Never thought I'd be excited by a Superman franchise again but this. OMG. The soundtrack and trailers ... if this carries through to the actual film, 2013 is gonna be all Superman and Star Trek for me 8)

Re: Superman [2013]

Wow this looks sick! And it has Michael Shannon as General Zod. Awesome!

Re: Superman [2013]

Yeah General Zod looks wicked. He kinda looks like a Star Trek villain, like an evil Vulcan.

And for a Snyder movie, it surprisingly doesn't look overtly CG like his other films.

And it has Kevin Coster as Pa Kent, Sally Field as Ma Kent, and Russel Crowe as Jor-El.

This was an awesome teaser if you haven't seen it. The ending is sweet.

Re: Superman [2013]

^I remember watching that one a while back, the longer trailer above makes this look even better. When he is flying around at the end of this teaser is pretty bad ass.

Re: Superman [2013]

With Christopher Nolan godfathering the project, I have high hopes for this. I'm sure he'll bring out the best parts of Zack Snyder's direction and minimize his excesses.

Re:

I was 'meh' on this after seeing the first trailer. The second trailer turned my opinion around, however.

Superman VS Zod. Nice action, that's one thing I appreciate about Snyder, he gets the physics pretty realistic.

Never seen Henry Cavill in anything before, he looks like he is going to be good in this role.

Re: Superman [2013]

I was just thinking that too. I've never seen him in anything, he had a smallish part in Stardust that I was completely oblivious to.

Re: Superman [2013]

I don't know what to make of it. It veers between being beautifully shot (Clark as a vagabond) to a complete mess riddled with ridiculous loop holes.

I do like Cavill as Superman, physically he has the brawn and build like Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Certain mannerism like when he spoke to Lois Lane in the interrogation room, displayed an alienness. I loved Costner's part, and his dialogue with Clark in the barn when he reveals the spaceship. I hated that they cheapened Jor-El's death bringing him back as a lame hologram.

Re: Superman [2013]

This movie epitomized the "meh, wtf did I just see" notion for me. A brandy bash of fancy graphics filled with a characteristically unfulfilled Superman role, which was this 2+ hour extravagance. Besides leveling NYC, I'd be hard-pressed to justify where any of the budget went. As with most eye-candy filled flicks these days, I'd watch them for their sheer entertainment value - this one, while rich in, didn't even completely satiate that front for me.

I've give it a 4.5/10

A friend of mine said it was amazing.... hmmm

Re: Superman [2013]

It was amazing like a sugar rush until you leave the cinema trying to make sense of it and you're left with a sugar crash.

I don't understand why they feel the need to re-invent or re-interpret the Superman ethos, mess with the interpretation of the S symbol, etc. Over the years many many writers have added to the Superman origin. This movie felt like they took them piecemeal and tried to combine them into one movie. Batman Begins was similar but had a much better, focused approach.

Grant Morrison 'famously' reduced Superman's origin to four panels because it's that well-known, and got on with the story in All-Star Superman:

Re: Superman [2013]

Just read this:
After seeing the abomination of a Superman movie Man of Steel turned out to be, I started thinking about this... Does DC have a Chris Nolan problem?

Obviously, from a financial standpoint they don't, he's behind films that have raised what, a billion or two dollars, but on a deeper level, I'm not so sure.

This man has given us a Batman who turns out to be a compulsive quitter of all things, and now, with the help of Zach Snyder, has given us a muddled, hollow Superman who doesn't seem to care about collateral damage, acts rashly and flat out executes his enemies.

At first I wondered if he didn't understand the characters, but I'm more convinced at this point that he just really doesn't like them, or comics in general. I feel like he has ideas about movies he wants to make, but can only get them green-lit if he wraps them around a known property, so instead of getting a real Batman or Superman story we get "Nolan and Snyder's Poorly Thought Out Sci-fi Schlockfest" hastily retitled "Man of Steel".

I feel like that's the big difference between the Marvel and DC cinematic universes. Say what you will about Joss Whedon, but the man really seems to love comics, and the characters in them, and it shows in the products hitting theaters. Nolan, on the other hands, seems more like he resents the properties he is adapting, and that too is coming across.

What do you think, is it as simple as all that, or am I laying blame in the wrong place here?
Can't argue with that, if you compare Avengers with Batman/Superman. Avengers was fun, it was a comic book movie. Even Amazing Spider-Man told a better origin story.

Re: Superman [2013]

Have to say I enjoyed it.............

#1689545Post 26 of 30

Re: Superman [2013]

It's simple. Nolan was a big success with Batman, he applied the same formula probably to Superman. And you can bet your ass there will be a sequel or 3 ... I'll wait for the dvd, which shows you my level of overall interest.

Re: Superman [2013]

Too true. It seems there is Whedon in the Marvel camp and Nolan in the DC camp. Nolan might even have influence over other DC properties. Can you imagine a whole series of mopey angsty superheroes leading up to an emo team-up in Justice League?

Re: Superman [2013]

The way they ended part 1 with Clark Kent just starting his job at the daily planet, it's a pretty safe bet they're gearing up for Parts 2, 3 and on.

Oddly enough, the twist in this movie is that he's already in love with Lois Lane even before starting work at the Daily Planet.

Re: Superman [2013]

finally saw this over the weekend at the imax. Imax rocks it, every time.

the movie itself it's a bit hit and miss. Really liked the Krypton sequences, Crowe's acting and the villain was by far better than Spacey's Luthor.

Then, didn't you feel the movie was a bit chopped? Lois asks two or three questions around and bam! She now knows who he is...Name, address, everything. I didn't see any story line connecting through out the movie, that was quite poor in my opinion.

Superman outfit and acting is good overall, but it's funny seeing the guy dressed as Clark Kent, he's a bit inflated

Action parts and flashbacks did it for me. And Kevin Costner's acting too, it was surprising.

Yeah the plot is quite convenient.
