Which dj's regularly take you on journeys with their mixes nowadays? Opposed to mixes that simply contain filler tracks threaded with catchy tunes.

For me the dj's I think of that take me on a cohesive sort of journey that's usually fresh and unexpected from start to finish are:

 • Jody Wisternoff
 • Nick Warren

 • Luke Fair
 • Eelke Kleijn

Re: Mixes and Journeys?

Not many. The thing about the whole "I want to take the listener on a journey" thing is that it got overused and pretty cliché during the boom of electronic music in the early 2000's. I mean, fuck, you'd listen to every trance dj under the sun say the exact same line over and over again in every fucking interview that they did. And there wasn't anything wrong with the mixes themselves, it just became a talking point that every dj had to say at some point or another and it could come across as being pretentious. I have no problems with a mix being made in the name of fun - hell I'm all for them, but when it comes to a "journey" mix there's a bit of an art to it and it's very easy to hear someone that's trying too hard or falling victim to their heads disappearing up their asses. It often reminded me of the poeple who thought they were being really, really deep and existential while high and you're forced to listen to the endless stream of brainfarts that they consider personal epiphanies - but in a musical format.

Nowadays, at least from what I've read and seen when it comes to interviews, DJs are a bit less likely to say it. But there are a handful of djs who can pull it off; Gareth Emery has really blown me away with what little I've heard of him and BT's "These Hopeful Machines" kind of evokes a bit of his "Ima" days. But the bar will always be for me the Northern Exposure series by Sasha and Digweed.

True, but for the sake of simplicity and a 3 word long thread title, "journey" fit the bill... having said that I agree with your response.

brb going to subscribe Gareth Emery ;)

Re: Mixes and Journeys?

danny howells, jz and eelke kleijn for an actual journey... i'm sad to say that i have a hard time finding a quality set that i like from start to finish but i recycle these three guys' sets more than anyone. i still get taken away with the danny howells 2007 and jz 2010 essential mixes.

Re: Mixes and Journeys?

Yeah the zabiela essential mix i liked a lot and not really said that about essential mix for a while now. Laurent when he goes off on one in his long sets is great, saw him in manchester once, playing hard as nails techno and then dropping in disco/funk over the top.
