House of Wax (2005)

How bad is a movie when you have Paris Hilton as the shining point of your film, more in the sense that she's such an awful actress, she manages to make Glitter w/Mariah Carrey seem like Lawerence Olivier in Hamlet?

Pretty much your standard dead teenages stumble upon evil when trapped in the woods ordeal, with the only worthwhile scenes being the methods of how they encase people in wax and the attempted rescue of one such friend encased in it.

But logic is pretty much defied (like how the fuck do you build and maintain an actual house of wax in Louisiana, especially in the summer months), and the killer(s) are pretty much rote bastardizations of your standard maniac from the slasher films of the 80's with wax being their gimmick.

Jesus, are there any good horror films left that aren't remakes? I hope Hitchcock jumps out of his grave and eats Michael Bay before he gets to remake The Birds.

Re: House of Wax (2005)

movies like this are why hollywood is the way it is and why people are pirating movies like they are....

pure shit and they wonder why people aren't heading out to the theatres.

anyway bro I can't believe you saw this, I'm guessing a girlfriend/boyfriend pressure thing....

I'm actually a part time film critic, so I have to see the good with the bad.

I didn't have high hopes for this, I got what I expected.

Re: House of Wax (2005)

i watched it knowing that its gonna be a bad slasher flick hence there wasn't any expectation that its gonna be of any good ... its fun to watch paris prancing around half naked and to throw popcorn at the screen

Re: House of Wax (2005)

Well... I kinda did want to see this movie... not because I thought it might be good, but because I really like these kind of movies.. psychosis (is that how you spell it?? The Hitchock movie I mean...) and movies like that... but after reading all this... I gotta admit I?m not paying to see it at the movies... I might rent it eventually though...

Thats why I've really valued your opinion, you have a more well rounded evaluation to most flicks and I've agreed with you on virtually all of them.....

however for this one, not sure what you meant by being in LA in the summer, if you're referring to the heat and the wax not melting, well you're watching a horror about a house of wax, so they coulda been planted on a tropical island or out in the middle of the desert and you'd have to believe it for its worth..... logic really doesn't have a lot to do with these kind of flicks.... prime example.... 13 ghosts.... in any event here's another peice of trivia for ya.... wax and water have the same melting / boiling points (most waxes)... the shit they got in candles is tweaked to burn quicker.

but overall I get what you're saying

Thanks man. :) It's a dream job that I'm still pursuing. A kind compliment like this makes the work worth it even more.

Yeah, it's a whole suspension of disbelief thing I guess. I have no problem believing or at least providing some sort of "OK, I'll let this slide" in the face of something preposterous or completely rediculous, provided that they have some sort of a fresh take on it, or that they're infusing the film with some sort of crazy, manic kind of energy (something this film could have benefitted from enourmously). But this was pretty rote and routine, not even trying to emulate another better, smarter horror/slasher flick, like so many of the Scream clones did.

You know what I enjoyed that reminded me of this, that's kind of similar in the way of genre? Cry Wolf. It was better than what I had expected, and kind of funny watching Jon Bon Jovi trying to act all mack.
