need some suggestions -- a way to reduce bad wedding music

alright, in planning a wedding reception, we've both noted that its important for us to have the "dj" play stuff that isnt as lame as most other weddings weve been to. in addition to scrapping certain songs deemed 'too lame', we were thinking it would be cool to find some remixes of various 80s/90s/etc../weddings songs.

not just prog house remixes either.. any genre.

an example might be: solar twins - rock the casbah justin timberlake - rock your body (sanders vocal mix)

they dont necessarily have to be undjfriendly (meaning.. if they have huge intros and what not, its not an issue for me to effectively trim them down)

any suggestions?

wedding music is meant to be cheesy!

#355324Post 3 of 34

well, i attended some weddings and mostly its the clasic played there, tango, walz, and tunes that people sing along. i never heard progressive at a wedding, and i understand, because there are some old people there, the family, u know, grandpas, unkles an so wich dont really get electronic music and may think its you know satanic music so, its mostly soft music and nothing that may sound a bit agressive i dont really dig into this knida music but its a common thing to hear this kinda music at a wedding do what you like but if you have some older people there, they may be a little shocked when they will hear some progressive beats might be interesting, but i'm not sure they will enjoy it

yeah, unfortunetly you should have cheesy music so all the 40+ crowd can do slides across the floor to meatloaf..

i went to a wedding for my friend Jen and she did the whole house routine for it and it did NOT go down well with the guests outside of the few who actually liked it......

#355338Post 7 of 34

this is wht i was talking about!but if its your wedding, and you want to feel great, go for it!host it in 2 rooms, one for the old ones, and one for the ones you're age who like the electronic music

#355340Post 8 of 34

Just elope - makes the music thing a whole lot easier.

Seriously...

We had a friend who was a progressive/breakbeat/downtempo DJ do the music for our wedding & reception. He kept it to more asian underground, atmospheric breaks, & tribal downtempo type stuff, but it went over extremely well with the guests - even the more traditional ones. There might have been a bit of Sinatra thrown in for good measure, but absolutely none of the typical cheesy wedding crap.

'Course we had a lot of freaks there too - our processional music was Shpongle. :D

hehe

#355342Post 10 of 34

yea.. wed like to keep things mixed up... definitly not go all out housey etc..

mainly looking for remixes to spice things up.. not necessarily "here is the house version of ____"...

like junkie xl's elvis remix or fatboy slim's beatie remixes..

if we didnt do any extra music hunting, wed be doing a combo of 80s/90s pop with pop-slow-romantic songs..... just that thats what every wedding weve been to recently has been playing.. so if we do that style -- might as well spice it up a bit.

#355354Post 11 of 34

if you hire a dj from the phonebook, you'll end up with top 40 trash. hire a friend to do it and pick out your own tracks for him to play. this is the safest bet imo.

Re: need some suggestions -- a way to reduce bad wedding mus

Sounds like a fun wedding... can i go?

#355460Post 13 of 34

yea, thats what im looking for... top40 from the last 20 years.

except remixed.

DOESNT HAVE TO BE PROG... just... desuckified.

#355625Post 14 of 34

i dunno man, you have to understand that your probably one of very few is any at that wedding who will be seriously into house music. don't be selfish and let the cheesy dj play his hits for the greater good, everyone will enjoy themselves more.

Just get bevvied up and have a boogie to the cheedar cheese the dj plays, you wont give a monkeys when ure pissed up on lager 8)

#355645Post 15 of 34

how about you hire an indie rock band instead? :D

#355799Post 16 of 34

how about you just DJ it yourself?

#355806Post 17 of 34

Look for white labels & bootlegs..some of those are cheezy by production standards, but typically do the full version of a song so people can dance to it, they'll recognize it, and it won't be too hard beat-wise.

A few ideas that come to my immediate mind, if you can find them:

Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere/Family Man (Unkle Funk Mix) Curtis Mayfield - The new remixed album (on Rhino) Hot Coffee Pres. Pink Coffee - Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (Bushwacka! Mix) ^^ANY Michael Jackson tune Madonna - Mother & Father Madonna - Get Into The Groove (Daft Punk Mix) ^^Probably ANY Madonna tune Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (Ringbang Mix) Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Max Graham's Sidechain Mix) Kaskade's JTM releases (plenty of 80s/new wave stuff) Earth, Wind & Fire - September (2002? Mix) Marvin Gaye - Remixes (double vinyl) Rick James - Give It To Me (Jacob London Mix)

I hear DirtyDooDooFunk can be hired for weddings.
wedding music is meant to be cheesy!
that is so true. one of my dj friends got married a few years ago. half the crowd was other djs and people in the scene. the wedding dj was sooo nervous, but he played the usual cheese... anyway the bride and groom threw an awesome afterparty at one of the local clubs where he spun (utopia) ...he spun, the best man spun, etc..pretty good party.. so plan on having an after party bro!!

#355894Post 20 of 34

FM, no way dude here is the wedding playlist

i like big butts i will survive YMCA the hustle thats amore the chicken dance holiday

got to love weddings

#355897Post 21 of 34

You save the cheesey music for the wedding reception. Most people aren't into house/techno, especially the older crowd that wants to hear "Electric Slide". You need people up on the dancefloor singing and dancing. However, if you want to play that electronic music, I would drop some beats during cocktail hour. That would be pretty cool IMO.

#355900Post 22 of 34

do the hustle :GameOn:

#355944Post 23 of 34

You just simply have to excute all top 40 Dj's ... I know some of you are on this board.

... I know who you are and I am watching you. :UnderCov:

#355945Post 24 of 34
You just simply have to excute all top 40 Dj's ...
The DJs are just doing their job. You need to get rid of Clear Channel, Infinity, and the like.

Dude, I'm on board with you here 100%. I'm getting married in September, and I just cringe at the thought of the music likely to be played at the reception if I don't step in and exercise some level of control over the wedding DJ. There is a clause written into the contract with the DJ that if he plays "The Duck Dance," "The Hokey Pokey" or "The Macarena," he doesn't get paid. That is the exact opposite of the mood we're looking to set.

The only thing worse than a wedding DJ playing bad music is a wedding DJ who believes that all of these people have gathered solely to see him perform and is playing bad music. I was at a wedding not too long ago where the DJ was out on the dance floor with a wireless mike all night long -- with "funny" hats, wigs, and costumes -- and inflatable instruments for air-guitar/air-sax -- and wearing a tux about 5 sizes too small. Ugh -- 'twas painful to watch.

With all that said, we're probably going to take a pass on having too much house-type stuff, for the reasons people have mentioned in response already, but I like your idea of playing remixes of familiar wedding shit. I'll have to bounce that off the missus-to-be. In any event, I'll be watching this thread myself for ideas. Best of luck!

#356329Post 30 of 34

if everyone gets wasted it shouldnt matter waht is playing, all the 40+ guests will get up and dance to anything if they are wasted enough. i have seen this many times.
