Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Ok so here is the story...

On the 25th of this month Hybrid & Henry Saiz are playing at Chinese laundry here in Sydney.

I know Henry's productions and really enjoy them but i have yet to hear a live set so his dj skills i know nothing of... What can i expect?

Hybrid is hit and miss for me.. not as consistent as they used to be and i haven't heard a set of theirs for at least a yr.

Also to add a lil insult to injury they are playing at a venue that sounds like shit. The low end is muddy... the top end is to sharp and hurts my ears... Even with my ear plugs.

But i haven't been out in a while and I'm really up for a good night..

See my dilemma?

Any help?? Are they both worth me putting up with the crappy sound? I'm a lil lost

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

^^^ Sorry to hear about the sound because that place seems to be getting some good Djs. :(

I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid ! What you said pretty well applies to me . Seen Hybrid twice, our locals were better. Henry Saiz is too new to know much about as a DJ. Brilliant producer though. He had better play We are all !!! I am going because the sound will be good and it's a Sunny event. Probably the only event I go to for the social aspect as well as the music. Actually that is maybe because Sunny crowds are really all about the music

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

I'm in Sydney so I have the same dilemma. Hybrid in Melb last year was a disappointment. And Laundry suck ass.

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Why Laundry... WHYYYYYYY?? lol

We've got heaps of better venue with The Civic no.1 on my list... Why do we have to go to Laundry.. The last 2 times i went there i vowed never to go back but I may have to... ouch!

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Not a big fan of the Civic either. Nice venue, but sound ain't great there. Isolee is coming up at the Civic, that's tempting.

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

I would have to disagree... I do really love the sound in the civic basement..

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

I say check out Hybrid .. it's a night out with some pretty decent music - better than being at a cheesy bar bashing out top 40 tunes.

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

 Maybe there are other options. ?? Last time I saw Hybrid they weren't decent :(

Basement's sound's better than Laundry, but I still find it slightly boomy unless you are right up front or on the stage. You should check out the speakers at Sunny :p

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

i saw hybrid live in LA with hypoluxxa, newland, missjenny, and some, and they were brilliant. (as were newland and kev kazell upstairs.)

i cannot claim to know much about saiz, as only his bedrock remix is what i know of him. (nvr bought much more)

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Just noticed my second favourite Dj from this year, Dubfunk, is also playing at Laundry:( I thought we were unlucky because he was playing at a Likes of You big Techno event. [means oversold, hot and pretty random crowd], but at least Brown Alley sound should be good !! Although Likes of You have form for bad sound .

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

It will be interesting to hear a club set from saiz, he's one of my favourite producers. I wish I lived in melbourne, you guys have such a better music scene :( Laundry is always too packed, barely enough room to move sometimes. I was really interested to check out nick warren when he played the easter renaissance party with satoshi tomiie, but I couldn't last longer than 15 minutes before having to go outside and get some air, it was ridiculous!

#1246191Post 22 of 31

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Is he on the saturday night.?? Because we have him on the Friday, I could give you a review then :)

That event here with Nick and Satoshi was absolutely spectacular. :D As an event it was the best of the year so far. Darkbeat guys throw great parties :D Although on a personal level Hernan's two shows were my favourites. :)

Btw Sorry for rubbing it in :(

#1246195Post 23 of 31

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Yeah, he'll be playing on sat the 25th. Do you guys have hybrid as well? If you do, I'd be interested to know what kind of stuff they're playing at the moment. Unfortunately sweetchilli have stopped putting on big prog djs, so laundry has hardly any competition. I may just have to move down to melbourne :D

Are 'darkbeat' & 'sunny' two different companies? Where do 'likes of you' fit into it? I wish I had seen hernan this year, but I couldn't talk any mates into spending the ~$80 :(

Despite the overcrowding I did have a great time at the renaissance party. Satoshi played an earlier set (8-1030 maybe?) in the courtyard which made the night for me. Still pretty disappointed about missing warren though. Although I wish renaissance would move these big nights away from the easter long weekend. It makes easter sunday breakfast with the extended family a bit... interesting. This year I got an hour or two of sleep beforehand, so it wasn't nearly as bad as 2008 after fanciulli/seaman which was nice

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Darkbeat and Sunny are different but they often work together! Both fantastic.

Sunny is pretty legendary for brilliant prog nights and fantastic crowds. They were really underground for years . Didn't even do forums. Strictly word of mouth !!

Darkbeat are a pretty versatile night. They do a lot of what I call prog ,, but spread themselves out over a lot of genres. They are always quality though! My best ever night was a Darkbeat / Sunny night. They choose their Dls really well , the way they program their nights is nothing short of brilliant. :D I'm a big fan:D

Likes of You is part of Future. This my opinion ! Basically I think they are crap. They run nights of, once again in my opinion, pretty aggressive second rate international Techno Djs. Our local techno guys are usually the highlight of these nights. Then they throw is a token prog Dj to pull in a bigger crowd. The crowds are very random , pushy etc. They seem to be concerned mainly with pulling punters in and that is it. They have no respect for the Djs. On two occasions I know of they have actually blamed the Djs for sound problems. They do get some good Djs merely because they have the money to buy them and recoup use the marketing strategy I outlined above.

It's the huge gap between doing it for the money and doing it for music. The Sydney show for Hernan and Loco Dice was a prime example. Apparently the sound was awful, Hernan got through it , but it got worse for Loco Dice and he walked off early. As well as all the other problems they had there.

The things that Sunny and Darkbeat do like make sure the aircon , fans and most importantly, sound etc are all functioning properly certainly aren't done by LOY !

Probably more info than you needed

Yes we have Hybrid and Saiz on the same night. It's a Sunny night . Will be good. :D

May I just say we have some stunningly good locals :D

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

Haha, no, all that info was great, thanks! All I knew about them previously was from a few sets I have. The darkbeat & sunny party with danny howells earlier in the year sounded amazing. I'm so glad that part of that set was released. You guys really are spoiled down there :p I think laundry is owned by justin hemmes/merivale, so I imagine they are closest to likes of you - maximising profit at the expense of the patrons. I'll have to make it down to melbourne for a sunny party sometime in the future.

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!
Probably more info than you needed
I disagree too! Thanks for the detail Di!

Re: Sydney and the Laundry, I had strips ripped off me for posting my thoughts on the Laundry's approach to big name acts & DJ's on certain Aussie forum.

Its heartening to see that people who's opionion I respect (MS users) felt the same way about the gig...

It is SUCH a pitty that Sweetchilli don't put on prog nights anymore, and its almost a crime that the Laundry gets away with r4ping the local scene the way it does...

I think its time I packed my bags and headed down to Melbourne to check out one of the Darkbeat/Sunny gigs in person...

So to answer your original question, go, purely to indulge what drives all of us, the chance to hear what the like of Saiz & Hybrid have to offer, but as always, brace yourself for the overcrowding, poor sound dynamics, and general CBF'd attitude that is the Laundry....

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

^^Err I was talking about Likes of You, not Laundry, but it's probably the same with the more commercial promoters.

I used to actually support the big promoters simply because they bring out the big acts until I realised how it actually worked.

pm me a link to your tearing off of strips.

Btw What did happen to sweetchilli ??

Re: Hybrid & Henry Saiz..... I need some convincing!

TBH the Sunny crowd has really deteriorated over the years, a lot more clubbers these days. And skanks :what:|:p

I got that, the comments re: the Laundry are purely my take on their approach to clubbing in Sydney.

I was disagreeing with you saying your original post was 'more info than we needed' - more detail the better!

LOL - I'll PM you the link on ITM
