nowt wrong with that list really

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Interesting list ... seems that RA don't rate any of the Renaissance series, any of the Bedrock series (Jimmy Van M or 40oz), any of Zabiela's releases or Communicate.

Yet they do highly rate Lavelle's GU023.

Need to check and re-check some of the stuff on there ... playing Ricardo Villalobos's fabric71 at the moment, still sounds too minimal - the first 10 mins are a snoozerfest - IMHO Luciano's is far more livelier but didn't make it.

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Interesting list. Disagree with a lot of it but amazed and delighted to see Dave Clarke's World Service mix in the top 10. Amazing piece of work.

Nice to see Lee Burridge's 24:7 and Danny Howells Nocturnal Frequencies 2 in there alongside more obvious stuff like Digweed's GU019 - all big favourites of mine.

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Love GU019 ... but Transitions vol 4 should have been in there too ;)

personally i think nocturnal frequencies 3 is better than 2. disc 1 of part 3 is one of the most sublime mixes i've ever heard. i still listen to it regularly...

Didn't rate this myself

As for Communicate, that's a different matter 8)

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

From what I saw, it seems like they were picking mix cds that were different and unique at the time they came out and were ahead of the curve.

Stuff like the Bedrock, Renaissance and other mixes mentioned were good no doubt but weren't anything innovative or different I'd say.

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

^^^lol

On topic, I find the list quite good maybe I don´t agree with it 100% but sill. For example Magda´s She´s a Dancing Machine is a cd I can´t really get in to. On the other side her Fabric cd is fantastic imo. Agoria´s Cute Cult cd is way better than his At the controls. The same goes for Dixon´s Body Language.

All in all I believe it´s a good list and will definitely check out the cd´s that I don´t know.

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

^^^ exactly, whether you agree with these lists or not, they're a good resource to find stuff that may have slipped by you during the year :)

#1328690Post 24 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Definitely agree that T4 should have featured there...more so than (ahem) GU 019 :D.....T4 is intelligent, moody, dark and light blending into each other perfectly, almost like a perfect map of the human mind

#1328750Post 25 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Finished playing Dixon's release - it hardly pulls up any trees, in fact I found it average and the "Eraser" moment was hardly epic :what

You could randomly pick any 2 x Ben Watt radio shows and find more inspiring deep house.

God, Balance 005.. Can we leave it in the last decade now that it made the list?

What Zabiela's Utilities & Alive CDs weren't anything innovative or different, buy Lavelle's GU, Involver and Holdens Balance where.:what

#1329323Post 31 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Involver really did set a new standard as far as what to expect from mix comps in my opinion. I really think what Joris Voorn did with his Balance comp is what Involver should have been, but that's a debate for a different thread.

The thing with Lavelle's GU is that he didn't let him self get pigeon holed into playing one style unlike everyone else had the time who was making a "techno" cd or a "Progressive house CD", he went across the board and showed it was okay to have a lot of different genres on one mix comp.

On that note I personally didn't like the CD when it came out, but listening to it now I see why it's rated as high as it is.

And with Holdens Balance comp, where as everyone else was doing the deeper, darker side of prog house he went the exact opposite and gave you a comp you could listen to at home and still had tracks that were rocking the clubs at the time. The tracks were a lot "lighter" in nature and had a lot of musical qualities instead of just being the dark and moody (read: BORING) tunes that prog was turning into.

When looking at this list you really have to put everything into perspective as far as what was going on at the time they were released and what they did different.

The Gui Boratto remix was ace

#1329792Post 36 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

Actually the only CDs i´m really surprised that are not there are:

Zabiela´s Alive - Showed a way of mixing prog like I never heard before

Lazarus Suck My Deck - A cd with sounds way ahead of its time.

Any other mix I can somehow understand only missed those two

#1329820Post 37 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

I was downloading and listening to a lot of Zabiela's mixes at the time but never listened to that comp. Might have to hunt it down.

Same with the Lazarus mix, just never was into him. Will give it a once over as well.

#1329823Post 38 of 41

Re: Resident Advisor - Top 50 mixes of the '00s

^^Definitely check Zabiela´s Alive, voted it as my favorite mix of the year back when it came out 2003 or 2004 don´t remeber right now.
