Just released:
NIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Conan O'Brien released the following statement. People of Earth: In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision. Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both. But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule. Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy. So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more. There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work. Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way. SOURCE Conan O’Brien
remains to be seen how this will really play out is my guess.

I'm glad he called them on it though.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

To be honest I think Jay should leave instead. Conan is fine where he is at (imo). For the record I am not a big fan of Conan but I do watch him and I much prefer Jimmy Fallon. I used to watch Jay when he was on the tonight show but since he moved I just don't have the time to watch him in that slot. Sometimes I don't get to sit down until the 11 o'clock news comes on so for me Jay should just move on.

I prefer Conan over Leno. Sad to hear the execs don't want to live up to the signatures on their contracts.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

Those are all NBC addresses. Comcast recently bought a 51% stake in NBC, and Jeff Zucker reports directly to the President/CEO of Comcast. If you really want to get under some skin, everyone should start harassing Brian Roberts at Comcast instead.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

I don't think Conan is as funny as he used to be long time ago but I would still watch him over Leno. I've never seen Leno's 10pm show and frankly don't care to have 30 min of him at 11:35. I actually like the current Conan-Fallon lineup.

#1321737Post 14 of 41

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

Comcast hasn't closed the deal fully yet pending FCC approvals and all that jazz...

Zucker screwed things up when he "promised" Conan 5 YEARS AGO the TS gig because he might have jumped then...of course Leno when he left had top ratings.

NBC = Nobody Cares. And for good reason.

#1322015Post 15 of 41

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

I personally think Conan lost his mojo when he switched to the tonight show. And when he decided to have Adam Lambert on the show I immediately made a choice to never watch anyone who would have that freak on their show again.

And even though I was put off about Jimmy Fallon on late night. I've found that his show is way better than Conan's show ever was on Late Night.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

dont know much, but if they are dicking conan out of his dream show after less than a year that is totally shitty if you ask me. i hope fox or abc offers him some deal, and he might not top jays sterile/family fun/mainstream to the max humor ratings, he will still be doing his own shit and still have a large audience who loves what hes doing and be able to keep doing what he loves.

sounds like this is true:

NBC = Never Believe your Contract

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

NBC fucked him royally, there's no doubt about that. The recent shows have been hilarious though, he's been really speaking his mind. Ricky Gervais also joined him, haven't laughed that much watching the show in a long time.

keeping him waiting for 5 years, having his staff and all their families move from coast to coast and then only giving them 7 months - its terrible. they didnt even try to change the show that was failing (Lenos earlier time slot) .royally fucked over.

I'd imagine Leno will get terrible ratings when he returns.

The Kimmel-interview is hilarious, he really rips Leno apart.

I have to say that I liked Friends a whole lot.

#1322640Post 30 of 41

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

I absolutely love the show Friends. I also loved Frasier. After those shows went off. NBC really knew that they were in trouble.

I think a lot of the problem is with their management. As I really dug the Michael Richards show. And think had they given it enough of a run for an entire season, it would have ended up a hit.

Conan is way funnier than Leno and Fallon combined, he should stay exactly where he is.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

i don't think i've ever watched Jimmy Kimmel. He knows he can rip into any of the other late night guys because no one is going to care what he says.

And Conan isn't the funny one. He comes from a writing background, not a true standup background. And his writers are the ones who make him funny. So don't try to make it out to be more than it really is.

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

I'd think that him writing for the simpsons and SNL for a bunch of years he prob wrote some of those jokes he says on stage himself eh? :)

Re: Conan quitting The Tonight Show

Jeff, are you retarded?

Remember the writer's strike that happened two years ago? Leno (along with nearly every other late night talk show) went off air for 2 months because he had no writers.
