Hi all,

Do any of you know of any good resources on sound synthesis? Ive been watching videos on the net but everything seems to aimed towards making trance and electro sounds. I want to create deep house/tech sounds. Also anyting aimed towards logics es2 would be great

thanks

Re: sound synthesis

what kind of sound synthesis are you interested in?

Re: sound synthesis

Yeah, tell us. What kind of sound synthesis are you interested in?

I guess, for Logic ESX24, you could always go the route of Sample Magic, Producer Loops, and Loopmasters...Google those...Most contain one hit samples for synths...Try to stay away from the loops though...Look for good one hit samples and then tweak them to create your own sound..

Hope this helps...I'm new to this too, so if someone has a better idea, please chime in..

Re: sound synthesis

The ES2 is a pretty good soft synth, it can create a pretty nice variety of sounds due to fairly complex modulation routing that can be set up.

The ES2 isn't terribly different from other subtractive synthesizers you'd find elsewhere.

Are you familiar with all it's features?

The Logic manual is quite tedious, but you can learn a lot if you stick with it.

Re: sound synthesis

to strat creating sounds, the best is substractive synthesis. It´s very intuitive and you have strict control in the resulting sound. Additive synthesis is for nerds hehehehe it´s almost maths and engineering. FM synthesis it´s interesting to try and move knobs, but it´s also about maths. Granular synthesis gives very rich sounds, and the chance to use your own sounds as "grains". Reason software have examples of these synths. And if you are looking for something else, try tha software that emulates real equipment (i.e.: Arturia´s minimoog and modular moog, FM7 for FM synthesis). btw, can anyone pm me links for downloading Reason 4 for a Mac?? it would be nice ;) thanx!

Re: sound synthesis

Another one to ask questions and never come back. WHY?

Re: sound synthesis

thanks for all of the responses. Ive been reading about all types of synthesis and i understand the principles of them. Initially subtractive does seem to be the most straight forward starting off with. I've watched lots of videos on the ES2 and I understand the majority of its functions. I think my main difficulty is understanding how to blend sounds to create new ones. I tend to just use trial and error, when I would hope to have an idea how to create a sound by listening to it. Everything I seem to come up with sounds very unatural at the moment.

I've not explored the esx24 yet as i'm trying to get a fundamental understanding of creating sounds from scratch. I know to understand something like this takes time I'm just looking for some advice that would put me in the right direction.

Thanks

Re: sound synthesis

Coming to terms with all the functions you'll find in your average subtractive synthesizer is good, because frankly you'll come across these sorts of functions all across sound production in one form or another.

Being able to make a pretty sound from scratch isn't easy though. It takes time and diligence.

Re: sound synthesis

the only thing i know of where you can create sounds from scratch is MAX and CSound. Both of which are heavily programming oriented.

Re: sound synthesis

is it best then to take the approach of modifying presets. When I say i want to create sounds i mean for example setting up a single sine wave in the es2 with no modulation or filtering and working from there. Jeffrey the abiove sounds interesting and i do have a back in programming.
