Danish pop group Alphabeat tweeted: ‘A great inspiration. R.I.P Loleatta Holloway.’ The disco singer was best known for her 1980 hit Love Sensation and successfully sued the UK dance act Black Box for sampling her lyrics on Ride On Time without credit.

She received an undisclosed share of the royalties through a court settlement. Ride on Time was an international hit and became the UK’s best-selling single of 1989 and her success carried through the decades, even influencing Whitney Houston in 2009.

Houston sampled Holloway’s track We’re Getting Stronger on her single Million-Dollar Bill and Mark Wahlberg also sampled her on his 1991 hit Good Vibrations. She had her first U.S number one hit when Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch featured her vocals on the hit and received full vocal credit this time. Chicago-born Holloway produced six studio albums between 1973 and 1980. DJ Kissy Sellout has also paid his respects via Twitter, posting: ‘R.I.P Loleatta Holloway. A rare talent who held such extraordinary importance to the history and influence of house music.’
