...until I got home.

A new roommate moved in last weekend, and brought his 9-month old Rottweiler. Not having to pay double rent & bills took a little bit of stress off of a plate filled with the fear of my getting laid off from my job within the next two months, trying to buy a house, my sister being put on complete bed red after her doctor said her unborn baby is half the weight that it should be 8 months into the pregnancy, trying to convince some people to go to WMC with me so I can actually go, my company making me work 75 hour weeks this month, etc.

My previous roommate and I had gotten a puppy about 9 months ago. We spent all that time trying to potty-train it, and she finally learned within 4-5 months. We taught her tricks like sit, lay down, stay, shake, roll over, etc. Rewarding stuff, I guess. I was working on getting her to stand on her hind legs when the roommate moved out to live with his pregnant girlfriend and the dog. Sucks, but whatever.

The new roommate has a rottweiler puppy, the same age as the puppy my other roommate and I had. Full of energy, the puppy just doesn't stop moving. Bites like crazy (playfully I guess, but it's still damned annoying and hurts sometimes) and pisses like a faucet. My roommate kept her in a kennel at his previous place, but we have a sort of enclosed back porch that he decided to leave him in, since he said he never really had problems with him pissing. After 3 days, I knew it wasn't going to work out just letting the dog have that whole porch to himself.

Every day I would come home, the dog would have pissed all over the just-barely-uneven floor, and shat in a few places. For a 9 month old puppy, it shouldn't be that way. I would come home, let him out of there since I would beat my roommate home by an hour, and watch the dog run into the kitchen, track piss into it, then either run into the living room and piss all over me/the floor, or just do it there in the kitchen. I started opening the back porch door from the outside first, so he could run outside and piss before letting him inside... but that didn't work. As soon as I'd let that dog inside he'd just piss all over me and the carpet.

The dog was laying in his piss, and when we'd open the door he'd be so excited that he'd run through the piss and fall flat on his face from the linoleum. The dog smelled like piss, I didn't want to let him in the house and I didn't want to keep mopping that fucking floor every day. Even when we've been home for 4-5 hours and after the dog would be inside for that whole time, he'd piss. Example: this weekend, the roommie took the dog outside for about 20 minutes. We'd been home all day, with the dog inside the house. After opening the door, the dog ran inside, jumped on me and the couch, proceeded to piss on me, the couch, and the floor... a lot of piss. All this happened before my roommate was able to shut the door behind him. Four times a day it's nothing but piss on me and/or the floor.

Told my roommate I couldn't let the dog keep laying/slipping in his piss, and that it wasn't right. Any dog shouldn't be in those conditions. Mopped the floors and gave the dog a bath on Saturday, and told him that I wanted to move the dog's kennel inside so we could keep it on track with the kennel training, since the "porch toilet" obviously wasn't working. I got home from work today, which was the first day letting him stay home since we decided to keep him in the kennel, clean and piss-less.

I opened the door, saw the TV on, and the dog sitting right in front of the door wagging his tail. I freaked out (why the hell was that dog not in his kennel?), threw my laptop and a bag on the couch, and bolted for the back door to let him out before pissing on me or the carpet. The roommate's supposed to work a 12 hour day today, he's not home... and he left at 9am. I walked back inside, turned on the lights, and saw everything on the floor. Shoes scattered throughout the floor, bills/coasters/gloves/shoes/toilet paper/bags/hat/laptop power supply(hope he shocked himself)/[HEADPHONES ] chewed up. Nothing on the table. Piss everywhere. I was pissed. I'm still pissed. The dog knows it, too.

I look at the kennel, and it's still "shut." It's a wire-frame POS that the dog obviously shimmied his way through. I got a wire hanger and bent it around the kennel enough to keep him in... (not finished yet, but he and I both know he's not leaving the kennel without my permission). I finally let him inside, to go straight for the kennel (of course) and he blazes past me and runs for the couch. I'm sitting at the kennel calling his name, and he's still a little scared of me. So I finally get up to bring him to the kennel, and notice he's sitting (standing?) on my laptop. I start to run for him, and he starts pissing on it. Of course.

