Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Hopefully we get 2 hours of Sasha, and I'm all for Richie but his newer stuff has been boring as hell. Really looking forward to it. Will prolly just get an hour of each though. tong should just throw in the towel imo.

tong's had some good sets, no doubt about that. Any decent one's you'd recommend?

Personally, i dig his e-mix b2b with Dave Seaman (where he starts with Hide U)

This is Pete Tong, I'm interupting this Essential Mix for an hour of shite overhyped poorly mixed garbage.... make some noise! Why Tong has not got the memo on how he weakens every Live E mix he's part of is beyond me, any Tongy fans here care to explain.

Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Hi Si

I am going to this too, if I seem to remember wasnt Yousef was a winner of the Bedroom dj mix in either mixmag or muzik magazine, and how well has he done since well done! Big respect to him he puts on a quality monthly night in his home city and reguarly communicates with his fans via his message board.

Can't really understand the negative comments re Pete Tong he has championed so many dj's acts since 1993 and given them a forum to air their talents whether you like it or not he has probably done more for dance electronic music over the last 17 years or so than anybody else. Period!

Ask most dj's and they will confirm this too, I realise as per listening to him I wouldnt particularly go to see him live although I have in the past, he can mix and people do get on a bandwagon about this, same re Oakie too even in his heyday. As long as punters have a good time lets not get too hung up if its not your bag so be it but lets be positive about it.

lucky bastard.

but seriously, is it just non-stop "oi fuckin' oi" in that place? Because they did that at Sasha's e-mix from there, too.

Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Tong is a legend, end of, and I think he ADDS to the e-mixes with his voiceovers. His voice is THE voice of UK clubbing for people my generation. In fifty years time people will still be moaning about his bloody mixing........who cares!!

Funny enough I ran into Yousef just after he won that. I was going to Home to see Oakenfold and Yousef was in the Sound Republic next door. I didn't know he was a DJ we just got talking. He was with some fit bird in a Marlborough motorcycle jacket. He was playing early at Renaissance at the Cross them late at MOS. He invited me and my friend to catch him later at MOS but we never made it. This photo was taken that night

Most of the time back then. Not as much now, it's had a mega refurb. So ceiling is very high. Back then was a low ceiling so amplified the atmosphere ten fold. 8)

Has anyone actually seen Tong live (other than a BBC or festival event)? I did a few years back and remember him playing some ridiculously sexy prog and techno. Very good set. If only he'd do that on his essential mixes!

Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Press release for this just been released, as if the line up wasnt good enough already looks like there is goin to be another guest on top of these.

Circus presents The 500th Essential Mix DJ Liverpool – Friday 23rd April

As if this weekends extravaganza with John Digweed, Ricardo Villalobos, Yousef and Greg Wilson et al wasnt enough.. It probably doesn’t really get any better, any bigger and any more immense than this:

Liverpool’s leading house night, Circus, one of the most respected and revered sessions in the land, has been asked by Radio 1 to present the 500th DJ Essential Mix.

BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong will host a live broadcast at this event, 1am – 5am, with the monumental 500th DJ to grace the Essential Mix desks. Voted by an expert industry panel the chosen DJ will the revealed on the night in front of a live audience. Along with dance music luminary Pete Tong, Circus resident and promoter Yousef will be present alongside two huge guests: globe-trotting legends Sasha and Richie Hawtin, who makes his mouth-watering debut at The Masque. This is one of Circus’ most inspired lineups and represents just how far the club has evolved; working together with Radio 1 for the world-famous Essential Mix is a huge honour for all involved at the club.

Yousef says that, “After being a avid follower of the world famous Essential Mix since day one and after doing 3 studio mixes myself and even two live hosts myself, now being asked to house the celebration of the 500th Essential Mix is literally the best pat on the back we could of ever wished for at Circus. After 7 years of Circus relentlessly growing and developing and aiming high, it’s good to know that our independent efforts are recognised enough by our peers to be trusted with such and immense accolade. We've been asked by Radio 1 to deliver a line up suited to the 4 hour Live broadcast 500th Essential Mix DJ, in true Circus style, we are doing our up most to go in at a jaw dropping level... we are keeping it all in the smaller venue we use, our original home - The Masque

The loyal Circus followers will literally have not seen anything like what will be happening on April 23rd in Liverpool, ever!”

it's gotta be C-Squared, aka Big C, aka Three Deck Wizard. He's been there since the very beginning.

nm: he's in Germany on that date.

edit could be AvB or PvD. God i hope not.

Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Haven't the Essential Mix show been going on longer than this though?

Just do the math, a show a week, 52 weeks a year, that brings up to roughly 500 shows in 10 years but hasn't it been going since '93?

#1356180Post 38 of 50

Re: Sasha/Hawtin Essential Mix

Oakey maybe?

An hour each for Tong, Sasha & Hawtin then a 2 hour bonanza from the 500th EM guest?

Yeah but on dj's have done more than one. Carl Cox has done loads of them.

And apparently the 500th dj will be someone who hasn't played the club before. A producer/dj who's records get played by lots of different types of dj's maybe??

i actually did catch him just a couple weeks back .. decent set imo .. tech house with a few classics thrown in and my friends and I were joking that he just needed a mic to talk over his mixing and it would just be exactly like his radio shows except that it's 'live'
