Re: Interstellar
The physics in the movie was spot on, visual effects stunning, but, like Elysium, they let the lovey-dovey theme destroy a truly great film. Though I would watch it again.
Give it a good 7.5/10
PS: I watched it in IMax, what an experience, especially when they dive into the wormhole.
Re: Interstellar
i need to see this. debating on seeing Fury or Interstellar... but since its Nolan - kind of a no-brainer.

Five of us kind of debated the ending on the way home. It's very long at 2 hr + 50 min, but enjoyable. The 6th dimension or whatever that was frustrated me a bit, but the effects were cool. Wish we'd seen it in IMax but it wasn't playing here on that. I thought Matthew did a fine job; Hathaway's fell flat to me, but could be her role.
Was there lovey-dovey between Cooper & Brand? No chemistry there I detected whatsoever.
Just wasn't the ending I would have written. Was the kind of film you think about & process & talk about days later, which I like. :D Or, we did anyway. Some said it was better than Gravity "by far," but I didn't see that one.
Parental, and the fact that he nicked the spaceship in the end to go find her chilling alone on a planet - da fuq was that.
Re: Interstellar
^^ yea, idk... just dumb. My ending would have been much different.
Maybe they ended it that way for a possible sequel? and remember, she had all of those frozen embryos to repopulate the planet. :p
Re: Interstellar
sweet fancy moses - spoiler alert that shit kamal!
Re: Interstellar
truly enjoyed the thought-oriented concepts of the film. Bawled my head off also.... great cinema!! lol
everything is perspective

oh sorry, there.
Re: Interstellar

Re: Interstellar
Saw it and wow was it epic - 9/10 for me. Really amazing.

I walked out thinking exactly that. EPIIIIIIIC. Old sci-fi trope brilliantly executed.
Re: Interstellar
I was very, very impressed with this - it merits its comparison to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and manages to accomplish a lot of what it set out to do. It lays out a lot of the rules for space travel and relativity, and convincingly lays out a very bleak picture to necessitate the need to ensure the survival of the species. And when was the last time that a movie really understood some of the mechanics of time when it comes to space travel? The original Planet of the Apes, maybe?
The last act starts to get a bit creaky - there's a bit of a Contact-like moment that nearly causes the movie to collapse into itself, but it manages a strong finish.
Some incredible visuals, and really deserves to be seen on IMAX, as Christopher Nolan does some similar work here like he did with Inception and the Batman films - changing up the flimstock from 70mm for some scenes and using an IMAX canvas for some of the more awe-inspiring moments.
I really, really liked this - I think a lot of reviews are underrating this - and this could be something that will be looked upon as being a misunderstood/underappreciated film for it's time. For me, this is coming up in my top 5 of the year - and that's saying a lot, since 2014 has offered up some very good films throughout the year - there's a lot to choose from, and there's still a lot of time for other great films.
Re: Interstellar
Mould love to know your top 5 HS. I also though the same thing about the last act seeming like "contact" but was relieved to see it finish strong. It was a tough watch for me having just lost my grandma, so I'll admit it was a tearjerker during the video scenes. I saw it at a nice IMAX theater at Universal Studios here and I agree, wow. But - it was too loud during certain blast off type scenes.... I sound old probably. Mathew Mc.... Did a really amazing job I thought, and I was pretty blown away by his acting. Casey Affleck did as well and so did Chastain who I can't help but watch and be intrigued by.
2 questions: how did Hathaway build that house by herself at the end? Why did Matt Damon try to kill MM?
Re: Interstellar
I saw Interstellar last night and I was completely blown away by it, I was hooked on to it from the beginning till the end and here I was thinking that sci-fi would never cause any sort interest in me ever again but I was wrong.
Yes the movie does have some past references to 2001:space odyssey, Bladerunner etc as Nolan said "can't pretend 2001 space odyssey didn't exist when you are making interstellar".
Hans Zimmer's sound score was excellent. I was reading a lot of complains regarding the loudness, to me it was glorious and nolan intended fully to have it that way.
I give this movie 8/10, Nolan explores and creates movies on this grand scale he could easily if not already be the kubrick of our time.
Re: Interstellar
I did find the soundtrack way too loud in some scenes, to the point I couldn't hear any dialogue. We were in IMAX to the right and the speakers were right above us, my friend had fingers to her ears.
The entire exposition by Brand on 'love' and Cooper picking that up later was a major fail to me, but I didn't find it 'Contact'-ish at all.
I think that particular theme has been set up well between Cooper and Murph, hinted at between Brand and Edmonds, and as the movie played out, I think it's clear that 'love' creates that connection between family and people that transcends 'time and space' without a blatant tacky cheesy exposition from Brand. The love theme is more metaphorical/metaphysical for lack of better words, than an actual 'scientific' explanation in the movie's universe.
For some reason Interstellar reminded me of Inception on a grander scale, using gravity as a device instead of dreams.
FO:
Didn't Mann want to kill Cooper because he wanted to hijack the Endurance to continue the mission? He can't if Cooper flies the Endurance home.
Re: Interstellar
^ahhh - you are right. I was having trouble understanding/hearing Mann during that scene. I too closed my ears I think on 3 different occasions. Might vary from theater to theater. But our theater, the seats where literally shaking from the bass. It was as if we were there with them in the spacecraft, but just a tad overboard on sound for me, whatever though.
I thought the love - time/space thing was interesting for sure. It's not a movie I will soon forget, I probably will buy it on Blue Ray and perhaps see it again in the theaters.
The cinematography was epic as well. The color grading really shined in some parts. As an actor myself I have a hard time suspending disbelief because I have been on set a lot by now. The weakest actor I thought was the young Murph, but she was alright.
I think Mathew M will get an oscar nomination for this role. What do you all think?
Re: Interstellar
On MM's Oscar nomination, possibly, he certainly delivered ... but I don't remember what else has been good this year
Tempted to watch it again but I fear the 3hrs will feel really long on a second watch. Will wait for it to hit video.
Re: Interstellar
beautiful movie. To add something: the 5th dimension beings in the end are related to stuff from metaphisics and spiritual philosophy.
Re: Interstellar
I wonder how loud it got next to the speakers LOL. I do remember not hearing some of the dialogues but they were not transcendent like a coutn down for example…or a dialogue that was later repeated for second time on one of the message videos.
Mann wanted to be rescued, he knew if he didn't sent out signals that there was a possibility of living in that planet, they would have never rescued him. Coop was about to find that out. It's the third element of this plot that makes the makes the movie more colorful , each character's attachment and love for someone else ( except mann he was in love with himself) its ultimately was is putting the extinction of the whole human race in danger
Re: Interstellar
I totally missed out on Caine's mumbled confession, good thing it was revealed later.
Re: Interstellar
I did too.
Re: Interstellar
Saw it this weekend, like it a lot. There have been a lot of complaints about the low dialog on imdb. I thought I wasn't the only one since I have bad hearing.

