Wow. How do you like those speakers? Worth the $$??

Very nice set up. ;)

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

They're the first pair of monitors I've owned so I don't have long term comparison with anything else, but I really like them. Did a lot of A-Bing before I bought them and I thought they sounded great for the money. To me they sounded significantly better than the KRK or M-audio(don't mean to talk trash:p) stuff that I was looking at in the sub $1000 range, but not quite as good as the more professional grade stuff in the $2000 range, so I thought it was a good middle ground. I've been happy with them.

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Your 106 looks fuckin brand new, how come? (is there a smiley for jealous?)

and your 101 looks nothing like the one i used to have. Is the U.S. model different?

#1396447Post 6 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

The 106 is in very good condition. I have started using it a bit recently but prior to that it hadn't been touched for quite a few years. Check my other thread here for more info: http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/showthread.php?83965-my-girlfriend-had-these-in-her-basement...

I have realized that the 101 isn't in the above picture... I believe you're referring to my Edirol PCR MIDI controller... which is just about the same size and shape as the 101, but with all the knobs and buttons. Mine is just the standard gray color.

Cool. Yeah, my M-Audio's are good for mids and highs but the low end on them isn't the best. I mean, they are only 4 inch... Looking to get new monitors soon.

#1396699Post 8 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Word. Don't mean to be talking trash on your speakers, but I thought all the M-Audio stuff I listened to back to back with other products sounded really dull. There was a lot of bass on the models with 8" LF drivers but compared to everything else the mids were muffled and the tops were not there when compared to a similar model on another brand. For the money I thought the KRK stuff was great. They had some pretty good sound for not so much money. All in all when it comes to monitors, you get what you pay for, as is the case for many other things. But please take my input with a grain of sand because I am by no means a pro or even experienced, I'm just going by my ears.

#1401724Post 9 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Nah. My speakers really aren't the best for what I'm trying to use them for.

They make really nice desktop speakers for casual music listening. Gonna give them to my girlfriend once I buy a nice pair. :)

#1401799Post 10 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Word. I'd say get what you can afford. I've got friends producing tracks for label release on not-so-expensive monitors. I'd say it's more about what you do with them if you know your speakers well.

I think it's a good thing to just listen to all your music on a daily basis using your monitors so that you form an idea of what most other music sounds like on them, so you're able to adjust your own music correspondingly.

Back to the studio, I'm in the process of planning a move of all my gear into a basement room which I plan to do some sound treatment on. Proper listening in a treated environment versus a bedroom or whatever is really nice, especially when you're at an amateur level and doing the finalizing of all your tracks on your own.

#1401888Post 11 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

^True. The room is treated, but my monitors don't translate very well. Gonna bounce my unfinished track to cd and listen in the car. Hopefully, this will help with knowing what my speakers are lacking, and what I need to do to mitigate that during mixing.

#1401930Post 12 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Exactly. I've had my monitors for about 9 or 10 months now and I'm starting to get a good idea of what frequency ranges come out really clear but not so much on your average computer speaker or whatever.

It's good to have a set of 'shit cans' as they're commonly referred to in studios to listen on, something like your average person's speakers they have plugged into their computer. I'll bounce a mix and listen on my ipod earbuds, sennhesier headphones, plug it in the car and also on my girlfriends altec lansing computer speakers. I try to shoot for an acceptable mix on shitty speakers or ear buds, and hopefully it'll sound good on a proper system.

^ nice ones!!! I´m working in the design of my new home studio, cause I moved some months ago. I finished painting the walls. I have the equipment, but I´m waiting for some info to make some acoustic treatment. I´ll post pictures when I end. Anyways, it´ll be nothing more than a home studio. The room is big, I like that, it´s about 4mts x 4 mts

Great stuff. My 106 is a bit poorly these days electronically, think it needs new chip??

Problems began after it went a long time completely unused so my advice is turn it on and use it often

Have you tried cleaning all the faders and pots with compressed air and contact cleaner/lube ?

If not they will corrode and get dirty and not function correctly and make crackling dirty sounds.

Actually need to clean mine out as well....

There's an article in Future Music about doing exactly that... in an issue about a year ago. Check it out.

#1419174Post 17 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Ah cheers i will

it's not so much fader crackle or noise, it's more that the brain of the thing has somehow become a little unpredictable.

Will still give it a strip down and clean soon enough anyways, can't hurt eh??

