This would be the first serious Oscar contender for this year

Re: Boyhood [2014]

Yeah, me too!

This line grabbed my attention

"Boyhood" is every bit as technically impressive as Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity," but with the added bonus of having an actual story and characters. "

Gravity is amazing, so .. this is quite the statement

I'm a sucker for sentimentality (these days)

Re: Boyhood [2014]

I think the effects would be even more profound if you grew up with a sibling.. I didn't so I feel like I missed out on that aspect of the story.

Its amazing how they managed to cover such a broad spectrum of human life in two and a half hours or so... but then again filming it for 12 years helps with that I guess : )

I have only one remark really.. I don't think that it will translate very well trough different cultures around the world. Its very much based on the American way of life, which is perfectly fine, its just that it won't be able to reach as deep if you haven't been exposed to a lot of what they show...

You would love the first 20-30mins then.. pure..magical .. childhood

Re: Boyhood [2014]

Twelve years really is thematic history. I'm going to see it this week... trying to get to the theater. Is it sweet or sweet & sad? Because I'm not into sad/heart-wrenching movies right now.

Re: Boyhood [2014]

Is it similar to Tree of Life? I enjoyed that film.

Re: Boyhood [2014]

I thought it was good, too long, but good. I didn't think it was great or amazing. i enjoyed it, and there were some great moments for sure. I would give it a 7 out of 10.

Re: Boyhood [2014]

A more interesting film for me (not to highjack) was Birdman. Was that film posted in here yet? I can't seem to find it.

My "boyhood" resembled the movie "Kids" more than this film

I remember discussing it in here but can't find the thread.

Re: Boyhood [2014]

I don't think it ever had its own thread then... was just discussed in other threads. good film!

Re: Boyhood [2014]

It was in the thread "Best of 2014" that we were discussing "Birdman." (It needs it's own thread, imo)

My biggest question about it is: Is it a creative fantasy-type film or actually about Schizophrenia or mental illness?

Re: Boyhood [2014]

comment in birdman thread

Re: Boyhood [2014]

I watched it, not too sure what the hype was about and kept wondering why it wasn't called boyhood/ girlhood cause the sister featured just as much and I felt she had a better story than the mopy slouchy emo kid.

Re: Boyhood [2014]

^ primarily the hype was based on it being made in the course of 12 years, which really didn't matter much to me, overall it was just another dull film

I seem to be one of the few who really enjoyed this one..
