You know, at first i thought this guy was gonna be lame his name being kinda similar to an already very established DJ (Danny Howells vs Derek Howell). So i see some good reviews on progressive sounds and give a listen to the tracks and OMG are they mindblowing! Some people already know this but for those who don't go get his records they're amazing. So write anything you want about this guy in this thread. Best producer at the moment in my opinion along with Kosmas and Benz&MD.

PS. Its kinda refreshing that these are the names being brought up instead of all the top jocks dont you think?

i was quite pleased with his kiss set. hope to catch him spinning at WMC next year. :D

#324807Post 3 of 30

well i don't judge music by the name of the artist. but i agree with you that Derek Howell is one heck of a producer. he just had an EP on Bedrock, which is cracking. and he's one half of Lonestar (with Joshua Michael), who had that incredible tune New Kicks. roll on 2005 for this guy...looking forward to more great stuff.

I agree. Best producer at the moment by far and his new EP confirms that. "Happry to be Sad" is my fave at the moment and "LoneStar - New Kicks" (I think thats him) is one of the all time classics. When Digweed first played New Kicks, it was the main topic on the boards.

#324831Post 6 of 30

First time this guy suprised me was when I heard his Madonna remix in Digweed's Beirut set and it blew me away. Nearly all of his productions are class and the few sets I have from him are quality as well. Good addition in 2004 on my most wanted list. :P

Easily my favorite producer of the year. His Kiss mix is great and his Proton Featured Artist mix is even better. If he is at WMC march I will be right there with you Jib.

#324900Post 10 of 30

I've been a fan of Derek's since I heard some of his work earlier in the year. You can look at any one of the countless threads about "Best Producer/DJ At The Moment" and you will see me mention his name in every one. Top notch tracks coming out of this guy.
So i see some good reviews on progressive sounds and give a listen to the tracks and OMG are they mindblowing!
You can't tell me you haven't heard: Lonestar - "New Kicks"; talk about mindblowing. Also check out some of his other productions under the collab psedonyms of "The Alley Qats", "Pinkbox Special", and "Lonestar".

Re: derek howell appreciation thread

man, i never heard of this guy until i someone on slsk asked me if i could make a cuesheet for his proton radio set. i really didn't have anything going on at the moment, so i did it. while i was making the cuesheet, i periodically had to stop and just listen to the brillance of his set. great tracks, great mixing, great set. :Respect: to derek howell.

#325345Post 13 of 30

best producer in 2004, imho!

#325354Post 14 of 30

his proton set was definately best breaks prog set of the year.......

hands down

#325384Post 15 of 30

This lad has blown me away this year. I must have listend to his Proton set over 100 times. His productions are amazing, his new track Funk It on Fade is so good, its a really happy tune. As for New Kicks, what can you say, just jaw dropping track, its like going back to the days when the sounds were tougher with Goa influences, tremendous tune.

#325387Post 16 of 30

top producer + great dj (i didn't know this side before)

his guest mix fights for my favorite of the year

#328390Post 19 of 30

See now, Americans do have good taste in music and can DJ :D

#328532Post 20 of 30

one of the best of 2004 sureeee

#328660Post 21 of 30

One of the few out and out prog producers around interesting me at the moment. It's fairly standard prog he makes, but fuck me, does he make it to perfection!!! New Kicks still makes me erect during the main breakdown!

#328676Post 22 of 30

I listened his Kiss set in my car on the way back from my parent's house... wasn't really impressed.

#328682Post 23 of 30

One of the standout producers of the year, and with New Kicks getting a full release (complete with new remix) to kick off 2005, plus some new solo material that blows even the Bedrock EP out of the water, we can expect to see Derek really lay the smack down next year, and that's without the remixes he's been doing.

#328684Post 24 of 30

he has some great tracks.. 2004 was a great year for this young producer, and his Bedrock EP was the highest point of his carreer this year so far. Lets see what he can put out for the next year, he's a great producer. While Dj I listened to his Kiss set and It was cool.. Isnt so incredible how people are describing here.. at least IMO!

CHEERS

Re: derek howell appreciation thread

Go Derek! Nice to see another Houston guy(other being Randall Jones) producing Bedrock eps and putting out good Kiss 100 sets.

#331361Post 26 of 30

I second bankheadd opinion, one of the best producers around and he will be around for a long time to come.

His productions are class.

The future of progressive house is safe as long as Derek Howell is around.

Wow, it's about bloody time!

Re: derek howell appreciation thread

Seaman played his tune 'You Wanna Do What' on nye.

Nearly wet myself, it was that good. Up there with New Kicks.

#331626Post 29 of 30

Re: derek howell appreciation thread

I can honestly say all his productions are just top notch. Hands down one of the most up and coming artists imo.
