A Twitter post landed Paul Chambers in hot water with the police

When heavy snowfall threatened to scupper Paul Chambers's travel plans, he decided to vent his frustrations on Twitter by tapping out a comment to amuse his friends. "Robin Hood airport is closed," he wrote. "You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!" Unfortunately for Mr Chambers, the police didn't see the funny side. A week after posting the message on the social networking site, he was arrested under the Terrorism Act and questioned for almost seven hours by detectives who interpreted his post as a security threat. After he was released on bail, he was suspended from work pending an internal investigation, and has, he says, been banned from the Doncaster airport for life. "I would never have thought, in a thousand years, that any of this would have happened because of a Twitter post," said Mr Chambers, 26. "I'm the most mild-mannered guy you could imagine." While it has happened in the United States, Mr Chambers is thought to be the first person in the United Kingdom to be arrested for comments posted on Twitter. His ordeal began on 6 January when, after hearing that extreme weather had forced the closure of Robin Hood airport, he posted the ill-advised message – frustrated because he was to fly to Ireland from that airport on Friday 15 January. On 13 January, after apparently receiving a tip-off from a member of the public, police arrived at Mr Chambers' office. "My first thought upon hearing it was the police was that perhaps a member of my family had been in an accident," he said. "Then they said I was being arrested under the Terrorism Act and produced a piece of paper. It was a print-out of my Twitter page. That was when it dawned on me." Mr Chambers said the police seemed unable to comprehend the intended humour in his online comment. "I had to explain Twitter to them in its entirety because they'd never heard of it," he said. "Then they asked all about my home life, and how work was going, and other personal things. The lead investigator kept asking, 'Do you understand why this is happening?' and saying, 'It is the world we live in'." After the interview, Mr Hale was returned to a cell for an hour then released. But, he said, not before the police deleted the post from his Twitter page. He has been bailed until 11 February, when he will be told whether or not he will be charged with conspiring to create a bomb hoax. In the interim, detectives have confiscated his iPhone, laptop and home computer. The civil libertarian Tessa Mayes, an expert on privacy law and free speech issues, said: "Making jokes about terrorism is considered a thought crime, mistakenly seen as a real act of harm or intention to commit harm. "The police's actions seem laughable and suggest desperation in their efforts to combat terrorism, yet they have serious repercussions for all of us. In a democracy, our right to say what we please to each other should be non-negotiable, even on Twitter." A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police confirmed the arrest and said: "A male was arrested on 13 January for comments made on a social networking site. He has been bailed pending further investigations." Nobody from Robin Hood airport could be contacted last night.

Re: Twitter joke led to Terror Act arrest and airport life ban

they've taken terrorism threats very seriously now even if it was intended to be just a joke, after all these people post videos on youtube, fb and elsewhere that they gonna kill people and stuff and then they do it for real !! i remember almost 10 years ago my cousin was asked at the airport if she was carrying anything that shouldnt be on the plane and she joked saying she was carrying a bomb. result was she was arrested there and then, taken in a small room and they searched everything from bags to her body to make sure she didnt have a fucking bomb. apparently she is a toxicologist and works in cancer research in the states, so she likes more to try and save people rather than blowing a plane!! they didnt know that tho... i think jokes like that are very stupid in the times we live!!!

Agreed. If everyone were just "making jokes", then the police would have to waste hours debunking the jokes from the threats. If you weed out the shit heads by punishing the stupid ones, the police will not have to waste their time with these people. He wasted tax dollars.... And god forbid some terrorist plot was occuring at the same time and he police were dealing with this dick instead of a real threat, he could cost many people their life. Not funny at all IMO.

Agreed 100%!

As others have mentioned already, in the times we live in, stupid jokes like this aren't cool and obviously taken seriously and honestly, I am glad they are...I am grateful that there are people out there looking out for us. If someone posted this and they didn't look into it and the airport was bombed, people would be freaking out saying, "why didn't they do anything?! he said he was going to on Twitter."

QFT. Anyone remember that asshole that posted on his Facebook, Myspace or whatever the fuck it was that he was going to shoot up the Spin class full of women and no one did shit about it? That is a prime example why it should be looked into. On one hand you think "Wow that is pretty harsh" on the other though, would you rather have an entire airport be bombed? No one took gym guy seriously and he ended up killing a couple females and himself (not that he was a loss) and injuring quite a few more. Imagine if the police had actually done something about it.

Lesson learned here, there are times to make bomb threats and there are times to not make them. Threaten to blow up your neighbors house cause the fucking yappy dog doesn't shut up, DO NOT threaten to blow up an airport.

Re: Twitter joke led to Terror Act arrest and airport life ban

^^ Err I don't think your neighbours would be too happy with that either

Good idea they investigated, and agree he was stupid, but being stupid and having a really pathetic sense of humour shouldn't be punished to this extent.

Nah, I'm a bleeding heart lefty, I don't like that philosphy  The punishment should fit the crime. And bad jokes aren't that criminal. Fining him would be nice idea.

I'll honestly say I'm a lot more right than left. I used to think this way (not trying to argue just stating my opinion) but I've lost all hope for humanity to pull itself out of the downward spiral cluster fuck we are in without making examples out of people, even then it's questionable. So I agree with Mr. Graham, make examples of people so everyone knows there is a time and place for stupidity.

Re: Twitter joke led to Terror Act arrest and airport life ban

^^^ There is a time and place for stupidity  Opinion duly noted.

I get depressed about the way things are going. But one of the biggest problems is that setting examples doesn't actually work. People who makes stupid remarks don't think about it first, all it really does is make we who aren't stupid enough to make these remarks feel that something is being done about it.It isn't :(
