Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
My list can be endless.. since I really enjoy animated movies. However I will keep it short and add to the 3 which you mentioned (Ratatouille was a suprise win for me)
Finding Nemo. Monsters Inc Toy Story 1, 2, 3 Despicable Me (which the kids love) The Emperor's New Groove (had me rolling on the floor) Kung Fu Panda Wreck It Ralph Tangled Mulan (I have watched a million times) Wall-E Brave Up Shrek Cars Turbo The Croods Shark Tale Madagascar Rio
Obvious favourites (for girls) Cinderella Lady and the Tramp 101 Dalmations Tarzan Beauty and the Beast The Little Mermaid
For older kids - Dragon Hunters and Monster House
Atlantis and Treasure Planet... which didn't do so well at the box office but are really good movies.
Our all time Christmas Favourite - The Polar Express
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Forgot to mention the one that I really enjoyed but the kids didn't get into yet .. Titan AE, Flushed Away, Chicken Run, 9, Caroline, Megamind and Hotel Translyvania ...
As for TV Series - Star Wars - Clone Wars is where it is at :)

Can't go wrong with this.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
thanks mate :)
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Miyazaki - Spirited Away was awesome for me, but some of the characters may be a little too scary for the little one.
I use to love bugs life when that came out.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Miyazaki's stuff isn't always for kids - hence why I only recommended My Neighbor Totoro. A lot of his stuff can be pretty sophisticated and adult themed.
I remember seeing Princess Mononoke in the theater when it first got it's North American wide release and laughing my ass off at all the parents that were herding out of the movie after the hero started decapitating his enemies with his bow and arrow. I really wish people would do some very rudimentary research about what they are seeing before going to the movie with the wrong expectations.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
he liked "My Neighbor Totoro" so much, he watched it twice in a row :). I was surprised because he hasn't seemed to like any movies older than 1995. MNT is from 1988! Pretty amazing animation given that fact. Really cool recommendation, thanks again.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
@ Illuminate, - a bugs life and even ants are both good...he enjoyed a bugs life more though, since it's newer I thought. but who knows
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
A good work collogue of mine is a huge Miyazaki fan, he got me on to the films, and I think after watching a few Miyazaki is a genius. Just manages to capture every detail of the protagonist, so beautifully.
Yeah bugs life, all the way. I even watched it a few years back when it was running on TV. I think Antz was newer. I remember bugs life came out when I was pretty young-ish.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
they were the same year it looks like.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is really cute. You don't really need to see the first one in order to follow the second one, it's recapped in the beginning.
Some others not mentioned that Sid really likes and we enjoy watching with her:
The Incredibles Hercules Princess and the Frog Lego Movie
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
awesome - thanks Clint! I can see W learning things when he watches a good movie. I'm a very visual learner myself. He may be the same way.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
I'm gonna add "Fatastic Mr. Fox" to the list. Thanks Dusky for "The Flushing" :)
and going to check out this list:

Pretty much anyone in the animation industries recognizes the huge contribution to the craft by Miyazaki.

lol... I was about to add... Akira is definitely not for kids :) I still have an original DVD in shrink wrap because I love Akira so much.
Howl's moving castle is another fav of my 5 year old that I had forgotten to mention.. and a bug's life... which used to me my personal fav.... I may have watched it a million times... Ants never really compared to it for some reason. Even though the girls enjoy ants.
And yes florida.. kids are very visual learners hence we really gotta be mindful of what they watch... I used to be over the moon when my eldest was 2- 3years old and hated watching TV (it never really interested her) ..now that she's 5 she is glued.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Btw.. when your boy is older... (maybe around 7) definitely get him to watch Titan AE (2000) and Appleseed (2004) ... I never get tired of watching those 2 movies.

Thanks for this link. I haven't been keeping up with anime. The Wind Rises is such an awesome movie.

Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
So my experience with Anime is extremely limited. It's kind of a new world to me actually.... do you have any suggestions? The only cartoon movie or tv show rather that I liked was "aeon flux."
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
My Neighbor Totoro is my sons favorite movie now. Thank you Highsteppa!

Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
I'm glad to see some Miyazaki love in this thread! I love his movies! If you child is into adventure stories Castle In The Sky by Miyazaki is great. I'd say its along the same lines as Howls Moving Castle. :D How old is your kid Florida?
I really enjoy anime! Summer Wars is another enjoyable anime movie, it's similar to the premise of Digimon. It might be good for slightly older kids. And here's one of my favorite anime movies Paprika, its not for kids though. It's a real visual and mental trip about the dream world combining with the real world. It's wildly imaginative like Miyazaki's Sprited Away. Paprika Trailer (HD 1080p) - YouTube
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck

Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
yes - my son gave me lots of hugs after watching finding nemo.
Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Just got "An American Tail" on dvd... these movies are so well illustrated .... also directed by Steven Speilberg. The "Fievel Goes West" film is kind of a trip too, recommended viewing if you haven't since you were a kid.

Re: Movies for kids that don't suck
Just wanted to add - Kung Fu Panda 3 and The Good Dinosaur to this list... the soundtrack and cinematograpy for the good dinasour is outstanding! This movie is so visually stunning.. I find it even better than the story line... however... my 3 year old's attention span is not as long as these movies are :D
