Whale kills SeaWorld trainer as guests watch The Associated Press Wednesday, February 24, 2010; 4:16 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A trainer at SeaWorld Orlando died Wednesday after a killer whale attacked her in front of a horrified audience. Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall said paramedics were called to the Shamu Stadium at the theme park resort where they found a worker who could not be revived. Park guest Victoria Biniak told WKMG-TV that the trainer had just finished explaining to the audience the show they were about to see. Biniak told the station the whale suddenly came up from the water, grabbed the trainer around the waist and "thrashed her all around" to the point the trainer's shoe fell off. "He was thrashing her around pretty good," Biniak said. "It was violent." The guests were asked to leave and the park was closed. There have been several previous attacks on whale trainers at SeaWorld parks. In Nov. 2006, trainer Kenneth Peters, 39, was bitten and held underwater several times by a 7,000-pound killer whale during a show at SeaWorld's San Diego park. He escaped with a broken foot. The 17-foot-long orca who attacked him was the dominant female of SeaWorld San Diego's seven killer whales. She had attacked Peters two other times, in 1993 and 1999. In 2004, another whale at the company's San Antonio park tried to hit one of the trainers and attempted to bite him. He also escaped. In December, a whale drowned a trainer at a Spanish zoo. At the Orlando SeaWorld, the body of a naked man was found scratched, bruised and draped over a 5-ton orca named Tilikum in July 1999. Daniel Dukes, 27, reportedly made his way past security at SeaWorld, remaining in the park after it had closed. Wearing only his underwear, Dukes either jumped, fell or was pulled into the frigid water of Tilikum's huge tank. An autopsy ruled that he died of hypothermia in the 50-degree water. Dukes' parents filed a lawsuit against the park later that year but later withdrew it.

I mean why didn't it occur to the trainers sooner to shoot the whale in the head?? What a shame,,, a beautiful woman is dead for no good reason.

If someone gets killed who was involved with keeping a whale in slavery so humans can charge an entrance fee for spectators to watch the whale be forced to do tricks for our amusement, then yes, i've got no problem with that whale eating that person.

actually, there is a good reason. she got busy with a whale that is described as 'killer'.

death by nom-noming is in the job description brah.

exactly, same as the circus when elephants charge or lions attack etc.. well, you cage them and beat them daily wtf are they supposed to do.. THEY'RE WILD ANIMALS! human arrogance/ignorance annoys the fuck out of me.. you don't OWN everything on this planet, and this planet and these animals will be here a hell of a lot longer than the human race IMO

i have to side with jenks on this... what the hell do you expect when you take a wild creature and keep it in capivity? it's horrible that woman died, but that is the risk she decided to take. they aren't called killer whales for nothing.

Re: killer whale attacks trainer in front of a horrified audience

maybe they do do a lot of good things, they're not as bad as a rinky dink circus, and i'm hoping they have the sense to realise that this is just something that is going to happen on occasion and not just destroy the animal. Yes he allegedly has killed before, maybe that was a hint to start a transition to put him back into the wild

I mean, Orcas swim 75-100 MILES PER DAY in the wild, keeping them in a tank is disgusting

Re: killer whale attacks trainer in front of a horrified audience

I'm not by any means saying they should close these places down, I know they put money into research and things of a positive nature and rehabbing injured animals etc... and I love the fact, selfishly, that I can see some of these amazing animals close up that I would never get to see in my lifetime, but in a perfect world I'd much rather they were just left alone in their natural habitat

#1339361Post 29 of 65

Re: killer whale attacks trainer in front of a horrified audience

you wanna see them? go see them in THEIR habitat, not ours. had a discussion about this with a friend not long ago. the last time i went to the zoo, which was years ago, it was about 90 degrees outside, and i'm standing there looking at a polar bear sit in a pool of water outdoors trying to stay cool while a zoo keeper throws some kind of fish pieces or meat pieces from a bucket at him so he'll do something for the kids. i left after that, haven't been back since.

i get the research side of zoology, and it's definitely necessary, but putting on a show making wild animals do tricks for spectators is ridiculous. this is the third person the whale has attacked in captivity. take the fking hint people.

Re: killer whale attacks trainer in front of a horrified audience

I can't stand Animal shows of whatever kind and also do not go to Zoos. It's just ridicilous to imprison animals and people pay to watch them in cages or parks. Of course it is sad when people get hurt or killed by animals but it's almost always the initial fault of humans when shit hits the fan.

Well said!!! Its unfortunate more of the human race doesn't think this way. This mentality is what is ruining the earth :(

This is EXACTLY why I don't go to the circus, zoo's or Sea World type facilities. I don't agree with how they treat the animals. They need to be free. And yes having them in a zoo keeps them from poachers, etc. But instead of entrapping them, we need to fight harder to protect them in their habitat. We are slowly destroying everything that is beautiful about the earth and it sickens me.

Was at Sea World Orlando last summer and the whale that did this is f**ing massive trust me, must have been an awful death.

Can't say I agree with some of the viewpoints in this thread to be honest. They may be in captivity but they are still treated well IMO.

do you eat meat? it might not be amusement but you could go without killing animals or your meat. you could also go without enslaving cows for milk and chickens for eggs, etc.

Re: killer whale attacks trainer in front of a horrified audience

I´m on the whale side for sure..

And always is great when a bull kill a mother fucker bullfighter in Spain.. i know is part of the culture but i don´t care.. Killing animals for fun is disgusting and of course wrong..

btw i eat meat.. but don´t think is comparable with having a whale like a slave on a tank.. Besides they treat the whale well (which i think they do) prolly the animal wants to be free on his habitat, not making funny acts for people.. Only the arrogance of human been can think otherwise
