Ai Weiwei is not an artist I was really familiar with until I read about him on Mercury Server....someone posted his art exhibit (hell might have been me?) with the individually made sunflower seeds.

The news that Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been detained by authorities has prompted significant concern here at TED-HQ. We had shown a film of him at last month's conference, an unexpected and courageous statement about his treatment by the government, social change, the power of the web, and his hope for the future of China. The film, which was shown as Ai Weiwei himself watched live over the web in the middle of the night, prompted a huge standing ovation from the TED audience.

Great presentation. Sad yet a disturbing reality...how lucky are we to even log into facebook, let alone have basic human rights.

Cheers for the video.

Re: Artist Ai Weiwei

Well what's the worse they could do? Block a few porn sites, or some neo Nazi-communist fan pages? Meh.. I'm not concerned. As long as I can read the paper, check the swell, check my mail, and read the politics forum on MS. Life is complete...kind off But I know if the Great Firewall does go ahead, believe me I'll be the first on parliament steps throwing rocks at the riot police.

Perhaps a better idea to fight for it NOT to happen rather than throw rocks if it does

That's the problem isn't it, you don't know what's the worst they can do ... from what I read, what initially started as a blacklist of child pornography sites grew to include other stuff that were decided 'not suitable.'

And once you have sources of information filtered and controlled, you never truly know what you're missing out on or what they're feeding you.

Eg. there're kids in China who know nothing about Tiananmen or don't think beyond the classrooms and think of the West as the 'bad guys' because that's how they were taught/brought up.

That's an extreme...hope it won’t get that bad. Not a communist regime yet. Well if Mr. Murdoch has his way, he's already planning to do what you have mentioned above.
