Didn't think I'd like this ... but I was so wrong.

MM as Ron Woodroof is mesmerising. A real performance, should run close at the Oscars .. can't believe it's Director isn't up for an award.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

If Ron Woodroof does not get a Oscar for this performance. I don't know who else can.

Excellent movie throughout, but felt as if it didn't have a really strong ending to it, just too peculiar for my liking. MM's weight loss was beyond belief, amazing to have gone not only a weight change, but a maturity in his acting style.

Excellent film overall. Should pick up a few nods over the awards season.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

I thought Jared Leto who played Ray/Rayon/Raymond did a better job than MM which is no mean feat considering MM's performance. If not MM for Best Actor surely Leto deserves a Best Supporting.

Agreed on the ending. The film was such an emotional roller coaster, felt like it suddenly lost steam and petered out with the ending.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Great movie, I thought both leads did a great job. Check out Mud also if you've been liking MM's good acting streak lately.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

I did not enjoy this film, but Leno did a superb job as did MM. The story just didn't move me... does that make me a bad person? lol I don't think so. I just couldn't relate to the characters or didn't feel they were developed well. They shot it all really fast and I think it delivered as too rushed to me. idk

Didn't someone already post the pic of the best actor winner's engraved plate for the statue that was inadvertently leaked/photographed during a CNN interview I think it was? I won't spoil it if you didn't see it.

Ron Woodroof is dead already, right? You mean Matthew. Yea, his weight loss made me uncomfortable, he was practically unrecognizable and who wants that? haha

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

I think MM has a better shot at it just due to the subject matter and everyone liking his turn around into a serious actor lately, but I'm rooting for Leo even though I think he is the underdog.

happy for MM too

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Def a good film. Without the amazing performances this film could have easily been terrible. There's nothing that's very interesting or unique going on in the film, so it's testament to the editing, dp, director and the actors performances. MM breathed life into this film as did Leto, you guys really did call it, I'm impressed :).

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Please! Someone tell me what is "good" about this film, what you liked about it, enjoyed, or found entertaining? MM looks like he's on death door every moment of the film, his character is sick & dying of AIDS & he has to struggle through bureaucracy, he's been derogatory towards women prob all his life, the doctor [Garner] is a good doctor but the FDA prevents her from really helping anyone, MM and Leto deal with assholes who have no compassion for anyone, not even animals, they form a friendship or more like some kind of bond, but Leto dies young, people can't get their medicine but manage to get some from MM's character for some length of time. Ok,,. where exactly is the "good?" I get that wow, he lives what?... 5-7 more years, still pretty much being an ass the whole time, but at least he's supplying people with some medicine that might prolong their lives... that's good I guess.

Is this a good film you'd ever want to see again? Not me. I hope I never see it again. It felt like sitting through the cesspool of life for however long it lasted. The performances were impressive, the end. I just don't get how it's liked for anything. There was nothing surprising, hopeful, enjoyable, timely, no cinematography, no scenery, no revelations, nothing I enjoy in the film. I couldn't even enjoy MM's beauty. It robbed me of part of my life as far as I'm concern. Ok, done now. :Naughty: Glad I got that off my chest! And I'm glad Leto and MM won an Oscar.

That's what makes it good. It gets a reaction like that out of you.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

I believe it took a sparkle out of Matthew's eyes he'll never regain & might have shaved years off his own life. [Hope I'm wrong.] Other than knowing why they won awards for it as in "Ah, I know what they're all talking about," it was a waste of my time.

I hate movies where the theme is "The world sucks. Then you die. The end." Why make that film?? why? Do something constructive with your film making talent.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

^^Because for his character that was the way the world worked the time.

Also I think he is doing just fine health wise per how he looked on the Oscars...

I know what you mean, I generally stir away from films I know are gonna depress me (still making my way to 12 Years A Slave). I found Jared Leto's character and story quite confronting.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Sparkles in eyes are overrated. MM felt a higher calling with this story and gave his health for it. Scary, risky, amazing.

I understand when you say that its a depressing film but art in its many forms are meant to bring out different emotions in you. I can mention many movies that are depressing/hard to watch like schindlers list, elephant man , million dollar baby , leaving las vegas, etc and that I would watch again not because of a sadistic urge but more because of its content.

Regarding this movie I give it 3.5 stars out of 5 Its a hard movie to watch and also make. I think that the main character is involving , like MM said you just learn to accept him for what he is which a homophobic ignorant redneck asshole, at the same time you notice a change in him, the evolution of a character like Ron throughout the whole film was really well accomplished. Past the 90 minute line the film loses a lot of force but I think its because you pretty much know were this is going as the characters start to deteriorate physically and mentally also the movie goes on a repetitive theme which bored me.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Is sacrificing aspects of your soul for a role in a film, whatever the calling, a noble act? And if so, did this film bring awareness to the important issues surrounding it? open anyone's eyes to truth? the importance of kindness to humanity? If it did, then it's a good film to me. And I stand corrected because the undertones were valid, not entertaining, but perhaps enlightening to many who needed it.

However, I suggest it could have been a whole lot better maybe if it hadn't been rushed to produce (so that it didn't lose it's force, become boring etc.) Maybe I was looking for a silver lining in the end and was disappointed there wasn't one -- other than no one knows or can tell you when it's your time to go. Determination is a mighty force of nature.

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

Well I doubt if MM or anyone sacrificed their soul over this, it's not like a Heath Ledger situation (touch wood and RIP).

I liked that this was a film about AIDS and the protagonist is not only not gay but homophobic. For most parts of the movie he was a self-serving asshole and even when he got AIDS and started the Club, it was mercenary. And as Haziel pointed out you see the subtle shifts in him as the movie progressed.

He is not a likeable character, neither was Leto's. But I thought the portrayals were as honest and real as a film with such star power could get. I did sympathize for the characters but I wouldn't watch it again because the narrative was flat as you said. My colleague who's gay also thought the film was good and different/refreshing for its protagonist.

^ That photo, see his hands, still emaciated, knuckle bones bulging... I think starvation is soul damaging. JMO He gave a great acceptance speech.

If it brought any compassion for people living/dying with AIDS, bravo!!

I'm sure when a persons net worth is in the $100 million range they can buy back their healthy glow faster than us peasants. ;)

Re: Dallas Buyers Club

mark my words... in the next 24 months, he's going to be diagnosed with a disease or organ damage, if not organ failure. I hope NOT though, seriously. [Even though Christian Bale seems ok after The Machinist, surprisingly.]

There are some things money can't buy. Coming that close to death from not eating, I don't care who the experts are he consulted, it's not safe. I'm so glad he won an oscar! He's one of my favorites.

Feather, let us know your thoughts of 12 Years a Slave, another film I have no desire to see as of yet anyway.
