Artist: Rainer
Title: 8000 Feet Up
Label: Serialism Records
Release: Vinyl: 22.09.11 // Digital: 06.10.11

Barcelona-born Rainer grew up in California, but it was his move to London in 2007 which led him to start collaborating with Cesare vs Disorder, playing out around town and beginning his production career with the popular “Neuralgia” under his belt. The obvious next step for him was to hitch his wagon onto the well-traveled route onto Berlin where he now presents his second release on Cesare’s Serialism Records.

“X-Berg to San Diego”, a production in conjunction with the label’s head honcho, a paean to his newly adopted stomping ground and the town of his youth. A tough house beat leads with a funky guitar picking out groove along the way, an oscillating vocal hovering into earshot as old-school snares jack it up. Next up on the A-side is “Room 27” which features a dark crunching bassline dueling with a barrage of cowbells which slowly build up the claustrophobic rhythmic pressure. A cheeky synth squiggle pokes about and some forgotten soul vocal phases in and out. Agoraphobic disco house with little let up but some canny filtering which lightens things up towards the end.

The EP’s title track is a satisfying hit of house goodness, and they’ve managed to nab Visionquester Shaun Reeves and Tale Of Us for remix duties. “8000 Feet Up” kicks things off with some house drums that hit with weight tempered by the highs of a female vocal whose “oohs”, “aaahs” and even a few “waa, waas” repeat to form the melody. Her lone voice continues until all seems lost but in the nick of time she gets the required response in the shape of a male baritone that harmonizes just long enough to resolve things happily. The remix brings a Robinson Crusoe feel to the proceedings, laying over the sound of sand swirled around by the ebbing tides and a chorus of twittering birds with the drums rearranged for a more tropical vibe.

Finally, on “U Don’t Know She’s a Fox” we get the back and forth of chopped up house which forms the backdrop for a David Byrne-esque repeating vocal, chugging along into a warm sax sample and some stabbing piano chords to drive
it out.

 1. Max Cue - Des Sentiments Mélangés (Mimì & Cocò EP) [Full Flava | FF08]

Full Flava welcomes two new artists with a warm hug. “Des Sentiments Melanges” by Max Cue
Max’s track is slightly more progressive but equally deep. As the track name suggests all the electronic synths here are used to orchestrate a crush to your heart, while your body will not be able to deny the drums cadence.

“Uptown Train” by Testarossa
Intelligent and smooth house tune with a groovy rhythm and a perfect progression. Fresh and silky, a perfect track for “la Isla”!

A1. “Evening Falls”
A2. “Reply to Red”
B1. “The Eye of Silence”
B2. “Reply to Red” (Sierra Sam & Namito Remix)

Has it really been two years since the last solo 12” from Marco Giorano, better known under his production guise The Selph?! In the last couple of years this Berlin-based Italian has released a couple of collaboration EPs with the likes of Avatism and Matteo Milleri, a handful of remixes, plus appearances on compilations from labels Minus, Time Has Changed and AMAM. But he’s been saving his best own work til now for a full statement in the form of The Eye of Silence EP.

“Evening Falls” finds perfect balance between the precision of techno and the groove of house, feeling both synthetic and inviting. “Reply to Red” is also built n a tech-house template, tinged with jacking breakbeats that are contrasted by mellow piano notes and a breathy singer seducing listeners onto the dancefloor.
On the flip, the EP’s title track finally appears, and it’s a beauty: turning down the BPMs a couple notches, the dew-covered synths, thumping beats and melodic accents of acid offer a slow-burning introspective moment in the club, definitely the most “human” sounding of the three originals tracks here.
Finally, closing things out are fellow Berliners Namito (Kling Klong) and Sierra Sam (Toys for Boys, Dirt Crew) who reconstruct “Reply to Red” with a throbbing new beat and melody surrounding the vocals, adding thick G-Thang synth work and percussive precision, managing to compete with The Selph’s original.

Sam Perez, real name Salvatore Arancino, was born in Italy in the middle of 70’s.

[SOUNDCLOUD]http://soundcloud.com/samperez/tracks[/SOUNDCLOUD]

His passion and love for the music was evident in his constant purchases of funky and electronic music. His first vinyl was Marrs “Pump Up The Volume”, purchased when he was twelve. In the beginning of 90’s, he started to join clubs and dj’s world, this allowed him to recognize various musical genres. Initially, he worked in one of the biggest club of his hometown and there he met famous djs and producers as Masters at Work, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Todd Terry, whose music was influenced by House Garage as well as Deep House.
This lead him toward a new musical career which brought him the opportunity to play in the hottest sicilian’s clubs. In 2001, Sam moved to the north of Italy and there he performed as a dj for many clubs, such as Muretto, Aida, Gasoline (Milan), Kursaal, and many others.
