Michael Specter: The danger of science denial

Vaccine-autism claims, "Frankenfood" bans, the herbal cure craze: All point to the public's growing fear (and, often, outright denial) of science and reason, says Michael Specter. He warns the trend spells disaster for human progress.

Without pointing too many fingers at runningman for his ongoing anti-vaccine rhetoric, I will admit I've bought into the supplements and organic food consumption populace.

Re: fao runningman

I have always thought/felt that way our bodies, when kept healthy, are typically mor than capable of healing itself.. pumping our bodies full of the whatever is the flavour of the week drug/vaccine/"cure" with hundreds of side effects, is nothing more the fda and gov't making money off of society's ignorance

^ahh gotcha, understood...

...gonna watch the speech?

#1361096Post 7 of 32

Re: fao runningman

without having watched the speech because it is kinda long and i'm at work, i will say this and it may be off the subject...

scientists are lying and manipulating data more than ever to show results they want us to see whether its true or not true. with that being said, why would we want to believe science when the scientists credibility is in the shitter? (sorry if that was off topic)

Re: fao runningman

It's funny he said "going back before the enlightenment" just after he shows world hunger is at its highest rate.

One shot isn't what the autism vaccine links are talking about. It is that there are too many shots too soon. Mercury injected directly into the blood stream bypassing you liver and kidneys is a bad idea. It causes neurological diseases (proven).

Jenny McCarthy doesn't say vaccines are bad, she says make good vaccines without mercury and Thimerosol and she will be pro vaccines. This guy is a spinner.. But that should be obvious because he works for The New Yorker.

This guy is a great liar. Pro placebo.... This guy seems to be the new spokesman for Codex Alimentarius.

Natural is bad and synthetic is good.

I urge everyone to watch "Crude" I posted it in the politics section. If you want to see how "chief of environmental studies" and people of that nature and how they will look you dead in the eye and lie to you. And also try to manipulate the science.

Re: fao runningman

"scientists" is not a corporation, which is part of his argument... I think there's a lot that can be taken away from this speech....and "urge" people to watch it at least before commenting.

ffs:)

Florida this guy is a propagandist. He isn't a scientist. He is a Staff writer at The New Yorker.

Re: fao runningman

This TED media outlet seems to be a very big machine for the propagandists..

Bill Gates knows software and talks fact about environment? Michale Specter Knows Propaganda talks about Big Pharma.

What next Gerorge Bush talking about Peace?

Re: fao runningman

I was actually more interested in heightening the level of discourse about what the speaker refers to as the colonialism of food, and vaccines for countries that still experience high death rates from not receiving proper vaccines for polio or small pox...

I look forward to hearing from someone who has taken 10 minutes out of their day to really listen to the whole argument being made, and not responding to sound bites... or giving their knee-jerk response... to what they assume the speaker is getting at after watching the first 5 minutes...

Re: fao runningman

People can say whatever they want about vaccines link to autism. I watched my "normal" son grow up and after his vaccines start to decline. He got a bad rash, fever, and a week later was not the same child. Few months later was diagnosed with autism. We have dealt with MANY parents who all have similar stories. I know there are many other factors involved but fuck that man. We have spread out my younger daughter's shots over last 2 years and have had many heated discussions with her pediatrician. Be careful is all I say to people. The risk and outcome can be life changing for your child and family.

Re: fao runningman

What do you want to talk about, that some vaccines are good? Sure some are good. But don't give them 20-30 vaccines when they are fresh out of the womb.

#1361181Post 20 of 32

Re: fao runningman

coleby how many shots did your kid have to get? Did they do them all at once?

#1361182Post 21 of 32

Re: fao runningman

He got the mmr which is 3 shots in one (measles, mumps, and rubella) and another 2 shots. Up to that point he had surpassed all his milestones and then some.

#1361186Post 22 of 32

Re: fao runningman

Do you think I should wait to get my son's MMR vaccine until he is 31/2? I heard that spacing them out and only getting ones that you essesntially need is best.. eg -Polio you don't need unless you are planning on travelling to a country that has Polio outbreaks?

Basically if you were to do it all over again how would you go about doing it because I am going to have to go through it soon?? Did your daughter get the MMR?

Re: fao runningman

I haven't watched that vid yet b/c I'm at work and will check it out when I get home.

This is relevant though, science based medicine:

Just vaccine topics: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?cat=36

MMR + autism: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=2962

#1361211Post 24 of 32

Re: fao runningman

I think there's a risk man and we have done it different with my daughter. She still needs her mmr and she just turned 3. Her doctor (who we really like) tried to force it on us when she was just over a year. There are also very costly options where you can have the mercury removed from the shots. I think with the numbers of children on the autism spectrum increasing significantly every year more people are cautious of it.

#1361214Post 25 of 32

Re: fao runningman

This has a bit of info about that, it states that:

The controversy is about what is causing this rise in diagnoses. There are two basic hypotheses: 1) That the true incidence of autism is rising due to an environmental cause, 2) That the rise in incidence is mostly or completely an artifact of increased surveillance and broadening of the definition of autism.

http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=95

It is a pretty good read.

I watched the speech and it makes some good points, I think the main point (and definitely supported by the comments in this thread) is that:

You are letting your distrust of everything corporate and big government allow you to ignore the fact based science, since you can't trust anything big pharma or anything the government says, then you should ignore all of the evidence and just do what you feel is best. This is not a good thing when the overwhelming majority of people from around the globe who actually have degrees (posing for playboy doesn't make you an expert in the field of medicine) tell you to do this, but since you think they are all in on the con you do that.

#1361249Post 26 of 32

Re: fao runningman

You forgot 3) That all the vaccines combined to early with mercury in them cause neurological diseases and the gov't would never admit to it because it would essentially shut down the vaccine industry. Huge revenues would be lost by Big Pharma and tax revenues off of them. Those revenues on taxes for the gov't are considered GUARANTEED.. They have a set target for every year.

I guess some people just like living in the Fog. It never is black or white with you eh?? It always is a riddle.

Also note doctors saved my life when I was 4 so i am not Anti-Doctor or anti pharmaceuticals. Medicine saved my life and I am greatful but the idea that vaccines are the answer to lifes puzzles is not only wrong it is irresponsible. We as a society are always looking for the "silver bullet" and the "quick fix" vaccines unfortunetly are not this. There are side effects from injecting people with foreign substances and everyone acts differently.

#1361252Post 27 of 32

Re: fao runningman

You forgot that 4) All of the BS that keeps getting regurgitated over and over and over and over and over and over and over (obviously regurgitated from Jenny McCarthy's swill about autism) about mercury and Thimerosal has already been disproven by science. Note I said science (just like the TED talk!), which has nothing to do with government.

You obviously didn't understand my last point at all as you are bringing gov't up again which has nothing to do with the scientific method which was what was being discussed. That is black and white.

#1361257Post 28 of 32

Re: fao runningman

Again this has nothing to do with Jenny McCarthy. She isn't even against vaccines... You really need to do some research. She is against how many they get and how fast. Also they want a clean vaccine.. Is that so wrong??

I am sick of taking you to school on arguments. It is obvious that you just listen to ANYTHING your gov't tells you which makes it laughable..

Have a nice night!!

That, sadly, is the way now, people very rarely read everything . It's one of the things that piss me off about forums  If they are too busy to read, it might be a good idea to be too busy to comment ;) I'm busy today, but it is a subject I'm interested in, so will read tonight and comment accordingly !