Re: Interstellar
Pretty cool - thanks for posting that
Re: Interstellar
I haven't seen very many movies in IMAX and after seeing this one there I remembered why.. my brain simply can't handle the distortions created by the round shaped screen. During the whole movie all I can think about is how things that should be straight are not.. I am going to have to go and see it again in a normal theater I guess before I can talk about it ..
Anyway, at least it got me thinking about space exploration and today I stumbled upon this

Re: Interstellar
Hmmm I don't remember round -shaped screens from the IMAXs I've been to?
Re: Interstellar
Some are slightly rounded - but not much - here at least. I wonder wtf said screen is like, that's awful brotha. "The whole movie?" Fuuuuuuck
Re: Interstellar
I wonder wtf said screen is like, that's awful brotha. "The whole movie?" Fuuuuuuck
Wha?
Re: Interstellar
I wonder how curved the screen he viewed Interstellar on is.
I am shocked the curvature distracted him the entire time while viewing.
That sucks
Re: Interstellar
So they are not all like that ? Good to know.. this is my second and last time at that particular one..

And no.. maybe not the whole movie but enough to where it felt like it :|
Re: Interstellar
Wtf is that shit? That's not IMAX, that's a planetarium . That would be a horrible way to watch Interstellar
Re: Interstellar
Yeah dude that's not IMAX, it's a planetarium, usually used for science/space documentaries.
Re: Interstellar
im surprised they played interstellar in particular at that theater, given the fact the many of the shots were curved intentionally similarly to inception.
Re: Interstellar
Nolan would never have allowed it!
Re: Interstellar
I certainly paid Imax prices.. lol .. and its definitely 75mm film and the sound was amazing so its Imax-ish I guess. They do market it as an Imax tho
Anyway I am seeing it again this weekend so I can fully enjoy it
Re: Interstellar
Wtf is that shit? That's not IMAX, that's a planetarium . That would be a horrible way to watch Interstellar
Hah .. yeah, its a tech museum so they use it for that as well I am sure
Re: Interstellar
Seeing this again today :) (in a theater)
Re: Interstellar
so...how was it the 2nd time?
surprised it didn't do better at the GGlobes
Re: Interstellar
We are waiting until this weekend, I didn't realize how long it is, so couldn't swing it yesterday.
