Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

This was back in late 2002 I do believe where it was just a small chat room, white background that would have your head throbbing for hours after use, and to the side the only downloads there were was the latest digweed Kiss FM and maybe a live set from Danny Howells that would be posted for just a few days. And now it has moved up to the mammoth of the website that it is today.

Respect goes out to all the people who made it what it is today!!

some history

mercuryserver.com started out as a $50 Linux server that provided study notes and lecture presentations for students undergoing Information Systems and Computer Science Degrees. Later mercuryserver provided thousands of application code for such languages as VB, ASP, C++, JAVA, and PHP. Now inspired by developers and programmers that write most of their code while pumping digweed, they are dedicating drive space and bandwidth for the new legacy of mercuryserver. The KISS FM 100 - John Digweed MercuryServer ERA was born A.D. May 3, 2002.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

I think the one I am talking about is before that one, even. This had a small chat room on the web page, no messageboards or anything. It was a white page, with just a few links – the moderators would take down the sets and put new ones every few days. I remember asking one of the moderators to put the danny howells one back up after they had taken it down, they said “sorry cosmo, once they are gone they are gone for good”. Lol. Had a small image of digweeds face I believe, with two primary links to digweeds most recent kiss mix, as well as the guest mix. Maybe one or two recent sets by howells, sasha, digweed or someone like ali from deep dish. I know it was before the version posted above because I remember it transitioning to that one later on. I def remember encryption from the start.

I can't picture the site, but I definitely remember someone saying that about the sets that were posted.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

I remember when MS went down for like 6 whole months...nowhere to be found. I'm sure Kamal remembers that time period. Most of the old members were gone when it came back up.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

I remember those days. I remember finding it while searching for John Digweed when I was at the library that day and finding this wonderful little net spot.

#1354003Post 26 of 40

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

And you had to choose a moderator to sign up with. I agonised over it for ages before realising that it actually didn't matter which one you went for. Sheepie I think I went for. And before this Mercury Server was a room in Audio Galaxy. I didn't know them in those days, but this is what I've heard.

I guess that's how rumors start. We were at no stage gone for half a year. I can't remember how long it took exactly to move from the grey/blue php board to the vbulletin Software but it was surely not half a year without [ms]. Actually I can't remember a time where [ms] was more than a few days offline. But I could be wrong and have maybe displaced this memory lol.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

I dont think it was 6 months, more like 2 weeks. I spent the time arguing with the webhost that they deleted my account without asking (like cunts) and if they could try and recover it. I then spent a week looking for a webhost and we ended up with another one.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

LOL i forgot how far [ms] has come since the beginning. I like those links to the archives of the "original" site. I forgot that you had to get the password then enter it to get the special sets.

Great seeing that again

I remember making MS t-shirts at the sporting goods store i worked at back then lol, we had a press that would do the silk screen stuff. ahh, good times, and tunes! :) So many new names on now which is awesome, this place is still grreat, good to see some of the old names on as well!

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

Yea actually this site started from an audio galaxy site that had a group called kissFM John Digweed or something. And it sprang into this refined site. I still download all things available onthis site and have archives dating back to the first available sets. It is really a large amount of space. I have hard drives full of sets and stuff from this site. I like the new look alot.

Re: Anyone remember the original MercuryServer?

I remember the white page one, somehow stumbled onto it from GU board where some of you OG members posted as well, recall finally getting 50 posts, being stoked to download sets, then boom MS was gone, somehow missed the June 2004 relaunch and got back on in Oct 04, been a blast and the fact V3 or whatever version we are on now happened on my 40th b day was great too, this set up is sick.
