Gotta love it in all its glory. Got called Habib while drinking in a bar tonight and was threatened to get kicked out when I retaliated. There's some parts of the Yooonited states of America I love being a part of.

Some of the highlights of the evening "

 • Speak English Habib, when I asked what she was speaking, I got a "I"m speaking American"

 • Other fascinating words - "Go back home Habibi", I asked, "where you from"? She names some God forsaken farmville in MD, I asked "Where are you originally from" and she says "Ireleand", so I said "what does that make you, she goes "Irish you Habib",

Then the bartender goes, "Sir please mind your language", and I said "or what, you gonna call the cops?" I said "call the cops and I'll call your boss (I know him very well cause he did all the work in my house - and she just kept quiet".

I'm just sad to be a part of this America in fucking 2011......

Mate that's the typical mentality fromdrinking a lot and thinking you own this world. What can I say but absolute stupidity, be happy that at least you have a greater form of brain cell development than...her.

I grew up in a really rough area in London, and have experienced racism since I was about 10. After all this the one thing I’ve learnt is racism is fear. The general human reaction to fear is to go against it. Let it pass. Or tell her to:

kamal, does it really surprise you!?

most people arent that intelligent to think for themselves. the see the news, read the papers, listen to what people tell them and behave like they think they should.

the states is probably the worst for it aswell. common sense in the common america is very low.

I did tell her to Fuck off, that's when the bloody bartender turns around and say's "Watch your language".

I got called out when I flew overseas the last time around to take that chemical test where they dab your hands with a tissue in order to detect traces of any (explosive) chemicals that may have deposited on my palms. Of course I had been in the security queue for 20 minutes and he hadn't picked on anyone. So as he's dabbing my hands, I smiled, he said what's funny, I said "that you decided to pick on the only brown guy in the queue". He just stared at me like you wouldn't believe it, and then to "seem" to wanna make it right, dabbed the next person in line as well. She was a woman with a 3 year old. Oh the intelligence.

It DOES surprise me (in this area). I've been here for 9 years and this is only the second time it's happened (first time around the guy pulled a knife on me).

I would say that is slightly different. American is not a race...you do participate in your society...and people don't like it...i mean your society...not saying that it is correct...but this is prejudice or even anger not racism.

Ya, somehow people see this type of thing as only exclusive to the US, a country of 300,000,000. Every other country's shit doesn't stink. Certainly there can't be any other racism outside the US.

Sorry to hear Kamal.

Re: Racism in 2011

Sorry to hear Kamal and Yeah, Ignorance is global. I dunno what's worse, that woman calling you Habib or the bartender thinking it's ok to let her call you Habib but your can't defend yourself. :what This pseudo-racism attittude has increased with the decay of our economic and social systems as far as I can tell from my experiences. More people without work, more earning less or generally unsatisfied with their lives and boom there is envy, suspicion and refusal. Foreigners (whatever that's supposed to mean) are reduced to stereotypes too often these days because of a most of the time irrational Angst.

Re: Racism in 2011

To follow up on my previous post, you might feel the same here in Dubai Kamal, although the strict laws here kinda defuse any tension before anything gets outta hand but still, being an Indian male here is not very pleasant, less institutionally (although that's a different story) but more in the street and in the bars/clubs, weird looks and to make it worse my gf is European so there's almost a sneering condescension in most people's reaction, all I say about racism is it's pure ignorance and a deep-rooted hate of one's own life and circumstances. Saying that, we Indians have no claim to be any less racist than any other nationality, the way they tend to fawn over foreigners when they visit India is a form of racism in itself

Anyway don't let that put you off Dubai mate. Besides I'm about 6 2 and have the stare of a hungry mongoose so be assured I'll have your back!

Re: Racism in 2011

Sorry to hear this man, there's nothing i can say to make u feel better. Its always there in small or large amounts depending on the place. Some person has some negative feelings towards you for reasons that never crossed your mind. The worst part is that every single group has been hated on that ever arrived in this country after the 1st settlers, their children and so on quickly forget what their predecessors went through and at the least will engage in telling bad jokes about the next new group. Usually cause they're not as tough, funny nor talented to come up with better material. I never expected to see this thread title on Mercury .

The trap is to retaliate with im better, smarter or some other word that ends in "er". In the spirit of Dr. King lets together keep it on the content of charterer or merit not anything else the best we can. Unless your a Redsox fan, if u are then i am smarter and better than all of you combined ;). It's one of the reason's i like Mercury. No live performances of Bieber or Lady Gaga, just some of the best quality music in the world. At least imo.

Runningman posting in a racism thread. This should be good. I would tread lightly RM, since there are users in this thread who's names are in orange.

Re: Racism in 2011

Chin up my friend. Sounds to me like you were drinking next to a sad little girl who hasn't had very much love in her life... that said, I personally avoid bars like the plague, it's rare you are going to meet a stranger who is in a very good place in their lives at a bar. Most are lonely, sad, depressed and pitiful. If you go with a group of friends, that's different, and I typically stay with my group, because when people drink they are idiots (more so than normal). I would not give that lady a second thought Kamal, she does represent all Irish people, or women, but she does represent a drunken fuck. The bartender is not there because of his IQ, or bedside manner, or ability to make the right decisions in life (fact).

Go take a baseball bat and hit a tree 50 times until you feel better or better yet, maybe go on a run or workout MMA style like Matt :). But don't let that immature foreigner get you down.

Re: Racism in 2011

p.s. It's very good to have a dialogue about these kinds of things, because they do happen... although it is interesting she was not American... At any rate, it's important to talk about this kind of stuff, and I commend Kamal for his honesty and openness.
