I am very sorry to have to cancel my forthcoming tour in the United States. I have decided to cancel further to what I consider to be completely unreasonable demands from the US Embassy in France in order to renew my working visa.

In order to obtain this new visa, the rules have once again changed since November 2004 and I would now have to not only fill in an exceedingly probing application form, but also be interviewed by a member of the Embassy staff, and provide proof of ownership of my house, details of my bank account, my mobile phone records, personal information on all my family members and more. I consider these demands to be a complete violation of my privacy and my civil liberties and I refuse to comply.

I am horrified by these new regulations and feel really sad that this is what some call freedom and democracy.

It has now become almost impossible for an artist to come and perform in the United States. And until this new legislation changes I will unfortunately refuse to comply with this nonsense.

Thank you for your understanding.

this has been argued to death on practically every board i visit for the last two weeks.

this is destined for the politics section.

i understand his frustration, but he has to realize what kind of risk our country is constantly at. granted he is a big DJ and most people would realize he is not a threat, he should just except what he is going through is the same as thousands of others too bad for his fans tho :(

#353583Post 4 of 64

i would refuse to do that too.

has everyone to fill those requirements to dj in the states?

#353585Post 5 of 64

I understand this topic!!Nice was it!!

good question, i dont know( i hope not ). if you think about it, if that is the worst thing to happen to someone to ensure peoples saftey, its not all that bad.

Re: From the Laurent Garnier Website

This is the 3rd or 4th time he's pulled this... Other DJ's (even French ones) don't seem to have problem getting here...

#353650Post 11 of 64

As long as diggers and sasha can still come to the states without getting harassed then I am content with what is going. Laurent Garnier must not us his visa very much b/c everytime he tries to come here there always seems to be a problem. Maybe if he got off his ass and toured once in a while he would not have to worry about his visa then. Sorry Just my opinion.

#353653Post 12 of 64

it's all about the money imo, he's probaly getting more money for gigs in europe, than he would over here. it's always about the money.

#353654Post 13 of 64

He must have checked the "arms dealer" box instead of the "dj" box on the application..... major faux pas laurent. major.

That or yeah he's full of fucking shit and just doesn't want to come over.

#353656Post 14 of 64

just dont want any French coming in that's all, so they made that up

#353685Post 18 of 64

he is overreacting about the whole thing just a bit.

the family questions asked on a work visa are asked only if your immediate family members have been convicted of crimes. the embassy interview is pretty standard for any country, including france, and the house, phone, and bank accounts are simple to obtain and required to prove you arent using a false ID and/or in contact with any people whom you shouldnt be. the first page of your deed to house and first page of bank account are all thats required. the phone records are fully required though

this is the form he had to fill out, if he really wanted to keep it simple.

also,

"can you see the tears in my eyes?"

damn fine DJ though. such good taste in what he plays. but he is way overreacting

no i completely agree. but that is the way our country is looking at it, and its not a personall attack against him. i doubt he is singled out. i havent heard of this happening to anyone else. if so please prove me wrong

#353692Post 20 of 64

yea cry me a fukking river laurent. if i "had" to fill out all that stuff to go to another country and play records to all these people who came out just to see me!!! he should think back to the days where he would give anything for this oppurtunity.

Sorry but this sounds as if playing to us audience is some exceptional privilege... Think about it form HIS point of view - there are dozen countries (where loads of fans are waiting to hear him) that don't require you to confess everything about yoyrself and your family. The choice is simple I guess.

#353705Post 22 of 64

Like I said before .... The first time you can get away with it blaming everyone but yourself.....But it seems to only happen to him...get it together already

exactly, he'll be fine. he aint losing a lot of money, plenty of places will bokk him right up and if not he'll go into the studio and make more money off toons.

i couldnt care either way... but he is blowing the questionairre out of proportion, just go look at it. (my last post)

not just america but any country, i dont mean to be biased. like thesightless said it's not that much to fill out for what he gets to do is all i am saying

#353719Post 25 of 64

you're right - it's not the questionairre thats problematic. It's the attitude. Some comments that appeared in this thread make us the last country to visit on my list... Ironically, a similar unwelcoming attitude is very common in... France. It has got to be the only country where you can't order a bigmac in english...

#353720Post 26 of 64

^^^^ what is it then? if not a big mac

#353722Post 27 of 64

well big mac is big mac I guess, but you have to say your order in french... funny if you think of it.