Great machine though!!

cheers

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

^ here in Argentina lives a technician that he works only with analog synths. He´s a genious here, every artist, including big bands (even international bands) send their synths to him for repairing or for maintenance. He is always working on Juno series, he knows every synth, every model of every brand, and he works very good. I´m not telling you to send him the keyboard, but maybe you can describe the problem by mail, and he can guide you. And if you need any replacement part, he can send it to you (he sells parts). I talked to him several times, he knows a lot. His homepage is http://www.sintetizadores.com.ar/ there you can find his mail if you want to ask something. His name is Hernan

Such a gear head...

Got a unit custom made. Takes up a good bit of the room but nice layout!

Still yet to finish a track sadly... Have enough bits of songs to do a full live set with Ableton however

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

^ nice customized desk!!! I finally finished the acoustic treatment of my home studio. I´m waiting for the desk to arrive, so I can plug my hardware. I just connected my computer, soundcard and monitors to work on the HC Teleport contest (I don´t know if I can make it on time). I´ll post here pics of how I built the acoustics when I get home... maybe next week I have all working out and plugged, and update pics.

#1427289Post 22 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

I uploaded some pics of the acoustic work I did here at home, in my small studio... just for hobby, I love sound and music, and I make some mixes. As I said, there's no desk nor equipment. Just acoustic treatment, my computer and monitors. If any of you is interested in building some acoustic gear for your place, I can show you the pics I took while I built them. It's not so difficult, and not expensive at all. I studied acoustics and read lots of info before, I can give you some info if you want to, just PM me. I know there are lot of Proffesional and very expensive things you can do to your studio, but if you are not "pro" and just want a better audio in your place, what I did is perfect. just some bass traps (different kinds) and some absorption in the right places. Hope you like it! my next step is to add some sound diffusion on the rear walls and the ceiling... I created an album at MS, here is the link http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/album.php?albumid=401

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Looks good, would love to hear the sound. Was thinking of doing it myself. I would like to soundproof the room as I live in a place where the neightbours complain a lot!

#1427387Post 24 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

that´s the hard part. But if you´re not going to play "loud" instruments inside (like acoustic drums, electric guitars/basses), youdon´t have to do much.. just add some material to the door/window, and the sound absorption inside. For music playback it works very good. You don´t need high sound pressure level for editing/mixing/listening

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Nice work Diegoff. I've been wanting to move my gear into another room and do some sound treatment but I think I'll have to move first. You know you're a sound nerd when you want to move to a new house for the sole reason of getting a place with a better room that could be a studio.

#1428017Post 27 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

^ :) that was me... I moved some months ago, and in the biggest room I thought "this is going to be my studio", while everybody said "this has to be your living room, look at the space and light...".. wtf! it sounds good

#1428141Post 28 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Haha right on!

I used to live in a rather large room that had many cavity like spaces, large walk in closet for example, and also the ceiling was tall and at various angles. When you'd sit in most spaces in the room there was ZERO bass, but when you stood in a few spots you got TONS of bass. It was horrible. Now I'm in a tiny rectangular room barely big enough to have all my gear in, which is exaggerating bass quite a bit. I'd really love to have a nice room with even just a bit of acoustic treatment. I'll have to talk with you regarding treatment once I do get a better spot.

#1428143Post 29 of 48

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

you can use your small room. I've seen many control rooms at professional studios that weren't very big. If you want to record acoustic instruments, that's another story... but for playback, mixing and playing synths, you don't need a big space. Of course, you have to make some acoustic treatment. You can kill the bass that's given back by your room, to start. That's not hard, you don't need to sacrifice lot of space, and it will give a good sound to your room. You'll only need some rock wool (or fiberglass wool), some pieces of wood, some fabric, and time to build the bass traps.

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

Novation looks nice... how do you like it ?

At a glance, it looks like you could benefit from a bit of monitor repositioning. They look a bit close and low. In general it's good to shoot for 3-5' distance and the height putting the middle point between the HF and LF drivers at ear level.

I find that even with lower volumes, my ears get fatigued quickly with the monitors set up too close.

Just a friendly suggestion, if you like it that way, rock on!

its ok, not really that used to it yet as i don't know what it all does ( haven't read the manual yet  )... build quality is surprisingly good

i,ve actually thought about moving the monitors and also making them a bit higher but i think it sounds just fine the way it is just now, i really like the fact that even @ low levels on these things everything is clear as a bell, i can't really get them up loud anyway as i have an 80 year old neighbour  this is why the are so close

Re: Post your studio pictures/setup

To clarify what I meant about the HF/LF driver thing:

If you look at your monitor from the front, put an imaginary point halfway between the tweeter and bass cone on a vertical axis. Try elevating your monitor so that point is even with your ears while in your seated listening position.

I'd definitely put the speaker back another foot or so at least. Try pushing the desk away from the wall and putting the speakers on stands. I got some cheap ones (On Stage stands) for about 60 dollars.
