Re: [ms] DJ Database

Apart from the music it collects info and galleris of dj's, many artists have it as a link on their FB or Myspace. But I do agree it could be seen as a competitor. We could add extra pics at the bottom of the page.

It was just an idea, it is very similar to what you're trying to do and could take users away from here. Adding a new field is no big deal if you do it in batch -collecting the uri, that I can do.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

I wanted to tie in a ms-based gallery to DJDB eventually, either via manual uploads or tags from member albums. I guess I'm ok with RA and last.fm if you're prepared to collect it :)

bando, are you on google talk/msn/aol/yahoo? pm me your name on them if you are

Re: [ms] DJ Database

No, I haven't had any of those installed in years, I'm on Facebook, though http://www.facebook.com/SbandoBoy.

I have no say about it, but isn't RA a direct competitor of sorts? I'm not sure. Users check out RA's database, they might think "why bother with ms".

Filling in the last.fm fields manually will take some time, it would be easier to import the entries from a file,

for instance http://www.last.fm/music/Way+Out+West - http://www.last.fm/music/Nick+Warren

last:artist_ID

=

last:Nick+Warren last:Way+Out+West

etc.

Now I have to wait for my connection to be fixed, tho. It takes me 5 minutes to load this page.

MS has no competitors! It competes with itself :)

Connection is back to normal, we can start adding the new fields, if you want.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

can we start like a rating tool for posted sets, then we can filter them out and stuff?

#1426484Post 170 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

At the top of every thread is "Rate this thread" :)

Re: [ms] DJ Database

but theres no way to filter by top rated or most talked about??

#1426821Post 172 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

My idea is to create static (not generated on the spot) listings of all ms sets, at least for djs I like (Jody, Digweed, Timewriter). Whether Adam is willing to integrate those in the database or not, I don't know, it's up to the ms Bosses.

You click on pencil next to the icons, as the creator you should see it.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

Do you guys think it would be possible to add a label database too? I just started my own label last month and looking to spread the word. I'm sure it would be a great resource for [ms]'ers to learn about new labels that they haven't heard of before.

Great! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to make the topic its own thread so more people can see the suggestion.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

Even though I had to stop working on the db because of health issues, at present we're adding RA and last.fm fields to the existing entries. I mentioned to Picklez that I had collected quite a few links to labels and agencies sites and he said that eventually he wants to add those too.

#1435665Post 181 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

I'm going to be candid here, so I hope I don't come off as blunt or rude since it's not my intent. My original plan was to eventually add labels and be able to tag our DB artists to labels. As much as I'd love to repeat that process for the labels I first need to see more people populating our current DJ Database. I hate to say it, but there's no way I'm going to create a second database when our current DJ DB is only being populated by about four people. I need to be confident that most members out there will take the five minutes to submit a new artist to the DB if they create a thread for an artist that doesn't exist... it's just not happening.

If I had ~20 committed volunteers who were devoting at least one hour per day submitting DJs for four months, I'd start working on the label DB. Otherwise, I'm not going to spend another ~3-4 hours/day for four months to create a second database that will ultimately be my responsibility to populate and maintain along with the first one.
Apart from the current forced hiatus, I never gave up on the project, I still update new posts (50% of which comes with no tag), so you're definitely not alone.

#1435673Post 183 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

Ok, I'll post my bookmarks of Agencies and Labels as "tools" for other users to add new entries.

#1435828Post 184 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

bando, I'm not saying it's all me here, you're definitely a stakeholder to the project :) I just don't want this to be an effort by a few people, but instead a group effort. If we want to see this place grow, we all need to put a little bit of work into it. If only 300 of us put ten DJs into it over the next month, we'd have every DJ you could think of in there and I'd be willing to do the label DB :)

#1435919Post 185 of 352

Re: [ms] DJ Database

I've expressed my doubts before, but I think that once the updates are added, inputs or not, the database will stay as a resource unique to MS. Also, I'm a Web worker myself, I stopped caring about "feedback" 10 years ago, the only feedback I need is in the form of a check (in my case). A nice database, next to the Kiss 100 collection and P&R, is an asset.

What I see is that a bunch of people are still missing the point of having MS's mixes mapped out and easier to find, but that might change, in time and with patience. I still think that we should have two listings, one for ten most recent threads, one for the mixes.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

I've spent about 4 hours working on DJDB today... I did a bunch of stuff related to error checking/displaying, I fixed a couple other bugs that nobody has probably noticed, etc.

I made a pretty big addition today, too--I added RSS support for your subscribed artists feed!

Subscribe to only your favorite DJs with our DJ Database!

 • Subscribe to some artists in our DJ Database
 • Grab your personalized RSS URL from the Artists Subscriptions section of your [ms] homepage.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

:)

sbando, sorry for the delay here. I just separated Downloads vs Discussions... anything that's in P&R shows up in the Downloads section, and everything else will show up in Discussions. The Subscriptions on the main page still shows a combination of both. See an example on Digweed's profile:

Re: [ms] DJ Database

On the artist list, I had a list showing the Top 10 Artists based on member subscriptions. I just randomized that list to show different stats, and now it will 50% of the time show you the most recent artist submissions.

Re: [ms] DJ Database

I just finished writing some new code that lets you view another member's favorite artists from their profile page. If you look on someone's profile, you should see a sample of their favorite artists on the left side of the screen under their profile information.

You can see an example on my profile: http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/member.php?168-picklemonkey

I also cleaned up the user profile pages a bit more to look more uniform
