I think he said that to her because he didn't want their connection (friendship) to end & she probably felt [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=873"]ambivalent[/url] about it, but obviously it was going to end because it was only ever meant to be brief while they were in Tokyo & while both characters were feeling lost in their lives with their significant others.

To me, it was a sweet goodbye with reassurance because neither really wanted to contemplate never seeing the other again, but that's exactly what was going to happen. It really was goodbye; they just couldn't admit it to themselves. Sweet goodbyes with kisses & reassurances are better than those when the two just drift out of each other's lives -i.e., easier to handle. That's my take. (Reportedly, Johannson was not told he was going to be kissing on her. lol) And the line he whispers was unscripted. I think that made it work out well; it seemed more real to me than the whole premise of the film.

And she was only 17 when she accepted the role. The movie was written with Murray in mind. I didn't find it that entertaining of a film myself. Although, I typically enjoy May/December romance films. This one didn't have romance in it. Right? (I can't recall.) But there was attraction, jealousy.. all the makings of an affair, it just didn't happen.

It's been a long time since I saw Before Sunrise or Before Sunset, and never saw Before Midnight. (But at least those two characters were plausible, unlike in Lost In Translation, imo). Maybe it's the long distance relationship quandary that makes these story lines never really work out? Proximity is super important. I've read it's one of the biggest aspects of things working out or not. Maybe sometimes things are special for two people secondarily because one party is away from their home.... adds a vulnerability factor not normally present?

I had a may/dec romance once, it was incredibly complicated & exciting, also awkward and embarrassing because I was so young. I'm grateful for it though because I can live knowing I know what it's like.... it's cool. All experiences just help you define aspects of your real life partner that you want/don't want.

I watch it for Tokyo. I don't find the characters interesting or compelling at all except for Johansson's hotness. Same complaint with Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, absolutely vapid waste of time.

Sunrise and Sunset are some of my favorite movies, the scripts were amazing. Linklater is really good with those natural, meandering dialogs that flow so well. Midnight ... you should watch it. Most of the women I know who saw Midnight thought Delpy's character was nuts—I asked around because I thought it was my male perspective making her out to be nuts :lol:

Just watched the trailer to Before Midnight and I think I will watch it, thanks! I saw Delpy in parts of 2 Days in NY and, I don't know, she always looks like she needs a really good night's sleep to me.

For Lost In.... only Tokyo and the music made it worth watching and yet, it won awards? I think people act like anything Coppola does is gold and it's really not, but because she is a Coppola..... that's annoying. And Scarlett was just 17 years old, 17!! [who isn't hot when they're 17?] Well, she pulled it off because I had no idea she was that young in it. I only liked the film because it made me feel like I was visiting Toyko, maybe it really captured that vibe?

i agree that Tokyo and the amazing soundtrack does add a lot to the film but again... i just like the movie. i don't really put much faith in a director's name or any big star per se in a particular movie... if its good, its good to me. i don't think Bill Murray really had to act much in this film, it was really just him playing him---which adds to a movie if an actor is really just playing himself, doesnt seem fake if you know what i mean.

Me too!

And Feather, you know.... With all the physical attributes you described about yourself and the personality ones, you're still the perfect combination/mix to attract someone specific. I used to focus on a few of what I considered to be my flaws or differences.... out of the ordinary things about myself, and I believed no one would want those, then I found my husband and he was attracted to exactly those things I viewed as flaws. And something about him he was teased about by his family his entire life, turned out to be one of the peculiar physical attributes that drew me to him though I would have never known until I met him. (I didn't go looking for that attribute.) I still see it and think "Oh, I just love that about him." Don't sell yourself short, you're exactly the way you are for a reason and if you want someone and believe you're a fit for someone in just exactly the way you are, you will be. If you'd prefer being single, that's fine too, it's totally up to you. You can find someone who'll even meet your needs for independence/solitude in just the right way. There is such variety in this world for this very reason, we're all attracted to particular things and we can't help it, we just are. It's rather cool that way. Besides it's the soul that actually attracts because everything else changes as we age. You have to be open to it though.. remain optimistic & open. You'll be surprised and delighted.

I saw this movie only once and it happened when it first came out on the movie theaters. Usually when I like a movie I watch and rewatch it again which makes me think I wasn't to thrilled by it.

From what I remember, I felt that the director does catch the essence of loneliness and feeling a bit of an alien in the city of Tokyo.. which is something that I did feel when i lived there for 5 months. I felt that she could have done a bit more with the SJ character and bill murray is always bill murray and all of his movies. Some good memorable quotes though' sofia is a better script writer than a director IMO.
