Have enjoyed Sake for several years now, but have only recently began really appreciating it for how different it is.

Can anyone recommend some good quality brands from both ends of the price spectrum?

Right now I have a bottle of Momokawa Organic which is inexpensive and tastes good chilled or hot, but can't remember the names of the other bottles I've bought at restaurants...

Re: Sake

I just was eating at a local Japanese restuarant last week and was talking about trying some new sake. I honestly don't know much about it, but was talking about this show that used to be on Mojo HD called Three Sheets and the episode where he went to Japan and drank a bunch of sake. Looks like it is on Hulu if you want to watch for maybe some good brands to try.. :)

Interesting enough I remember them talking about how traditionally in Japan the sake is always cold, as the stuff which you drink warm is supposedly not as smooth, which is why they heat it up. I'd like to know more (as I love booze), but don't know much about what brands are good etc.

Re: Sake

had two carafes last night with some sushi. i just like the cheap hot stuff at japanese restaurants. i've tried going high end with it and it's just lost on me. i've got a bit of a sore throat at the moment too, so a couple hot carafes felt extra awesome last night.

Re: Sake

^sake is like the perfect alcohol for sore throats!

The good stuff has "junmai ginjo" in the name, and I remember now that's what we had...either in a bright blue triangular bottle or light pink...

so good

Re: Sake

When I was living in Japan , i had sake many times ... If anyone wants to experience one of the worst hangovers ever .... get drunk on sake and then you will know

I still like it though and it sure makes a hella good companion after an " ofuro " or eating at a nice sushi restaurant.

Re: Sake

nothing beats fine sushi and sake bombs. goddamn that sounds so good right now; i could really go for a spider roll, some tempura, a few sapporo's or ichibans... ...and loads of warm sake, mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm mmmmmmm

Re: Sake

and for those of you that say "sah-ki", it's "sah-keh"! and it's "kah-lah-o-keh", not "kerry-okie" sorry, pet peeve of mine.

Karatamba is pretty good. Price is mid-range, doesn't taste like chemical like the cheap house sakes (i.e., Ozeki) Otokoyama is also similar and smooth IMO. These are pretty common ones. Not sure about the obscure brands (at least in the US).

Re: Sake

My wife and I recently went to Iron Chef Morimoto's sushi bar in Boca Raton, FL and tried some of his Morimoto 'Ginjo' sake. I'm usually not the biggest fan of cold sake but this stuff was the jam! Extermely smooth and fruity, just like the menu description says.

Here's a link to the restaurant - http://www.bocaresort.com/dining/morimoto.cfm

The 8 side-by-side plasmas behind the bar really set the place off!
