. what'd you think it said?
Re: Babel
bored me to death.
Re: Babel
yer right, it aint no Independance Day :Who:
Re: Babel
yeah, i figure he assumed she jumped right after he left. I don't know. what'd you think it said?
I thought it was more confesional - stating why she had made up a story about her mother, and this was her telling the truth. Fits better witht the pain, coping, survival, recovery theme.
But also the whole pont of us not knowing is so that the viewer can interpret it any way he/she pleases. right?
{Until i saw the look on his face I thought it probably said I want to F your brains out- but thats clearly part of my pathology :) }
Re: Babel
Just got the film the other day. I thought it was drawn out and too slow for my tastes. The beginning especially bored me to death. It was directed well, just not my cup of tea.
Re: Babel
remember the jap girl took off the cops coat before he left. while he was reading the note i thought she took his gun (dunno i just thought maybe it'd be in his jacket) and was going to shoot herself, as the father had explained about the mother to the cop only moments prior. then when she was still standing there nude with the father i was like Huh! i felt the movie was good overall, but fell short at the end like so many others these days. i was really intrigued by each character and how they would end up being connected, but jeez that fell way short also. i felt 'Crash' delivered much better in that regard.
i'll agree on 3 pickles
Re: Babel
saw this on yahoo's homepage today

i am betting its the club scene. i had to look away a couple times. also, the scene where the girl is on the swing might get some people.

Re: Babel

Re: Babel
Got the DVD yesterday and it was really good: awesome cinematography and quality soundtrack. Absolutely loved it. Deaf/mute Japanese chicks rock btw ;) :p
Re: Babel
yeah she does
Re: Babel
esp ones who like to take their clothes off as much as she does
Re: Babel
Holy shit, did this movie take me for a ride. I felt like I was on a roller coaster the whole time. Its been awhile since a movie grabbed me like that and pulled me along. Aside from its "far fetched" story, I thought the plot and developements were great. I was having a hard time understanding what the Japanese had to do with anything, then it all came together. I must say, the club scene was done very well. I liked it better than most club scenes of any movie. I thought the tracks were good, with lots of atmoshpericals that lended themselves very nicely to the deaf girl and the way she experienced the world. When they took the pills, it damn near got me buzzin. I thought it was failry spot on and enjoyed the movie.
Re: Babel
Saw this one last night. I thought it was a really well made movie in which, the 4 independent lives and their independent troubles were laid out extremely well. I especially loved the entire part of the movie filmed in Morocco. The Japanese girl's loneliness and her feeling "left out" because of her handicap and the things she did to "fit in" in a metropolitan city like Tokyo was just fantastically well depicted. Even the Mexican baby-sitter and the chance she took jumping borders for her son's wedding was entirely believable.
I'm with Adam in that I thought when the dad came into the balcony in the end, I thought he'd have seen her balancing over the edge contemplating jumping off. Also, I may have missed the part where the contents of the note to the Inspector came to light but I felt not having shown them left unecessary mystery to that part of the tale.
The connection of stories of what's going on with Brad Pitt and his kids was entirely believable. It could totally happen to anyone.
But I thought the connection between the previously owned Japanese gun and kids shooting it were weak. There could definitely have been a better storyline in plotting a more devious connection there.
Defo had the "that's it" moment when the flick ended. I'd still give it a healthy 7/10 for all the good that IS there in the movie rather than the smaller amount of disappointments it left behind.
Re: Babel
I thought that shooting scene was pretty hardout, nice acting from pitt but quite a depressing take.
Re: Babel
this was a shit film. i pretty much was asking, "what the fuck! why did they do THAT???" It really pissed me off. Very frustrating. I guess there were some interesting things going on, but it wasn't clever, even though it tried to be. I want my two hours back on this one. I liked brad pitt before I watched this movie, and now i just don't know if I could go see any of his flicks from here on out.
goddamnit that was a waste of a rental.
Re: Babel
Hmm I still havent seen this. Waiting for it to come up on my netflix cue. I always seem to push the more serious movies back in favor of comedys.. This usually happens until my supply of green is completely ran out.