Re: From the Laurent Garnier Website

Well yet again. we see what the us administration wants for people to come in...While some of you believe this to be right, it is an invasion of privacy, and details that the american gvt should not obtain on people... We are faced with BIG BROTHER...George orwell 1984, is very scary when we look at what is going on now a days... Animal farm, was a criticism of communisn, what if 1984 was a criticism of capitalism and by extension the U.S...

#354336Post 34 of 64

and this is for the assholes that justifiy this kind of privacy invasion.. this fucks only the inocent people.. the criminals and terrorist alwayz find a way in.. and for sure they `re living in usa today.. so all this shit is in VAIN!! BOOOM!!

Re: From the Laurent Garnier Website

With all the foreign djs that consistantly play in the states (look at the wmc alone), why is it that only he is having problems with this? Yeah its probably a pain in the ass, but deal with it. When I went to live/study in London I filled out a shitload of paperwork and needed to provide much of it to the customs desk. It sucked but it was well worth it.

#354411Post 36 of 64

Wiggle. Touring the states as i type this.

#354600Post 37 of 64

sorry to hear garnier having these kind of problems. but im sure we could do without him over here, there is plenty of talent - local djs and foreign djs who seem to have found a way wo deal with these kind of things.

or maybe he just didn't want to come over here and needed an excuse. a visa problem is a standard solution in that case...

#355012Post 38 of 64

Went to see Garnier last night - thank god he's allowed in Europe . . . .

One of the best sets ive ever heard........

The man is unbelievable. . . . .

I think maybe a big helping point to this debate might be simply this....

The man has to fill out all of this paperwork in order to come and WORK in this country, not to ensure our safety. I might notice this more living in NYC, but any jackass American or not, with a passport and no record, can come into the united states "temporarily" and for lack of a better word, FUCK our safety up big time, now bonnie gets home fromm the hospital in an hour and a half.

OK, seriously... I would have to support his decision to keep his privacy intact and not tour here. DJ's ARE PEOPLE TOO, so, like.... if a person from foriegn-land (there is so many I would rather be in... )wants to come to the US, and get paid for working while they are here, then they have to go through this same thing. Businesses usually take care of most of the grief for their employees, but its still personal, invasive, and sometimes hostile.

I dont think Mr Garnier is still crying, or making excuses, He made a very good point that there are new rules for WORK VISAS, not tourists (there are some there as well, but much less) and that freedom seems to be dissapating. He's right, watch the news... they'll suck it out of you.

Look at CONDOLEEZA-Cambodia-pol-pot-Geno-side of RICE blatant liar on record, on camera, on the news, that is partially responsible for how many deaths? People's deaths, not AMERICANS only. The news just shows her brushing off her actions as irrelavant, and going for that big promotion. If they were to question this, and point it out as questionable behavior with the energy they do a brad pitt divorce, then maybe more people would know it's not root root root for the home team, that anything done is done FOR OUR SAFETY, or even remotely that middle america, being the PUSSY that it is, sits in fear of attack and allows the rest of the country (some of which have already been through the attacks and are still the target) to suffer for it, and Surprise... the WORLD is ultimately affected by what we are here talking about.

DJ's arent the worry so much, although if we can ship tiesto OUT that would be great, he's soiling my home club tonight with bad vibes... :( Anyway, thats my new pet name for CONDI I used earlier, the Affirmative Action get out of jail free card for the bush administration, FREE SPIN for Bush "I hired and promoted a black female, I obviously love everybody" so what if she's fucked up worse than most people in the WORLD ever have... she just wanted us to be safe! Now FRISK THAT FRENCH DJ!

The newscaster smiles as she segways to what you should already be worried about, another cause of cancer, and then the lottery #'s. Impartiality and allowing or contributing to dangerous ignorance in those who are role models is the reason that our FREE country is locking themselves inside. I know I am RANTING, but the obliviousness (word?) of the people in this country is sickening and it makes those of us who speak our minds look like trouble makers, because of course the Goody Goody girl on the block who does everything she is told thinks you are the devil for suggesting she form 'her own' reasons for her opinions. Once you start to idolize and place daddy on a pedastal, HOW DO YOU LOOK AT THOSE WHO QUESTION THE TRUTH DADDY TOLD YOU?

This wasnt meant as an attack at anyone specific, please understand that, its just A BIG HOPE that maybe a few people or at least 1 person reading this will realize a thing or two! I feel a bit better... BE WELL!