Living room's cleaned up. Bathroom's cleaned up. Kitchen's been cleaned up. Laptop's cleaned up... luckily it was closed and nothing seeped inside. Piss has been kneaded out of the carpet as best as I can. Dog's sitting in the kennel. Now I get to do laundry and dishes. And fume over how shitty a day can get in just a 10 minute period.

 im assuming his owner hasn't trained him? rotweilers are supposed to be very good dogs/easy to train, is ther something wrong with the dog, is he afraid of pissing outside?? this is why i own a cat, they go in the litter box, no questions asked, easy clean up..

#341213Post 17 of 55

damn puppies. this isnt a good story for me since i agreed to get a puppy with my girlfriend, should we come across some free ones. been a while since i had a new dog, and i forget the full time responsibility of raising one and house training. sounds fun til you come home to chewed cables and documents or cd's.
 im assuming his owner hasn't trained him? rotweilers are supposed to be very good dogs/easy to train, is ther something wrong with the dog, is he afraid of pissing outside??
I think the roommie is afraid to punish him... doesn't want to spank him/etc. the only way they'll learn is by conditioning them with bad experiences. like the biting, for example; I almost have the dog done with that, because I curl the lip under it's teeth every time it bites. the dog's not bad, I just don't think it's ever been forced to "learn" :not me:
Get your OT straightened out?
almost man. It'll be under control tomorrow or Wednesday... I went on a small shopping spree today. Probably buying a dig camera and PS2 later this month too
sorry dude, I got a little bored reading your story, I guess Ill read it some other time.
No worries, I wasn't talking to you anyways

#341228Post 20 of 55

that was long...tell the owner to train the fucking dog

#341233Post 21 of 55
harming an animal over owner neglect is blatant fucking ignorance
it's not that he's been neglected... it's a pretty dog that's mostly normal. It just hasn't learned not to piss in the house. I think he knows it's bad, he just doesn't understand why grass and carpet is different, I guess. The roommate just treats him too good, and doesn't want to punish it when it deserves it. I feel bad making it stay in a kennel when it's bad, or whatever I do, but the dog needs to learn right from wrong somehow. It won't learn unless we reinforce both good and bad actions, and the roomie only reinforces good ones... he doesn't do anything about the bad

#341234Post 22 of 55

that sucks! I have 4 large piss stains on my carpet where a previous roommate's dogs habitually pissed. I've steam cleaned them a couple of times, but they always eventually resurface. That stuff just never comes out entirely. Hope your carpet is piss colored to begin with

#341238Post 23 of 55

that sucks... furtunatly my dogs are real good ... *knocking on wood

"treats" and "rolled up newspapers" does no good for anyone.. when he pisses and poops in the house say very loudley and madly "bad dog" right after he eats take him outside , stay with him until he goes, after he goes OUTSIDE give him tons of attention and maybe a treat ( treats should be used for special occasion) otherwise he'll always depend on them..

#341308Post 26 of 55

wow, that is kind of crazy and irresponsible of the new roommate to just ignore the problem... I would be livid!

#341314Post 27 of 55

My friend owns 2 big mutha suckin rothwielers...its all about the power cause if u dont train them from the beginning they will never learn...everytime the dog pisses or shits...rub his face in it for a good minute or so...this works..

also if the dog pisses in the house..smack it or hit it with something...those dogs are mean suckers and even from an early age they can take alot..

#341322Post 28 of 55

A nasty tap on the nose helps, no smacking involved. A dog's nose is really sensitive, so you don't need to do it really hard; just use the tips of your fingers. He'll know he's been a bad dog.

