Why is San Diego considered one of the top beer cities in the world? We speak to Greg Koch, from Stone Brewing Company, and Pizza Port's Jeff Bagby about what makes their beers unique, and how San Diego has become the premiere craft brewing spot in the United States.

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

Yeah but the bars still close before two, have to post where some of these brews might be for purchase, but the SF Nor Cal nano brews, think that is the new term now, are rockin, had them at the Tornado on Haight, but will check these out as well. I thought all San Diego was good for was college credit surf classes and low wage service sector jobs, my how things have changed since I have left there. One dollar beers on Sunday.

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

^Abita makes pretty good beer. They don't knock it out of the park like Stone does, but I like Turbodog, Restoration ale, and purple haze on occasion (that's actually all i've had from them.) That Pecan beer looks delicious tho.

#1298157Post 12 of 32

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

Never had a Stone, it seems I should look into it. Jenks, that Abita Select is awesome too, had it for the first time this weekend at the brewery. Apparently varies in alcohol content and taste depending on the batch.

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

stone is the apex folks, and most definitely a cream of the crop brew. listen to jenks and check out stone's profile on beer advocate. adzey, you would have no idea son. :)

i actually made a drunk thread about one of stone's crafts -- a week or so ago -- whilst enjoying a few from their vertical epic series --> http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78117

everyone who's tried stone knows the sheer quality of their shit. stone is at the top of my list, and i drink it weekly. if you're ever in southern california, just hit me up, drinks are on me. strongly advise checking out the official site as well.

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

They sell this one in my local which is good stuff but pricey (about 4 quid a pint )

More of a mass produced beer than a craft beer but i like it for being a bit different.

They sel this one sometimes as well - the draught version of the more widely available duvel white (again not cheap @ £5.50 a pint:what) but for a beer this strong, it's very very smooth. Like it - just can't afford much of it.

There's also one called PUNK IPA from a brewery in Aberdeen, Scotland called Brewdog which has gone from being a very small operation and truly a "craft" beer to being stocked nationally in the big supermarkets. Good stuff, they make another called "Trashy Blonde" which sounds appealing eh?.

Biggest seller of all though is Harvest Pale from the Castle Rock brewery , brewed locally and very very popular, though i can't say i'm into it. Be careful, it does this to your face

As we've said already though, England is the undisputed king when it comes to beer and the rest of the world can only look on in envy. I'll be doing my bit for national pride later on today as i see in the weekend with a gallon of my favourite tipple.

er.

Re: San Diego Is Home To America’s Finest Craft Beers

Mmmm...Pizza Port...enough to make a man want to move back out west! ~m~8)m

Amigo Lager

Amigo lager is a thirst quenching Mexican lager traditionally served with a lime. A tribute to the beers of Mexico. Salud!
              Carlsbad Cream Ale

One of our lightest beers brewed at Pizza Port. Crisp and refreshing, Cream Ales are the perfect sipping beer for all beer drinkers when the weather is hot or cold. Goes great with all of our pizzas.
           California Honey Ale

Light in color and body, this beer is brewed at all of our Pizza Port locations. A little heavier in alcohol than the Carlsbad Cream Ale, we use only the best California Honey to produce a subtle aroma and flavor in the finished product.
            Port Pale Ale

The best selling beer at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Great on Cask as well. The beer is brewed in the West Coast Pale Ale Style. It has 5 malts and 4 hops including dry hops in the serving tank. Served unfiltered.
         Sharkbite Red

Our Signature beer. Brewed to the same recipe in each of our locations. A very robust Red ale made with Centennial and Cascade hops which lend a spicy finish to the beer. We have brewed more Sharkbite Red ale than any other beer on our menu.
            Carlsbad Chronic

Our customers can't get enough of this amber ale that was orginally brewed with hemp seeds, but tastes just as good without them.
         Wipeout IPA

Our version of this West Coast IPA brings a smile to the face of hopheads everywhere. BIG AND HOPPY, this beer has a huge bitter finish which is mildly tempered by the large amounts of crystal malt we use. One sip and you'll know why it's called Wipeout.
         Hop Suey Double IPA

Over 9% hop insanity! A new Bagby offering that is too good to be true.
        Revelations Belgian Gold

Its light color and body sneaks up on you being 8.5% alcohol by volume!
         Hops on Rye Barleywine

The rye shines through on every taste with extreme hoppiness for a barleywine.
        Port's Porter

One of the many dark beers we serve on our Nitrogen handle which causes the beer to cascade in the glass. It's thick, rich, dark and smooth. Brewed with 3 different Chocolate malts, including imported Kiln Coffee malt, this ale is almost as much fun to watch as it is to drink.
      Junk 'n da Trunkle Dunkle

              A dunkleweiss.
         Night Rider Imperial Stout

Adding to the list of over 9% beers on tap this one comes in at 9.5% with smooth dark and rich flavor.

Back to Top SEASONAL OFFERINGS

Winter Warmer Switch Stance Strong Ale Special Pale Ale Beachcomber Blonde Ale Winter Wipeout Blonde Bombshell Barleywine More Seasonals to come!!! Oatmeal Porter Traditional English Ale Pizza Port Solana Beach (Standard Ales on Tap Year Round)

Cardiff Cream Ale

A nice light refreshing lawnmower beer named after a great place to wax up and take out the longboard!
     California Honey Ale

Light in color and body, this beer is brewed at both Pizza Port locations. A little heavier in alcohol than the Carlsbad Cream Ale, we use only the best California Honey to produce a subtle aroma and flavor in the finished product.
        Grandview Golden Ale

An easy to drink Golden Ale that uses many imported ingredients and hops resulting in a ale with Pilsner like flavors. We love this beer for its balance between hops and malts. One of the best beers to drink with our Pizza Vallarta. Sharkbite Red

Our Signature beer. Brewed to the same recipe in each of our locations. A very robust Red ale made with Centennial and Cascade hops which lend a spicy finish to the beer. We have brewed more Sharkbite Red ale than any other beer on our menu.
                   Ponto Pale Ale

A tasty hoppy Pale Ale brewed in San Diego. The judges seem to think it's a nice IPA. Whatever you want to call it, we like it too! One of the best selling beers in Solana Beach. Enjoy a pint and savor the citrus flavors of the bittering hops and the maltiness of our ale strain. Swamis IPA

Similar the Wipeout IPA brewed in Carlsbad. This is the original San Diego IPA. We have been brewing this beer since we installed the brewery in 1992. Big and Bitter like theWipeout. A true beer lovers beer.
               Ale Nino

Call it whatever you want, we prefer to think of it as a "Double Brown Ale." This hugely malty beer is made from 7 different malts and four hops. It is exceptionally smooth, blending malts, alcohol and hops to create a truly unique drinking experience.
       Port's Porter

One of the many dark beers we serve on our Nitrogen handle which causes the beer to cascade in the glass. It's thick, rich dark and smooth. Brewed in Solana Beach with an imported Pale Chocolate malt, this ale is almost as much fun to watch as it is to drink.
       Belgian Style Ales

We never know which Belgian Ale Tomme will be brewing next. We usually have at least one(sometimes two) Belgian Style Ales on tap. These beers feature only the best imported ingredients including the expensive Candi Sugar necessary to make authentic Belgian Style Ales. Look for Overhead Pale Ale, Dubbel Overhead Abbey Ale, Trippel Overhead Golden Ale, St Auggies Grand Cru, SPF 8 Spring Saison, SPF 45 Saison, Breakwater Wit, and The Mother of All Beers(Quadruppel 10.5% ABV).
