i have the first dvd release.. i need to get the special edition one eventually. like scarface and pulp fiction (original 1 disc bare bone releases)
... I would rather get "Finding Nemo" ... GF never struck me ... it is a good movie ... but something is just missing. I dunno. Nevermind. Have a nice day. Enjoy your flick.
i have the single disc release of goodfellas, but you have to flip it over in the middle. i never understood that. casino is 3 hours and all on one side. makes no sense to me. oh yeah, and Gangs Of New York is very poorly cut in half too.
i agree with that, what the hell was the point of that? the original release of seven on dvd (which i also have) is the same way... then they put out a 2disc special edition... and the movie is on one of the discs....wtf :?

Well it has to do how the dvd was copied... there are single layered disk and dual layered disk. For long movies on a single layered disk you have to flip the disk (known as the dreaded "flippers").
With dual layered disk, the copying is done so that you can have two times the information on just one side of the disk, you will notice this effect on playback as you get a slight pause in the movie as the dvd reader is switching to the other layer on the disk.
Even for recent releases you get the occasional flipper as with schlinder's list & gangs of new york, this is probably because the information that is stored on the disk (a la having 10 language tracks or better audio streams, etc..) is so much that it necessitate producing the dvd on two sides.
I haven't seen the Gangs of new york dvd, but I have heard about the problem at the cut. Didn't they cut it like midway in a scene? If so that is so retarded, you should at least find a spot to cut it off when a scene is finishing and start afresh on the other side with the following scene.
the cutoff is pretty bad.. im not sure where it is exactly i forget. i think its in the middle of the "love" scene
thats interesting.. i was always wondering why there were slight pauses on dvds, almost like a little skip. thanks for the info
isnt this the DVD that is coming out as a part of the Scorsece (spelling?!?!) collection of DVDs... i was watching Ebert & that other guy's show last night and they were talking about it and how it has a lot of scorcece talking from his point of view about a lot of different parts in the movie... if i recall i think they said it was a five movie DVD set with huge amounts of director talk on Goodfellas... sounds like a classic dvd to get a hold of... cheers :Cheerz:
Re:: Goodfellas
I hope that they were able to fit the movie on one disc withthe second being just extras. The original dvd - you had to flip over! Not sure if dvd's can handle 146 minutes but i think so.

Yep the Scorsese (those 3 s's always confuse people) collection includes the following: After Hours/Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore/Goodfellas/Mean Streets/Who's That Knocking At My Door? Glad to see Warner Brothers finally rolling this collection out (about time  )
Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe Mean Streets was De Niro & Scorsese's first collaboration... what a fruitful collaboration churning out a total of at least 6 films I can think off of the top of my head.
Goodfellas an all time classic, love that movie.
i havent seen it & intend on it, but always forget about it by the time i show up @ the block buster
One of the greats, for me the best gangster movie of them all. Been waiting for a decent DVD release of it for years.

but i liked casino more :Bingo:
Great Movie. One of my all-time favorite movies.
One of the best movies of all time:lol:
I don't know that I would say that this is the greatest gangster movie of all time but it is certainly one of the best. Goodfellas is beyond a shadow of a doubt a must watch and is staple in any gangster movie fans' dvd collection.
gotta love joe pesci in good fellas.
actually, joe pesci's line about veal while getting a bj may be better in casino:D

I would be really suprised if they split the movie on two disc... based on previous warner bros. 2 disc speciall collector's edition, movie on first disc, extras on second disc. One dvd can definitely handle 146 minutes because as I mention above about the dual layered disc!
