It revolutionized the way music could be consumed, ushering in the new era of portable pop, but the SONY cassette Walkman is finally calling it a day after 30 years in the market.

SONY has discontinued the gadget after shipping out its last shipment of five models. Once these shipments have been bought out, new cassette Walkmans won’t be available from SONY.

The Walkman arrived in Japan in 1979 and proved a massive success, selling some 220 million units in total. It pushed music to the masses, letting people enjoy their music privately outside of their homes, and was the prototype for its digital cousin, the iPod, which coincidentally celebrated its ninth birthday two days ago.

The Walkman is dead, long live the Walkman indeed.

Re: RIP Walkman

The one in the pic looks exactly like the one my mom had/has.... used to love playing with the recording feature.

It truly revolutionized the way we heard our music.

Re: RIP Walkman

I used to own this bad boy right here! clear as fuck, dope ass bassline the headphones use to give out, super clear sound, loooved it!!!.

I purchased it from my uncle for $60 when I was about 12..

It finally wore out, spilled shit on it, got sand in it.. and the final blow.. my brothers little friend stepped on the headphones and killed it..ironically I believe he was Japanese! :(

"The interesting story behind this cassette player is that it is named after a concert hall in Japan named the BudoKan. it was designed by Sony to, when used with the original supplied Boodo Khan headphones, to replicate the acoustics of that famous concert hall. If you do a search on google or Ebay for the term Budo Kan, you'll find that alot of famous artist have released live performance albums performed at the Budo Kan concert hall. I had the headphones for a while but never really did any serious listening with them. They had some good wear done to them over the years so I cannot vouch Sony's design claim nor have I ever been to this famous concert hall. One of the few cassette players I will never sell. Not as solidly built as the DD-9, but one hell of nice looking player none the less. Expect to pay in the 100 to 200 dollar range on Ebay for one of these. The cat's not quite out of the bag on this one, so, maybe you'll find a deal on one."

Next thing from Apple is a brain implant with DRM I heard. If you steal, you suffer. I remember my first Walkman (not from Sony) was fucking heavy and used batteries like there is no tomorrow lol. But I loved to be able to listen to Music everywhere. So all Hail to the Walkman!
