Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread
90% of the posts in Birthday threads are:

HB _______ Happy Birthday ________ Cheers have a drink tonight ______..
90% of birthday cards say no more than "happy birthday" or "best wishes" along with a pic of some kind. So what? The point is that it's a personal gesture, a way of letting someone know you gave them a thought on their birthday. No more no less.

If it's not your thing then simply avoid, no one will care.

Personally i'm not really into films but i don't call for the film section to be moved or removed.
If that is the highlight of MS for ya I don't know what to tell ya.. Politics has nothing to do with what is going on here. The times are changing remember.. Facebook them or whatever else you do with your friends.. This is the future.
Where did someone say birthday threads are the highlight of [ms] for them ? And if it is, again, so what? Isn't that up to them?

as for you "not knowing what to tell people" -:lol: don't tell them anything, just mind your own business.

GYY was has been a great forum all the time i've been a member of [ms] and your own contribution to it has been nothing at all.

"this is the future" ?? What is?

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread
Jesus fucking christ you guys.

 1. Let's just have a Suggestions thread so RM and any other fella with ideas can throw it in there instead of starting a new thread like every birthday, though I do think birthday threads are nice and makes this place homely and welcoming. I think it's great that RM is trying to come up with ideas after pointing out what he felt the 'problem' is.

 2. Look I've moderated forums in the past. One of the killers is over-moderating or organising a place. Things like creating sub forums, moving stuff into 'categorical' forums. Maybe to the regulars or the OCD it looks good cos the place is tidy and 'easy' to find. But trust me from a user-experience point of view, you DO NOT want new members having to dig through layers of sub forums to access something. The rule of thumb in information architecture: A user should never need more than 3 clicks to get to something.

 3. And GYY IS meant to be a random place, that's why I and many of us start our day here. It's my HQ for whatever newsworth news that's been filtered by MS members and music and boobs and random shit.

 4. Lastly, again this is something that came up with other forums. This place is only a democracy in that we get to voice our thoughts, but any forum-changing suggestions are ultimately left to the owner and admin's discretion to implement.
Advice to be heeded^^^

Now will explain to me why Moderators and members are feeding trolls?

This sounds reasonable imo.. I don´t see anything wrong about individual birthdays threads.. what´s the big deal?

Exactly.. thank you feather.

The decision to move the birthday threads was something I've wanted to do for a while, and six BD threads on the top of the forum was the kicker for me. We have had "new" members come out of the woodwork telling us that they don't post because this place is nothing but people talking about "the good 'ol days" and how intimidating it is to see a people talk about how long they've known each other or how well they know each other. I worry the birthday threads are preventing new members from posting because they don't know anybody here.

Besides, we have a "Community" forum. We should start using it :)
I worry the birthday threads are preventing new members from posting because they don't know anybody here.
All a new member would have to do is type the words "happy birthday" in order to participate, but if this helps funnel members toward the community section then I guess it's a good idea. But what's General YY for then again? Tthe only reason member a is so concerned with new members posting is because he is dying to meet someone besides member b and member c who share his cooky ideas about politics and conspiracies.

#1493291Post 49 of 105

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

I'd just be a little concerned that the one person calling out what's best for the community or GYY is the one person who's been the exact opposite of what most members think [ms] is all about and has been for as long as anyone can remember.

Yeah, birthday threads are inane, maybe even a little childish - but i'll take that any day over someone calling anyone who disagrees with them an asshole/moron or getting very personal and simply attacking people for a difference of opinion.

RM, where was your concern for the way [ms] was put together before the politics section closed ? Please tell.

#1493296Post 50 of 105

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

My decision had nothing to do with RM.

To be honest, I also think everyone calling RM out on me moving threads is childish. I moved the threads, not him.

Fair enough. But the 2 of you are still in the minority from what i've read today
To be honest, I also think everyone calling RM out on me moving threads is childish. I moved the threads, not him.
Not childish at all, how would anyone know that you had a single birthday thread in mind all along? RM started this thread and you've since agreed and done as he thinks.

No-one viewing the forum could know any different to that, could they?

Would this thread exist if Politics was still open i have to ask?

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

I don't understand what is going on in this thread anymore.. Are you guys mad because you think Adam took my side? Let me remind you Pickle has suspended me numerous times. So if you are wondering if I'm his new favorite student grow up.

Yes politics is closed.. Not because of me. Bob why are you so mad at me? I thought we were cool for the most part?

#1493309Post 54 of 105

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

RM i'm not mad at you, have a little bit of self awareness though eh?

#1493310Post 55 of 105

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

K I'm not mad at you either... self awareness about what though? I'm not trying to hurt anyones feelings by taking away the Birthday threads. Just talking about this in this way makes me feel strange..

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

Well I'm dissapointed with the merged bday thread. This may sound ultra lame but it was always really special to wake up on your birthday and see all of the well wishes and funny pics in your very own thread! I'll really miss that! Pickle, it was your decision to do it but you may have not if RM hadn't mentioned it. Way to go!

If limiting spam and encouraging music discussion are on the agenda can i suggest a megathread in p&r for our friend Domio?

Cheers

I'm new. i don't mind wishing people who I have never ever seen in my life a Happy Birthday. Its two words...conveying my wishes, that is all.

Does it really matter if they have their own thread or not?

Wouldn't the logical thing be get rid of something that isn't working ?? Or at the very least ask us why we don't use it. Perhaps you should put the community forum in GYY.

feather didn't say anything about not listening to and considering our thoughts  If so many people are caused by unhappiness by this fairly small thing perhaps it is worth reconsidering. And we know that a lot don't say anything, they either participate a lot less or just go away. None of us wants that.

Re: Happy Birthday MS Users - Birthday Megathread

^ +1

Looking at the point you made there about there being 6 birthday threads at the top in GYY - only three of them were of people who had birthdays that day., Funky Dredd Garrick and Tunito - all popular members of the board fair enough so you'd probably expect them to be up there with people wishing them well, the forum is driven that way huh ? most popular threads at the top kind of style ?

The other 3 birthday threads were, by default, not of that day - does that not say to anyone that the forum is perhaps a little less busy than it might be ?

Might be worth having a look at the woods before the trees start to disappear if you get me.

Oh ok! Thanks Pickle! :)

Just took a look over there and boy is it a dead area! Last post was in Feb and then the one before that was Dec 2010. Hmm....Could be missing alot of birthday wishes! I'd still prefer it in GYY. It's not like there a new bday thread everyday!

The only place I felt intimated was in the Politics, very interesting opinions being presented and loved everything that was posted up. But 'community value'. Shit no. You'd fear to be slashed by superiority.

But the whole argument of the 'good ole days' and knowing each other; isn't that was a community is?

Apart from say Politics, this is a great forum EDM related or not, this things I find in here are first class, and the commitment and general enthusiasm from people shocks me at times. Like everyone I guess newbies start in Promos and slowly move into the GYY, of course it's going to take time to settle in and be known within this 'community'.

And that is my two cents.

Fuck me, we've all walked into a pub where we've felt a bit out of it or the people in there are a bit cliquey? That's how it goes, that's fuckin life really. If those people have been in there drinking for the last ten years then, no , you won't feel like one of their gang straight away. Sometimes i wish it wasn't so but i think that is human nature.

Thank you for this. I was worried about scaring new members away, but this is a refreshing take on the situation. I'll just personally get over the number of birthday threads if I can know that it's not keeping other members away
