is it smart to be a bedroom dj and not venture out for gigs?

If you just want to DJ for the fun of it, then you're doing it for the right reasons. As long as you have the disposable income to keep up with your hobby, then go for it.
If everyone who had turntables were getting gigs, these msg boards would be devoid of chatter!

+1 on that.
Since you want to go just for fun, my opinion is to buy some used equipment so that you don't spend a fortune, plus you can easily get rid of it in the minimum loss if things do not go as expected :D :D
Once you learn to match tracks using turntables, then surely you will be able to match on everything else (i.e. using CDJs, Traktor, controllers).
Go for it, I believe you won't regret it. The only obstacle may be finding some valuable free time to spend on experimenting (or practising) and you're set. :)