#341330Post 29 of 55

my friend had a rotweiler. he had to get rid of it for the same reason pickle. the dog did the same shit AND just give it time. even if you get that bitch potty-trained, those dogs smell like shit when they get bigger. definitely meant to be an outdoor dog.

That DOESN'T work man. That doesn't work AT ALL. That's not the way to raise your dog. Just spend TIME when the dog is a pup. Will he do the same with his children? I don't think so. If you don't have the time to raise a dog, then don't buy one. Or buy a dog that is 1 year old.

^ animals and humans are different i don't care what anyone says...a smack even a hard one isn't gonna hurt a roth...there strong dogs and they can take it....

yeah there defo outside dogs...there purpose really is to protect which my mates dogs do...he has a goat farm...i pity people who break into it..

#341361Post 32 of 55
a smack even a hard one isn't gonna hurt a roth...there strong dogs and they can take it....

A dog will NEVER forget you smacked him. Never! It's just not right. Sooner or later it'll turn against you. He/She maybe will not bite but won't show the reaction you want because the dog will get afraid of you. There are other ways to raise a dog.

#341364Post 33 of 55

Actually, the best way still seems to be to reward the right behaviour and ignore the bad behaviour.

doesn't mean you ignore a dog pissing all over in the house, but rewarding him when he did his poopoo outside. That way he'll learn the good way faster. Common knowledge among trainers, my uncle used to be one...

#341367Post 34 of 55

Psy...as Yao said rewarding the dog when he does a shit outside is a good thing...but if hes bad i think simple shouting does'nt work all the time....maybe with a small dog but not with a roth..

i mean i was smacked when i was younger or hit with a wooden spoon on the hand....everytime i saw the wooden spoon coming out i knew i did something bad and wouldnt repeat it.. i know this practise isn't cool anymore and i would'nt ever hit a kid...but in saying that its a provin way to learn discipline.

same with my mates 2 roths...his dad smacked them a couple of times with a wooden bat..and now everytime they see it they back off..

roths are too dangerous when there older not to be trained cause they could easily kill a human..but they would never go for him as he is the 'master'.

#341371Post 35 of 55

You could be right in some way, Big. Although I bought a book about Jack Russells for my gf and they stated that when your dog pisses inside the house, and you come home a few hours later the dog won't remember that he did something wrong. If you then grab your dog and rub him through his piss he won't understand a thing of what you want to achieve. He will only get afraid of YOU and not of doing something wrong inside the house.

-Psynce-

#341374Post 36 of 55

True, a dog doesn't remember anything he did from a few hours ago...he's mainly living in the present.

Punishment isn't totally bad, but really smacking a dog is making it afraid. Even with a roth, that's wrong: eventually when it's afraid, that is exactly when it will bite! Punishment shouldn't be about the control, it's about letting the dog know that it did something wrong. That's all there is to it.

#341375Post 37 of 55

^^ So true Yao. So true...

-Psynce-

#341377Post 38 of 55

well guys maybe im wrong about the whole shit thing but its wrong for u too compare 2 roths to 2 small dogs that couldnt harm a fly..

my friend has had these to 2 fully grown roths for years...there is a common trust and understanding between them both its not love but respect for each other....u must put fear into dogs of there size...for instance when we go out walking in the forests sometimes u cant put them on leads..

so they run ahead and if theres other people around we have to shout at the dogs to get back...and he raises his bat to signal them to heel...its very hard to train dogs that should never have been trained in the first place thats all im sayin..

#341379Post 39 of 55

^^ It's obvious that you don't smack a Jack Russell with the same amount of power as you smack a Rottweiler. Thing is that the dog will get afraid of you. That's in the best case. The worst case is if the dog will turn himself against you.

Why do you think that pitbulls/american staffords/... can be so agressive? It's all about the owner....

-Psynce-

#341386Post 40 of 55

yeah i take in what ur saying in...without them fearing u alittle bit , big and nasty dogs won't have any respect for you.

well his dogs haven't turnen on him yet so...well i guess every dog is different...
