Just wondered what the [ms] crews experiences are -

You know scene - one of your favourite DJ's is playing at your favourite club. Naturally its probably not even where you live, so you travel for several hours, book tickets to guarantee entry and accomodation, maybe splash out on a pre-set meal (its going to be a long night and you may lose you appetite by the early hours of the morning). Everything is in place and you've looked forward to this for weeks.

Then you get the bad news ... such and such a star DJ couldn't make it or has a last minute bout of influenza (no doubt the booking agents got greedy and had that star name globetrotting for a few extra $$$'s - and the DJ missed the flight 'cause he fell asleep at the gate).

To top things off the no-name/no-talent replacement plays like a bedroom-beginner, doesn't have an ear for a tune and can't work the floor. Your night's turned to shite after all that effort (not to mention the wasted hard earned ??'s you've worked your arse off all week for).

In my case Sander K has been notorious - he didn't turn up at Sankey's, injured his leg playing football in the afternoon at Creamfields, and pulled his night at Pinup (Ibiza) last year (without updating his website or cancelling flyers).

Despitre his reputation I've only missed Sasha once - British Airways strike 2003. I was chatting to him at his legendary Reniassance reappearance in Ibiza later that year and he apologised (and reckoned he'd done everything to try and get there). Give his crew their due, Excession put three of us on his guest list at Tribal Gathering.

So come on - who is notorious ....and which DJ can you depend on that will turn up (Possible Hernan who bases himself in the UK when he plays Europe and Argentina when he plays America ?).

Any working DJ's that are part of [ms] - now is a chance to defend your profession!

In Toronto Carl Cox has cancelled twice within the last 2 years or so...which wasn't too bad because one of the venues you just got your tickets at the door...the other it was a party with richie hawtin and magda ($40.00 a ticket) and sven vath replaced Mr Cox. Would have rather seen Cox but sven filled his spot nicely.

#331841Post 3 of 43

Some friends and I went to see Zabiela in Ann Arbor ,Michigan on a Thursday night, and he did not show. It was not his fault though from what i found out, something to do with the airlines, but i was bummed because i had taken the night off work and we drove an hour to get there. It sucked but shit happens.

They play really well together and often (and this includes magda  ) and they all know how to bounce tunes off each other. Cox on the other hand is a totally different dj than any of them. I'd rather that lineup anyday...though I will say that Coxy's cancelled a few times when I was supposed to go as well. :(

sasha has blown it for me two times.

the first time was @ The Rubb in tampa, Florida. digweed showed up instead so it was an even trade. better even.

second time i planned for 3 months to see sasha here in atlanta (way before moving here), we got into the club only to find out nick warren had replaced him. not an even trade imo. i was devastated. almost cried. the acid made it worse.

 I`ll bet.

Lucky for me this has never happened but i could see the disapointment if it did.

Dave Pearce was doing the opening for my local, and allegedly pulled out 15 minutes before his set.

Jimmy Van M has cancelled in KC two out of the past 3 appearances... basically twice in two years. When he finally showed up, he was playing a bunch of cheesy shit that made the whole thing not even worth seeing.

#331911Post 12 of 43

If you listen to Skinners Kiss set from last year (4-7-03), diggers starts out talking about being sick in minnapolis, and taking a 40 hour train ride from MPSL to NY, thats my no show experience!

#331927Post 13 of 43

dj vibe didn't show up to spirit this past sat, so it was just victor calderone, but it wasn't his fault, something with flights, he was here last time he was scheduled in nyc, they refunded tickets to whoever wanted the refund, i was at sander that night, even though sander was a show, i don't understand why he went on at 3 :?: i could guess, he was at canada the night before, i got to crobar at 11, they weren't letting anyone in the main room, they where still "setting up" maybe his flight was late or something, but it sucks cause the club closes techinaclly at 6,6:30 :?

#331939Post 14 of 43

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

Diggers himself pulled a classic no show in Minneapolis a couple of years back... :|

#331945Post 15 of 43

I had a Sander no show too at Shelter a few years back. Good thing, though, because it forced me to watch a sweet five hour set by Cusick in the basement. Awesome!

JVM has cancelled 4/5 times. Twice in Seattle, once was during the Delta Heavy, another 2 times at a club. Then my g/f was in Vegas one time and asks me to find a club for her and her friends, found out JVM was playing and she shows up there to have him cancel again. Always being told he's sick too :|

#331965Post 17 of 43

yeah! That's what I heard every time, too... and one of them was for his Delta Heavy appearance. Fuctked up.

#331971Post 18 of 43

I guess I've gotten lucky so far. But I've also never had dj's like Sasha and Digweed come through here. They did in 2002 but I missed it on account I was to visit my mum in virginia.

I hope this year makes dj's want to show up more and on time for their sets. Eventually the fans are going to destroy their livelyhood by putting an end to their shit.

#331974Post 19 of 43

terry mullan is notorious for that shit... tried to see him twice and he didn't show. he made up for it tho when he actually showed up for the party i threw with him headlining so... =)

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

here in boston carl cox was supposed to play for the anniversary party for avalon.but he no showed.im not sure who it was that replaced him.Good thing was that he wrote an apology on his website saying he would make up the date.another time he was supposed to be here he no showed.found out later he canceled his whole tour in the states. One last no-show was tall paul.he canceled about 2 days ahead of time.So the club replaced him with 2 amazing local dj's Eli Wilkie and Joe Mama. They tore the place apart. had the crowd grooving all night.

