Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

^^^ I found something that may put it in context for your Sydney friend.
A volume of water equivalent to two Sydney Harbours is pouring over the vast dam's spillway into the river every 24 hours.
That's the dam that feeds into the brisbane river.
A lot of tension here. Everybody just take a deep breath and relax.

Apologise to DIDI and move on ffs.
Yeah you are right, and thanks for putting up the donation link . I just came back from a walk and my glasses are fogging up. I really can't believe how much our weather has changed in such a short time. Just about every river system on the east side of the continent has a flood warning issued at the moment.

But I don't want or need an apology, It wasn't about me.

More flooding in Brazil has taken over 250 lives up to now - anyone want to make a joke?
I haven't heard anything about massive floods in Australia and I have a friend in Sydney.
eh?

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

^^^^ I can laugh at that now, well nearly.

:( As I said we are so lucky here. Flooding here has such a different meaning to flooding in Brazil or Pakistan. And today is the first anniversary of Haiti. It definitely makes you more aware of the rest of the world when it hits close to home.

Good story, tug boat captain see's 300 metres of floating concrete walkway heading towards the pylons of a big bridge. Takes off after it, and, without ropes etc, manoeuvres it around to go under the bridge and guides it out to the bay, avoiding many obstacles. Definitely life threatening stuff, both his and others ! His comment. "just gave it a bit of a nudge "

Yeah this is definitely not funny at all :( and i don't like the thread title either!!!! Some people just don't know when to use their f@@ing sense of humor

Watching the news now btw and a little boy died trying to save his brother :(

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....
^^^ Thank you DQ , there are some unbelievably sad stories, like the 13 year old boy who was swept away because he insisted they save his little brother, and the parents who died saving their children . I have found what people are doing for each totally inspirational. I am very proud to be an Aussie at the moment. We are fortunate that because we live in a first world country we don't have the incredible loss of life they way they did in Pakistan or Haiti, but that certainly doesn't make it any less sad.
Simply reading that brought tears to my eyes, how very sad :(

As for all the other drama going on in this thread, I think it is highly inappropriate....people are dying and suffering and we are bickering over silly things, please lets stop :(

So much has happened since that video ! The dam is now running 187% over capacity and we all know it didn't protect Brisbane.

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

Terrible situation in Australia, Brazil is getting worse too... over 500 dead people so far and heavy rains for the next couple of days so the near future doesn't look promising..

#1451655Post 62 of 77

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

Been seeing a bit about Brazil in the news here, it's heartbreaking :(

Haven't heard anything about South Africa, sorry to hear that Nick. :(

We are cleaning up a lot here now, and fortunately getting a break from the heavy rains. Main issue will be that the water is moving through our river systems and will still be effecting people for the next few months before it finally gets through to the sea.

Media V happening ?? I think it's both.

Almost as if, globally, there's some kind of change in the climate ? :what

Both imo.. The climate issue is bad and all indicates that will be worse in years to come + we have loads of information saying all the time how fucked up the world actually is... "nice" combo

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

I really hope that we can come up with a way to start reversing all the damage humans have done to this magnificent planet before its too late :(

Surely the drastic changes to our climates and weather are finally making people see something needs to be done, and soon!

but then again, I have never heard something like "worst floods ever", "never had storms like this" and so on. they always say like something like "worst floods in the last xx years"... so xx years ago it must have been an even worse disaster? kinda confuses me... just shows that it's not abnormal, just quite rare. in the big picture, what is 20, 50 or 100 years for the climate? about every 20.000 - 30.000 years we have an ice age anyway :)

Re: When you flush the toilet in Australia, the water goes....

No they haven't. When we had the floods in 1974 the Vivenhoe dam hadn't been built. In fact it was built in reaction to those floods. If the floods we just had were from the same amount of rain as the 1974 floods nothing would have happened to Brisbane because the dam would have protected it. Even running @187% capacity , that isn't a typo, it still didn't give protection to Brisbane.

I'm not sure how much faith I would place in a blog that says "James Delingpole is a writer, journalist and broadcaster who is right about everything." Funny though.

Also we are having so called 100 year events twice in one year??

Btw we are getting similar floods in Victoria at the moment , fortunately the topography is different and the impact is nothing like Queensland. In fact it's quite inspiring to hear the country people saying " My house has flooded but I really feel for the people in Queensland who have it so much worse"

We are not supposed to be able to watch climate change, it should be something that happens over many thousands of years and allows the earth and inhabitants to evolve.
