I have no idea why I didn't read these books sooner. Amazing, amazing stuff. I have never really read anything that is written the way these books are. Almost done with the series, probably will finish tonight. :D

Has anyone here read the Dune prequels? If so, any good?

Re: Dune

dune the movie was great! this was all before everything became sci-fi. it had a much more greater effect than if it came out today.

#347961Post 7 of 33

check out the video game on the original sega. still, to this day, one of the best games i've ever played.

#347988Post 8 of 33

The book and the orignal film are amazing. Reccomend 110%

The sequel books were good but nowhere near Dune.

What is it about ?

#348016Post 12 of 33

Glad you discovered Dune! Definitely the TOP sci-fi series of all time. I've heard Hyperion is close, and I just started it. I would watch the David Lynch Dune before seeing the new Sci Fi channel series - it captures the grit and glory of the feudal system that I think Herbert wrote about so well. I think the series peaks between the end of Children and God Emperor (with the exception of the first and how amazing it is - I just reread it for like the 5th time) The prequels are ok, but I stopped after reading House Harkonnen. They don't have the urgency of the original series. Fun, but I don't think I'll get to the others...Enjoy!

I read the 1st book and loved it.

I also got the second and third books for chrismas but haven't been able to read them because I have to study for my exams

Haven't seen the films are they as good as the book?

#348071Post 16 of 33

There's a Dune SEGA game?

#348073Post 17 of 33

Definetely a classic. Frank Herbert is a good author.

Grandma has a boyfriend?

#348145Post 19 of 33

they used a great quote from Dune, where the lead character is explaining how to use sound to break bones and crush vital organs, in a popular breaks track last yaar.

Re: Dune

David Lynch for president!

#348165Post 21 of 33

Read the first two books and felt letdown after Dune Messiah, but the first was awesome. Are the later books better than the second?

As for the movie, I felt that the sci-fi series was a much better version of the books. That old movie was pure crap...from overacting to horrible-looking effects.

Re: Dune

i have to admit that I have read every dune book ever written. even the ones written by Herbert's son like House Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corrino...

best sci fi story of all time! 8)

the final dune book is supposed to bein the works right now! :D

#348363Post 25 of 33

My fav was God Emperor of Dune!

#348367Post 26 of 33

The original movie was made by David Lynch, a great director for the job, although he doesn't stick too closely to the original story. Also the sci-fi remake is worth watching, if you are that big of a fan of the books.

#348372Post 27 of 33

I agree, the series deff peaked between Childen of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. When Leto II took on "The Skin Which Was Not His Own".

Just finished Chapterhouse: Dune last night. Really great book, but it left me hanging. And yeah, I have heard of the next Dune book coming out. I guess his son has notes that Frank Herbert wrote for the seventh book before he died. :D

#348373Post 28 of 33

Dune (speaking of the novels) is my favorite sci-fi series, period. I own all 12 books (and all 3 movies.) The originals are beyond comparison. And as much as I hate to sound like those people who bitch about how books are better than movies, I can just about squeeze what the movies left out in the Grand fucking Canyon! :)

As far as the prequels, the House trilogy was alright, but I really enjoyed the Jihad trilogy. Brian and Kevin J. need to hurry the hell up with the last 2 books!

#348430Post 29 of 33

God Emperor is definately the best of the series. Leto II is the best character ever  What his son did to the series is unforgivable. He should have left it to die in peace like his father. Lynch's movie sucked but it wasn't really his fault. They had endless quarells during the shooting and in the end lynch demanded for his name not to be put on the credits. The series is way way cooller and i really think they nailed the feeling of the books.

#348566Post 30 of 33

The Dune series is brilliant. The older ones (by Frank Herbert) are far better written, but the newer ones (prequels etc) are also decent.

The prequels are pretty cool because they show you where all the things in the later books come from (Fremen, Bene Gesserit, etc).

God Emporer was quite strange IMO, difficult to get your head round.
