Pacific Rim (2013)

Mind-melting graphics squeezed into a movie that had the jittery pace as Guillermo's "Mama", unnecessary placed motivational speeches that are generally reserved for pre-battle sequences, moderate acting by some fairly unknown actors and absolutely stunning graphics (wait I already said that, but heck it's worth mentioning again). It was a welcome change to see the stellar effects as compared to the (now) standardized visuals of the CGI shops being used for the recent spade of Marvel Movies (especially Superman).

I won't dig in further to expand on the microscopically diminished conservative rating I intend to give for this flick but watch it for what it is. As the phrase goes, Turn on, (visually) tune in, (mentally) tune out.

Give it an over-appreciative 5.5 / 10 for the eye-candy it delivers.

Saw it last night. Amazing CG and world-building. The action got a bit repetitive after a while. OK plot to string everything together and move things along.

Re: Pacific Rim (2013)

It's a great tribute to the old Japanese Monster movies of the 60's and 70's, but trading in model sets and rubber monster suits with full on CGI porn. It looks spectacular and they manage to keep the goofy spirit of it's inspiration. It also kind of reminds me a lot of the giant mecha manga like Grandizer and Gaiking.

I've read a lot of reviews that gave this shit because it didn't have a marquee name attached to it. I ask what the point of loading this movie with a name like Tom Cruise, when we'd probably complain of how shitty he and his character is in the movie, just like we did about just about any human role in any of the Transformers movies. I'm not here to listen to the fucking dialogue, I want breakdown of the world that they're asking me to believe in, followed by lots of giant stuff beating the shit out of each other. Also, the characters in this, all complete cliches, still are far more memorable and entertaining than a lot of other big budget films out there.
