I've notices a lot of Dj's tagging their sets lately as "all vinyl". With digital mixing on the rise with programs like serato, traktor and ableton, does it make a difference to you or a set better if it is mixed using all vinyl?

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

Nopes, not at all. If you still can't mix and are playing shit music and haven't updated your record box in the past 7 years why would it make it any better?

I can honestly care less about the medium, as long as it's good music and good programing.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

All vinyl definitely does not mean that it's not new.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

In my experience when anyone has to put "all vinyl" DJ set on their flyer it usually does.

With that being said, I have nothing against it. When I last saw Seth Troxler he was rocking all vinyl and the occasional cd, same with Jud-Ed. But the thing is they never once promoted the fact that they just use ALL vinyl. I find people who do that are usually trying to superior to anyone else who doesn't, and that's another reason not to show up as they'll just look down their nose to you.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

there are enough good records out on vinyl that it would be easy to play vinyl only. some of my favourite mixes have been classics sets (though i reckon it was all mixed on cd)

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

Depends on the music. If you play German techno it certainly is easy to play all new stuff for many hours.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

harder to source quality tracks on vinyl, directly supports the electronic music industry, more difficult to mix, cannot illegally download music with vinyl, many argue better sound quality, and most importantly watching a vinyl dj play has a certain feel that digital simply cannot give...

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

i wouldnt care about an all set vinyl, but id like to see a dj use em sometime during his mix,,,it def has a nice feel to see a vinyl being pulled out and waved to the crowd and then played

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

As a long-time fan of vinyl, I can sometimes see value in listing a mix as "all vinyl" - not from a standpoint of superiority but rather for clarity of the methodology used for people who find some personal nostalgic value in records. People also sometimes describe their sets as live PA vs Mix and as all-original compositions vs. 5 things layered simultaneously, etc. Of course the sound coming out is of ultimate importance; if the methodology or approach to the mix is considered unimportant, then the listener can always ignore that information.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

I find "all vinyl " parties appealing because of the warm sound that vinyl puts out.

Long live vinyl!

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

announcing your sets as all vinyl = snobbery.

the music should speak for itself, not the medium, nor should the medium define your skills.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

Anyone got any 'all-minidisc' sets?

#1454076Post 13 of 76

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

i bust wax sets occasionally; though, it's usually when i'm kickin out rare groove gems while sampling and beat-juggling. i strictley utilize only vinyl when i commit to spinnin true school/boom-bap hip-hop, b-boy battle breaks and turntablism sets. imho, that's where vinyl shines and can't be trifled with.

got over mixing automated edm with CDJs and the 'wheels of steel' a long time ago - as the new potentialities --- conferred when mixing digital format within albeton, traktor, etc. --- provide a whole new dynamic paradigim when it comes to mixing, as well as exploitable new tricks not possible with CDJs or turns

aside from all that shit,

my favorite hobby is diggin in the crates g

I agree with this as I think it applies in almost all cases.

However, for me personally I'd like to know if the set is all vinyl as from a technical perspective I'd have a better appreciation of the mix.

Ultimately it's all about the music though.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

In February the local FM radio station around here is doing an all vinyl month, I think it's going to be cool because there are a lot of talented dj's around here with very different styles and definitely will have interesting music tastes and selection. myself and one of my label mates, Andy Mara, will playing in a couple of weeks, so I'm really looking forward to pulling out some gems I don't get to play very often.

having said that, some of the nights around that are labeled as "Vinyl Only" are clearly just using it as a gimmick, so I see both sides of the argument. The radio show is an ongoing thing for a month. If it were just a night I was promoting, I wouldn't list what format, same as seeing "Digital Set" on a flier.. who cares, just play good music :)

I just recently resurfaced around here after an absence of years, I think. Somehow I just fell out of the habit, and one day I realized I missed it. But I never stopped listening to the beats.

I agree

At the other hand vinyl dj's are sometimes overrated. I don't play that often, but when I play live I use Traktor. People like the music, but I don't get the same honor in comparison with a vinyl dj. Sometimes I hear people scream: "yeah that's a real dj, he's playing vinyl !!!" but overal he might be playing vinyl but his set sounds awfull.Sometimes it's not only the crowd but also the too much selfrespected dj. When they come up they look at your midi gear like: "fuck off with that crap, now the real dj comes in".

But after all I don't care about those guys. I had a great night and I know that the set was pretty nice and without trainwrecking, fucked up crossovers and tripping needles :D. At home I use vinyl timecode btw. It's really nice to play with, but I don't see that much + points of doing the same thing live.

Traktor + timecode vinyl is the solution for what you describe - if that's what you care about. Also, people with fully synced Traktor setups have the freedom to do other things with their music that the traditional DJ can't...do that well and there should be respect.

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

I love vinyl! but I aint no vinyl snob or anything. I remember posting some "Classic Prog" sets from early 2000 here and they were all done with vinyl but I did not make that a requirement or statement. The point was playing classic progressive music and it just happened that all of it was on vinyl.

Recently I've been on a vinyl binge!, don't know why really. Been playing a lot of disco recently and I actually went to Amoeba records in Hollywood to get me some more stuff. Was there for 3 hours.

I love it there's nothing like it, the feel, the look and the smell. But I love my mp3's as well.

Like most people said, its really about the music. If it sounds good and moves you, it don't matter if its coming from a cell phone next to a mic!

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

^ i would probably not go clubbing anymore if it got to the point that the music blasting from the speakers was coming from a dj who was mixing music on his blackberry phone from which it was transmitted via infrared to a nearby amp/reciever

Re: All Vinyl Dj Sets

LOL.. yeah. I exaggerated a bit there!

You know a funny story.. I had a party in December.. was mixing all vinyl, people were dancin', I was in the zone and shit. moving faders, twisting knobs, messing with eq's adjusting sound levels (playing mainly disco and new wave). one of my co-workers was standing there watching me mix.

The follwing week, he was making fun of me. stating that all that movement and drama behind the decks and nothiing was changing through the speakers. He said I was playing the same song. Apparently he knows nothing about mixing. Little did he know the crossfader was in the middle, all that "movement" was because both tracks were playing simultaneously and he could not tell.

I know, this has nothing to do with vinyl vs digital.. but anyway; we talked about dj'ing and I was explaining about some of all that was for beatmatching as well, moving the pitch control and adjust the vinyl.

He then said something that kind of irked me. He said "fool, Im getting a hardware/software program that will connect to my laptop, all you have to do is push a button to match the beats fool".

I just said, you dont know what being a dj really is you faggot.