#332006Post 21 of 43

#332021Post 22 of 43

that shit happened so many times around here in mexico that i cant even recall the parties they have cancelled. (im talking about Sasha, digweed and the others)

#332068Post 23 of 43

Sander K dumped us at Kristal in November. Of course thanks to the greedy mofo's that were supposed to bring him we only found out about this at 2 AM in the morning when his warm up DJ ended his set (which was awesome) and played a tune that was so main settish. We got out and asked the booking agents who told us he announced at 11 PM he wasn't coming due to his gf having a baby... or something. WTF? 11 pm? I still think Sander announced way earlier. The night turned out to crap. NEVER go to a guy named Dan Sanders when he is doing a main set. I mean it.

#332102Post 24 of 43

tenglia vs cox II was going to happen last year, but cox got sick

#332181Post 25 of 43

Cox has back out a couple of times when I went to go see him. Once at DEMF in 2002 and then this yr at club bleu in detroit. Richie has also screwed me over once also. Diggers and sasha don't really play around the ohio/michigan are much. If I want to go see them I most likely have to go to chicago which is a 4-6 hr drive depending on traffic.

#332268Post 26 of 43

Glad to hear I made the right call ;)

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

First time I was going to see Sasha(97-98) at Firestone in Orlando he was a no show. Very Disappointed because of the way they did it. Jimmy Van M was opening and somebody came over the speakers and said Sasha couldn?t make for some stupid ass reason. So Jimmy continued to play the rest of the night and he f*cking tore that place apart. AMAZING SET!!! He later rescheduled about a month later and as always he didnt disappoint.

#332308Post 28 of 43

Here in Peru, Donald Glaude didn't shows up two or three times, Sandra Collins do the same and I don't remember so well but a there's one or two more shows where occurs the same problem, more than one because the dj miss the flight and the others because they miss his passports. They have to be more carefully with that.

#332571Post 29 of 43

sander got his records stolen one evening prior to a show at shelter in nyc... but we had a grand old time with mr cusick in the basement anyhow...

#332584Post 30 of 43
terry mullan is notorious for that shit... tried to see him twice and he didn't show. he made up for it tho when he actually showed up for the party i threw with him headlining so... =)
thats no joke

#332593Post 31 of 43

the worst is when the club knows flights are all screwed & the person will be a no show but still take your money at the door without batting an eye or telling a secret... that happened here about 8 months ago with digweed.. he had some jacked up flights & the club tried to sneak a 3.5 hr DFUSE set, thinking noone would notice.

#332605Post 32 of 43

That's a win win situation for the club -

(1.) a reduced fee for the stand-in DJ. (2.) a killin on money from the door.

not to mention

(3.) extra booze sales from punters drowning their sorrows.

plus

(4.) the better the DJ and set ... the less chance of you hitting the bar .. no-one wants top get a round of drinks in when an amazing tune's just been dropped. Shite music = more bar takings as you try to make the best out of a bad situation.

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

Yep, Sasha was a no show here a few years ago. Fortunately Digweed filled his spot.

#332664Post 34 of 43

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

Coxy cancelled his US tour last year due to illness. Other than that, I've been very fortunate...

#332673Post 35 of 43

Re: The dreaded DJ "No Show"

Sasha didn't make it to WMC 2001 because of his ear drum/car accident. Digweed played by himself and tore it up. One of the best sets I've seen him or anyone play.

#332679Post 36 of 43

My story is a little different.

In DC, there is a new club called Fur, a 21+ venue. Well, opening night, they let people 18+ into the door for 1 night only, and who was playing there?

PAUL VAN DYK!

I ordered my tickets online for $35 and got a bunch of friends to do the same, and then we all pregamed and drove up to DC(20 minute drive). We got to Fur, and the line was fucking long. If you ordered tickets online, you had to wait in like a 40 minute line and pick your name off a list to claim a little paper ticket. THEN, you had to wait in a mile-long line in order to get through the front door. It was like 30 degrees outside(fahrenheit), and my friends and I got into the back of the line. About 30 minutes into the wait, PVD had already started his set, and we hadn't moved. We were all super pissed, but decided that if we got somewhat close to the front in 30 minutes we would still see most of the set. 30 more minutes in the blistering cold, we had moved MAYBE 5 feet. We said 'Fuck Fur' and left, only to get fucking stoned as to forget the night. The next day I got an email from fur saying a bunch of shit about how they were sorry and understaffed. Everyone had finally gotten in with about 30 minutes left in the set.

They didn't credit back my 35 fucking dollars, but they said they'd give me free tickets to Marco V next week.

TOO FUCKING BAD IT WAS 18+ OPENING NIGHT ONLY. I COULDN'T EVEN GET IN HAD I CLAIMED MY TICKETS!

Fuck Fur.

Sander K did a no-show here in Australia recently ... surprise, surprise!

Around the time of SARS there were a whole tonne of last minute cancellations. Another of Sasha who was booked and then pulled out to "work on Involver" which was conveniently timed with WMC.

I suppose we're luckier than most areas, simply because it takes so much longer to get to Asia for most of the headliners - meaning they can't "be sick" at the drop of a hat.

Props to Hybrid. Their tour schedule was nuts when they were here a few months back - they played for nearly 5 hours on Friday night, hammered themselves on the naughties all Saturday daytime, went to another city and played another extended gig on Saturday night, hammered themselves through til Sunday morning, went to another city then played a Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening gig as well.

Now that's how you do it. :)

#332704Post 38 of 43

I can't tell you how many times Jimmy Van M has backed out of a gig I was planning on seeing. Now I just assume he'll not show. He's the biggest dissapointment in electronic music right now. Where's his follow up album, or recent mixes? when's the last time he dropped a kick ass set in a major venue? What's his deal???? He used to know how to work the floor!

#332886Post 39 of 43

^ agreed. I don't understand how he pulled that Bedrock CD1 out of his ass, because it's nothing like anything else related to his name

Was that the one they were to have on July 3rd. I was in NYC that week and wished to myself that I could've been there to see that, but by the time that went on I was back here in dreary old Ohio.
