that logo is horrible btw. i think that is almost universally agreed upon too.
clint, what did you spell incorrectly?
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
I misspelled you're (your're) on some t-shirts for a trade show here in New Orleans. I'd love to say it's not completely my fault, but I don't think the owner of our company will see it that way. I printed the graphic, showed it to everyone in our office (including the owner) for proofing, and it went unnoticed. $1000 tshirt order we can't use, and the trade show is today. Fuck, we've had the tshirts in our possession for weeks.
I came in and replaced an entire marketing agency they had been using for years. I handle the organization, design, and traffic for multiple projects for each of 11 institutes throughout the southeast US. I just got bogged down with work and missed this crucial mistake. I'm so upset with myself right now...
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
and yes that logo is God awful, and to think some agency got paid tens of thousands of dollars for that
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
It is never the job of the designer to proofread any materials before sent for production, so don't feel bad, even in small companies there should be someone else in charge of proofreading, you know after hours of looking at the same stuff is hard to notice stuff like this.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
If I were you're boss I'd be screwing right now, probably a little bit because you spelt it wrong, but more so that I read it and proofed it.
I write a bit of music now and then, after looping a bar for so long you do lose track of where its going. This sort of echoes what the labmonkey has said above.
He can't fire you for that.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
you're (your're)
Say it is satire on the abuse of the apostrophe.
Hope it works out for you :what

yeah i thought that - just roll your eyes and tell em they don't get it..
seriously, don't beat yourself up. Sounds like you're doing a better job than they are.
Hope you don't get the boot over it, that would be shite management.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
that logo for the olympics is awful, lisa simpson giving head is a bit of a reach though
as far as the spelling error, I'd feel like shit too, but as others have said, when more than one set of eyes are on it, someone should have picked up on it... the timing really blows though, sorry mate
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
Oh no! :( I really hope everything works out for you Clint. Like others have said multiple people proofed it for you, so hopefully they don't take their anger out solely on you. You are human, you make mistakes....hopefully they yell a bit, suck it up, and move on hug
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
God I feel for you !! :(
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
u doin alright injun?
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
Talked to the owner today, but she didn't say anything about it. I'm sure it's coming.... waiting on the marketing manager to get to work. I share an office with her. We'll see.... I'm certainly not going to bring it up ;)
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
It's not your fault alone to bear. Seems other's eyes weren't working that day either. Good luck, I'm sure it will all be just fine.

This is not an attack to the OP but just a general comment. Regardless of who's fault it was, someone (or a group) is responsible and there comes accountability and consequences. Saying "it's not my job" esp coming from the person that created the material is trying to shun accountability and blaming someone else. In an IT world, that would be like a programmer not doing any sort of debugging and blaming a bug on QA entirely when a bug surfaces later. The right thing to do is to own up to it. Sorry, really, I just get so sick of all the finger pointing that's done in my company b/c everyone's all about CYA and no one takes responsibility for their actions.
OP, don't take it personally and I feel bad for you man. I hope things will get sorted out for you without too much pain.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
I'm not the type of person to point fingers and I have completely owned up to the error. I created it. I've expressed this my employer today.
By the way, I still have a job. They weren't quite as upset about it as I expected. It's an expensive mistake I've learned from, and will take extra steps with the screenprinter from here on out to make sure something like this will never happen again. I can breathe now.....

What blows me is that the printing shop didn't catch it after the first $10 Tee was printed but the heroes went ahead and dumped $1K worth of Tees out.

I disagree with this. If there are 10 chefs in the kitchen, all are to blame. Just cause someone created it and therein lies the mistake doesn't forgive the fact that passed through 6 sets of eyes. If that was the case, the OP should've been the one passing the design STRAIGHT to the printers, which WASN'T the case.
Believe me bro, you wouldn't be posting as calmly as you do if really experienced being unfairly shafted for something that you were effin told to do, to begin with.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
They weren't so mad I guess cause they nearly sold out of the other shirts I created for Valentines at the show.
Uppers and downers, uppers and downers......

I called the lady who sent the design to the screenprinter and she was embarrassed neither she nor the screenprinter noticed. It was so plane as day once I saw it.
On a good note, we may be able to salvage the shirts by printing over the flawed design. We'll see.

Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
I want one of those t-shirts! Vintage Clint.
Re: The fatal error of a graphic designer
i've had errors in my work too. I make magazines on a daily base, some in two languages and once i placed a french ad in the dutch version. It was proofread by the person in charge (account manager), sent to the printer and printed. The person in charge did visit the printer to give an OK on the first printed examples (looking if the colors we're like the colorproofs). After 3 hours (+/- 55000 sheets of paper printed) he noticed the french ad. Meaning 55000 sheets for the bin, make new plates, reprint = 1000$ for the new plates + 1000$ wait times penalty for the press that was stopped and new paper. Creditnota was around 5000$. Boss was really angry, yelled at me and the account manager for about 15 mins and didn't speak to us for a week. I was nervous but mistakes happen. Nothing else happened.
Since then i never ever sent anything to the printer without a signature + OK stamp of the client/person in charge. Hah !

You're a designer man, nobody expects you to spell check. Visual people see copy as lines and blocks.
