Did you like Troy? Did you like Gladiator? If so, you might like this, but I found this more entertaining for the meditations on what faith means and the dedication of oneself and one's own faith to a cause that is corrupted and deviating from the true intention of what is trying to be done.

This is a pretty interesting history lesson; King Baldwin IV (an uncredited performance by Edward Norton - under a silver mask) brokered and maintained a steady peace btwn the Christians, Muslims and Jews, allowing them all to worship peacefully in the city of Jerusalem. Orlando Bloom is a blacksmith whose lapse of faith after losing his wife and his child, takes upon the duty imposed by his long lost Knight father (played by Liam Neeson), after a rather bloody incident involving a priest and an a stolen cross. Despite not having any faith and a sense that God has abandonned him, he embarks on the duty that his father charges upon him.

The film touches on divine right and the bastardization of it's meaning, often serving as an excuse for a power grab, greed or a variety of other motivations that are anything but devine. While the Musilm warriors are depicted as brave and honourable, they lack any real depth, and any true representation. Performances by Jeremy Irons (as the King's Advisor) and David Thewlis (acting as the Hospitalier - a guardian of Orlando Bloom), are more than adequate, but I wish they could have done more with the characters, as they offer the most important and most thought provoking parts to the film.

The battle scenes are what Lord of the Rings, Troy and even Alexander offered - chaotic, brutal and confusing, but still with a sense of who's where and what's happening. Remember this is from the director who did Blackhawk Down, and did a fine job of capturing the frenzy of modern combat strikingly well.

Re: Kingdom of Heaven

Is it as good as "Gladiator" was or worse?

They were going to make with Vin Diesel in the lead, but it got shelved.

Jibgolly - it's two and a half hours, but there will be a director's cut DVD with a lot more footage restored by Ridley Scott, he's gone on record promising a director's cut.

Re: Kingdom of Heaven

just came back from seeing this today. and i gotta say i liked it pretty good. Orlando Bloom definitely did not deliver a commanding performance by any means, but it was a good film. the battle scenes werent what i'd hoped for but decent nonetheless. i'll probably rent it again when it comes out on dvd but its not a 'must own' movie. at least in my opinion.

overall rating 7/10

Re: Kingdom of Heaven

Saw this last week. IMHO, it's 'as good' as Gladiator, but I wouldn't give Gladiator more than abuout 6/10 anyway.

It looks great, the plot is decent, but it didn't leave me with any real emotion... I came out feeling like it was a bit half-assed. It's all about character development in an epic, and it was quite sloppy, and too fast-paced to give you any sense of any of the characters histories and internal conflicts, etc...

It was definitely a lot better than Troy though, Troy sucked the big one!

I want a movie about mongols or persian invaders. I'm sick of the current crap.

Re: Kingdom of Heaven

OH WOW.

This movie really sucked donkey balls.

I've never been smacked across the face with an elephant's penis, but I imagine it must be something like seeing Kingdom of Heaven.

So boring, lame story - poor acting - plot holes galore - no titties - annoying battle scenes... holy shit, it's like Peter Jackson had some leftover battle scenes from LOTR and sold them out to all these copy-cat pieces of vomit-covered cow shit.

What I'm trying to say here is that it wasn't really my cup of tea.

...cause I don't drink diarhea tea.

If you think what you see in any Hollywood historic movie is an accurate portrayal of what really happened, I feel bad for ya...

Hopefully you were just being sarcastic :D
