I remember WAY back in the day when I used Audiogalaxy to download my mp3s, I downloaded a bunch of Digweed's Bedrock sets. I put them on my mp3 CD player and did not enjoy them. I was used to that cheesy shit that Paul Oakenfold and Sasha and others were putting out.

Anyways I've come to realize that not only does Oakenfold suck, but Digweed is my favorite DJ. Moreso than Tiesto, who I've seen live. John Digweed wins the prize.

I just felt like saying it, feel free to boot this thread somewhere else if you deem it so.

Re: Johnny Digweed

Classic! Mr. Hindu, better late than never.

Try not to tell your newfound progressive friends that you've been to dj Testicle... :P

Maybe we should open a confession page on this board... I used to like Oakie, but Sander showed me the light (or Diggers or Lee or ....). Sasha saved me btw, but it's a period I don't want to talk about anymore

#329644Post 10 of 63

yeah i also liked oakey with his GU new york, and paul van dyk with seven ways and other world or sort of, but when one of my best friend gave me this GU014 ho my god holy shit, i see the light .....like you....thats was 5 or 6 years ago

#329654Post 11 of 63

I used to love Oakey back in 1998 - his e-mix world tour from 99 was pretty special as some of you wil lagree.I was a bit confused when he started playing the awful records he plays now though.

#329669Post 12 of 63

No shame to confess you used to like Oakenfold. His 99 essential mix world tour was great imo. Let me say ... this was the area when trance was still quality. Since 2000, it has been growing into a hype with mass production so it has gone downwards with the quality. Tiesto is the perfect example of how disgusting trance sounds these days.

But luckily, around 2001-2002, I heard my first kiss show (which I had found on djmixes2k by accident) ... I felt immediately 'home'.

I turned away from the cheese when i heard communicate cd2 back in 2000 and i never looked back

#329951Post 21 of 63

Well I don't consider Tiesto or Oakey to be cheese, per se. I'm more of the mindset that any "techno" on the radio is cheese, like DJ Sammy.

Or Aqua.

Fuck them for ruining the humble institution known as techno.

#329955Post 22 of 63

I can admit to going through something similar. Oakey, Testicle, Fairy Corsten. I loved it all, and then, since I bought all the GU albums any way, I started getting the Nubreed discs. Lawler, Tomeii, and Pappa turned me on to some of them I never appreciated and wondered why the hell I bought them. My least fav GU's I had bought were Sasha and Digweed. But I didn't dislike it, I just didn't listen to it much. Then I bought the NE discs, and started listening more and more. Next came Hernan live with Oakenfold on the Essential Mix, and I have never looked back since. Hernan just blew me away, and his hour was much much better then Oakey. Since then I listen to mostly Progressive.

Oddly enough, I've been making a similar transisition into Tech House. I used to think it was OK, but mostly just boring. Now I love it, not all of it mind you like progressive house, but most of it. Except the only difference here is that I still love prog, just like Tech too.

Re: Johnny Digweed

One of the first tracks I ever heard that got me into electronic music was Schiller - Ruhe (Humate Mix). Talk about a spoiler! Eventually a friend of mine let me borrow Digweeds Northern Exposure cds and Hernan Cattaneo's South America. I used to love the brand of trance Oakenfold & Tiesto but i got out of it after I heard those cds. Looking back on it though Oakenfold played some great trance...

#872280Post 32 of 63

Re: Johnny Digweed

yea, i'm sure most people enjoyed oakenfold at one point even if they are too much of an asshat to admit it now

Re: Johnny Digweed

i'll be goddamned if you didnt name the track thats been bouncin around in my head for a few days now. actually, just today at work i made a mental note (that i later forgot) to listen to that gu again.

this is a little like that alanis morisette song dontchya think?

#872357Post 37 of 63

Re: Johnny Digweed

that tune is always the first one that comes to mind when i think of this gu, i love the vocals and it is mixed in just right. can you belive this mix is almost a decade old already? :what time flies by too quick, i remember the good times that were had the first times i heard this disc and went to check out oakey live because of it with friends. nice to think someone else likes it too

the beginning of disc 2 with the dnb tracks is also fantastic. the talisman and hudson - leaving planet earth and krystal - burning flame tracks are great also.

#872358Post 38 of 63

Re: Johnny Digweed

haha that talisman & hudson track is my other favorite on there. glad to know someone else who appreciates those tunes like i do.

first time i heard these was after a once well known annual festival in FL called Zen. the year was 1998.

still enjoy both discs.
