Probably the best film I saw this year, and that includes King Kong.

Munich is inspired by actual events regarding the action taken by Israel to avenge the assassination of their athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics by the Black September group. Make no mistake, this film does not take sides, as it manages to criticize both the Palestinians who had a hand in the massacre, as well as the Israeli government with the methods and means they took in extracting their revenge. The film manages to touch breifly on the whole Palestinian situation, in a very interesting set of circumstances.

This is by far one of Speilberg's most mature works, toeing the line that he set for himself with Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, and he manages to elicit some of the best performances of the year from Eric Bana, Daniel Craig (yes, as in the next James Bond), Geoffry Rush (whose final line is absolutely chilling), Mathieu Kassovitz, Ciaran Hinds and a list of others.

The story tells the Munich massacre in a series of flashbacks that continue throughout the film, showing the world watching, but also in the form of nightmares that plague Avner, the Mossad assembled hit squad leader, played fantastically by Eric Bana. The story shows the resolve by Golda Meir, who selects Avner herself, who works as an officer in the Mossad, and at one point, served as Meir's personal bodyguard. Right from the start the price of the duty assigned is a very high one - Avner needs to resign from his position immediately, leave his very pregnant wife who's due for birth in the very immediate future and operate above and beyond all his bosses, one of them memorably played by Geoffry Rush.

The team is quickly assembled, consisting of a South African gun handler (played by Daniel Craig), a toymaker who doubles as a bomb maker (played by Mathieu Kassovitz), an antique dealer/master forger and the Cleanup man (played by Ciaran Hinds), who verifies the targets and ensures that collateral damage is minimal.

Munich on the surface has the pacing of an action film, but with a very raw sense of how the action sequences unfold. The targets are unusual to say the least, and the team struggles with the lack of proof or any involvement with the whole Munich incident, hinting at the possiblity that the intelligence they have is deeply flawed and that their purpose is to serve a much darker goal.

The characters are human through and through. Action scenes and tasks carried out are often sloppy, messy and in some cases botched, while the group struggles with the guilt of what they are doing, the righteousness of their actions and more importantly, the Black September's response to each of the assassinations carried out. The cycle of violence that comes from this, suggests the hopelessness of extracting revenge from a sworn enemy, who is equally resolved in avenging the violence taken upon their people. Combine this with Avner's worries of the safety of his family and the realization that his own team is in far deeper danger than any of them could ever have imagined.

Munich is a very thought provoking film that examines the motives and consequences of revenge, with one of the most powerful final shots I've seen in some time. It's a very timely film that does allude, in my eyes, very subtly towards the current "war against terrorism" stance and attitude that dominates the western mentality concerning foreign policy.

Go see this.

Re: Munich

this movie sucks beyond words. total israeli propaganda trying to put a human face of Mossad agents, when they are in fact the most brutal intelligence agency in the world. You lot should educate yourselves and read up on the background of both Mossad and the palastinian issue. Of course i condemn killing innocent people, but i hate it when they try to make one side more humane than the other.

Because that's one of the major criticisms of the film was how the Israeli government operated when it came to their "mission" and how the hit team questioned the validity of the targets and the brutality in the way the revenge was taken upon them. It doesn't romanticize the actions taken, nor does it assign right or righteousness to anyone in the film. Also, if you had even seen the film, you'd know that they were operating outside of the Mossad, on an even higher authority issued by Golda Meir herself.

The film questions a lot of the legalities and the intentions of the counterstikes. Don't simply judge the film because of the fact it takes the perspective of the Israelis involved, because it doesn't paint any better a picture than the Black September group and the questionable guilt that was assigned to some of the Palastinian targets by the Israeli government.

I have seen it, and i think it takes a very simplistic view of a situation that has alot more to it. Characters in the film especially the palastinian side are as always stereotyped. You cannot dumb a film down to this level, especially with an event like this. i also don't like it when films try to take the neutral 'view', there is no such thing. It's already been tried earlier this year with kingdom of heaven, i'm not saying they are similar movies but they try to blame both sides and that 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Life isn't so simple, and if you want to describe an event in its true form, you've got to present it with the true facts that surround it even it goes against what most people believe or think to be 'right'.

How is the palestinian side stereotyped in this film?

seems like we saw different versions of munich.

This movie was not pro-israel at all. In my opinion, this movie condemed the actions taken by Israel. For me, the message of this movie was that an "eye for an eye" does not resolve anything, that it only escalates conflict.

great movie - fantastic.

Re: Munich

I thought this movie was brilliant. Definetly a tad long, but the fact is that it's a long story to tell. I'm also curious to know how the Palastinian side was stereotyped. I thought it portayed both sides as best as possible. No killing was especially romanticized and the conclusion at the end is violence doesn't end violence. Maybe I'm wrong?

I saw that movie. It is a great one.Speilberg was really mature like u said. One of the best scenes is that with both avnar and the palastini man when they were talking by the stairs in the safe house. It shows how much is every one commited to his pov.and both were really acting great.....generally it was one of the best movies i saw since a long time..i'd recommend it.also u can download it..it is there

Re: Munich

Am in the midst of watching this movie, have not finished it completely (2 hours into it) yet so please dont break the plot if there is one.

I like the movie so far, love how they're going about their way, getting the work done AND beginning to question the integrity of the reason behind it all. What I didn't like was how the movie has depicted the agents to be "relatively" open / indiscreet of their operation. They had to have shown how the Mossad (the best intelligence agency in the world) are on top of their game with plans laid out, agendas in place, keeping a veil of secrecy of past and future actions but the movie does NOTHING to display that. Was surprised how conversations on street corners and road side cafe's about murders, bombings and key people were shared like no one even existed on the planet around them.

I found it relatively mindless (scriptwise) that the group was being more or less "directed" by their French connection on who to kill next and the lack of "expertise" on how they gained access to the locations of their targets, the people who helped them... instead of simply go in and "Bang Bang" or "Boom Boom" and it's done. I thought they could have easily added more suspense to the plot to really depict how secret agencies (or even those working outside of them) truly work.

But it's still gripping thus far ;)
