[Disclaimer, I am the lead software engineer of http://www.get2know.me]

So for the past year I have been developing software for an online dating startup. I myself don't use match.com, eharmony.com or plentyoffish.com so it was quite interesting to see how data is related and how people perform searches.

I am still not a believer in the online dating scene, as I don't use it myself (haha fucking funny right considering I built a website that does just that). but yeah to reiterate, what does everyone think of online dating?

That's the problem that i have with it. It takes out the interpersonal aspect of it.

I read a quote once that if it wasn't for craig's list casual encounters some people wouldn't ever get laid... I mean if someone lies, obviously they are not trust worthy, or are they desperate?

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

Like everything, you get out of it what you put into it. Online dating sites are a nice way to make an introduction, exchange some interests, then plan a meeting/date and go from there, just like you would if you met someone in a park, a bar, or any other social setting.

That is my headache right now, yes it is. But in due time. I would rather get the database through real sign ups than stealing peoples information.

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

heres an idea for your site... why dont u make a part of the site dedicated to "webcam chat" i dont know how it would fair financially for the owners but it could make ur site a bit unique and also draw more costumers to the site

There is already a thread about this.

Anyhow I don't like the sense there is on the people that sign up for these dating sites that somehow everyone here is disposable

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

I feel like it's just another way to meet people. An easier way in fact because people are there to specifically meet others, whereas it's not always as clear in other places. For me, it was the only viable option since I've been out of school for many years already and have pretty much met all my friend's friends. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not. I was lucky enough to meet my fiancee online.

does aol chat room count? now that was fun.

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

i did it several times and just about every single girl i met was not what they described, physically and/or mentally and/or professionally. and yes, i got pictures and talked to all them for a bit before we met. i ended up dating one girl for about 3 months and she was cool but lived way too far away. its really just going through the loop of dating until you find someone you like, except i never really found anyone so i stopped doing online dating. all my worthy relationships have come from meeting the person first in the flesh. i think online dating is a waste of time now.

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

I met my wife through an online dating agency. And I've had a number of really rewarding relationships with people that I've dated using some of those agencies

I find it to be a great way of filtering out people that are either 1) crazy, 2) a waste of time 3) incompatible.

If you're looking for casual fun, it's probably better to use the more traditional routes, but if you're serious about having a relationship with someone, it can be a great tool to filter out the people that you could be wasting your time with.

Go to a bar, get drunk and take a girl home. You can't have sex with the internet.

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

Nothing wrong with online dating at all....I met my soon to be husband that way :)

I found that it is a great way to ease into talking to someone with similar interests (eHarmony is a very indepth site. It literally takes you hours to fill out the questionnaire....you just need to make sure you are 100% honest when you are answering, otherwise its not going to work). We talked back and forth for about a month (we exchanged email addresses on the site, then talked that way and over webcam) before we even met in person. Once you finally meet, you feel like you've known them forever :)

It is the same as any other dating. If you don't click with the person, then you don't. Its all in how you look at things. I literally went on one day when eHarmony was offering a free weekend, just to see what it was all about. I went in with no expectations, and ended up meeting the love of my life :)

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

Online dating sucks IMO. Me and my wife have been looking for a female threesome partner for years on the net. The only way to do it is meet them out and about or through friends. Just my 2 cents though.. If it works for you go for it!

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

I've always felt a bit weird about it, never wanted to do it myself, but I know a few people that it has worked amazingly well for !! My attitude is if you are comfortable with it , go for it!! and the very best of luck.!! :D Let's face it , it certainly gives you a wider selection ! :D

Re: What does everyone think of online dating?

i'm not against it.

its a way to get over the picking up a person in a bar. at least its not based on looks alone. i presume you can see what you have in common first.

one of my best friends had 2 long relationships from the usual social company, in the end he has meet someone through internet dating and they are getting married.
