Re: Shanghai
I had the chance to visit this area in Shanghai called Tianzifang. It's meant to be a creative area, lots of arts and craft, photographic galleries, and tourists. The locals would find it touristy but I didn't think so having seen more 'touristy' places elsewhere. The whole place is like a maze, what's fascinating is there're residential apartments and locals living there so if you take a wrong turn, you find yourself in the back street which leads to the apartments, and you get a glimpse of the pretty bad apartments they live in.

Yup, more underwear.

You can see the contrast in this picture, cafe alfresco setting. I think this is why locals describe it as touristy, this is the FIRST quaint alfresco setting I've seen in Shanghai.

This is an Aussie cafe/restaurant called Kommune. Says on the menu there's an Aussie bbq on weekends.

This is one of the back alley/streets I mentioned that leads to people's homes. An alley like this is literally right behind the cafes and quaint setting.

Another corridor to people's homes. At the end of this passageway there's a gate that's used to access the street.

Now this, is interesting. I came across this in another alley and thought it was a tiny Japanese bar/eatery. Turns out it's the back of the restaurent Meshi which they use to serve take out. I went back the same night and entered the restaurant via the front (they had Jude Law plastered on a wall, apparently he went there and had two dishes of raw beef or something). Anyway the inside is very small and very Japanese, filled with odd vintage stuff and the food is beautiful, definitely recommended if any of you visit Shanghai.

This is the Teddy Cafe or something. They have a shop selling teddy bears and balcony/rooftop for drinks which you can see here.

There you go, teddy bears.

Stairs leading to the bar area. They didn't have any seats on the rooftop, so we left.

And sat at a tiny shop next door for a beer.

Tsingtao is a locally brewed beer, very light. This cost about AUD2.

The table next to us looked like they've been there the whole arvo.

One of the shops selling art n craft stuff.

We finally made it up to Teddy Cafe. As you can see, the locals don't even bat an eyelid at the underwear.

Another table next to us. They proceeded to take pictures of themselves later. Very strange, people love taking pictures of themselves.

View from the table.

We overlooked what might be a Thai restaurant, surprisingly clean and we could smell grilled prawns.

More view from the table. I think my colleague was playing around with my camera.

Our mojito with too much soda.

This was on the wall next to the stairs, I'm assuming the notes were left behind by customers. Most of them are in mandarin of course, but this particular note and its message in english caught my eye.

This is the subway station outside Tianzifang, it's the newest station I've seen in Shanghai.

I guess subways look about the same everywhere but the warnings are always different.

This was at the exit of the People's Park station. People sleep EVERYWHERE. This is nothing. If I can brave the crowd at Ikea, I'll take pictures of people SLEEPING on Ikea beds and resting in their chairs in the showrooms. It's ridiculous.

The scene outside People's Square. This is one of the busiest station and area in Shanghai.

That billboard on the right, that's Nike's flagship store in Shanghai. I was headed there to pick up a backpack.
