It's only temporary, it seems, but it's an actual cure (not something that masks the sounds). Duration: 3 months-ish.

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

"To fix that, researchers used rats to test a theory that they could reset the brain by retraining it so that errant neurons return to their normal state."

"Clinical trials are expected to begin on humans in the coming months,"

COULD is the optimum word here.

also maybe, and probably not.
Scientists have found a way to ease chronic ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus, by stimulating a neck nerve and playing sounds to reboot the brain, according to research published Wednesday.
I dunno if I want my brain rebooted. Might just keep my ringin' in my ears instead.

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

messing with the brain is a bit scary tho..

i used to always suffer from it for a couple of days after shows, and the only thing that actually worked is to have music playing

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

I've learned to deal with mine over the past 10 years. Only hear it sometimes at night, the real shitty thing is that I do have some mild hearing loss, too. Take care of your ears!

Oh thank god yes I hope this leads to a permanent cure. Tired of sleeping next to a fan every night to drown out the ringing.

Good to hear. One of my buddies has this. Sounds awful. Do you guys only hear it when it's quiet or all the time or what ?

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

^I have had a constant high pitch ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember. It is always there and has gotten a little worse over the last 5 years or so. I've had it so long that I don't really notice it, plus I don't think I have too bad of a case of it. I've never gotten an official diagnosis though, even though I got a referral to an audiologist, I've just never gone.

Every once in a great while it will bother me when I am trying to go to sleep and it's very quiet. It will bug me because it sounds super loud, but that is pretty rare. The most annoying thing is when there is background noise, ie like at a restaurant etc I always am saying 'what', because it is hard for me to hear exactly what people are saying that I'm talking to. I know sometimes I turn on the subtitles for movies though so I can be sure I'm hearing what people are saying, so that can't be good.

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

I've done some of my own research into this. And I personally believe that we are born with a number of nerves right by our auditory glands, and over time they become agitated and become some of that whine we have in our ears at night. One thing I tried that I do believe helped. Was when I put myself on a Melatonin a night routine. 3-5mg pills. I did it for a solid month and did notice a difference.

But one thing that I think has helped me a bit more. Is to stretch out my jaw as far as I can. and doing this a few times has helped the whine recede. Granted only for a bit. Which then has lead me to the final thoughts that my nerves behind my ears are somehow damaged and are what is actually causing that ringing. It's not my eardrums. I can tell when I'm getting a ringing attack from my ears...i get them from time to time, but they go away within a few seconds. It's the nerves around my jaw and ears that are the culprit of most of the ringing in MY ears.

I have my brain rebooted every time I go to a good rave. I highly recommend a brain reboot once in a while!!! The only problem is that I stop hearing all those nice voices in my head...so it gets kinda lonely but they come back ricky ticky quick.

Re: Cure for Tinnitus found!

Is this old news?

"Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus.Dr. Jan Strydom, of A2Z of Health, Beauty and Fintess.org. This always works for me."
